The horror genre has seen a lot of success over the last few years, and 2023 has had much to celebrate. In particular, movies like Scream VI, Thanksgiving, and Insidious: The Red Door have all proven to be success stories at the box office. However, none of these movies were nearly as successful as Five Nights at Freddy's. The movie recently crossed $300 million at the global box office, making it the year's highest-grossing horror film. At this time, Blumhouse has not officially announced a sequel, but rumors have suggested that director Emma Tammi will return for Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

The success of Five Nights at Freddy's is all the more impressive considering the movie received a simultaneous release on Peacock. That could have easily cut down on the movie's theatrical performance, but clearly fans of the games were still willing to go see it on the big screen.

2023: The Year of Video Game Movies

Five Nights at Freddy's marked Blumhouse's first movie based on a video game. While 2023 has been a big year for horror, it's also been a huge one for video game adaptations; The Super Mario Bros. Movie released back in April, earning more than $1 billion at the global box office, while The Last of Us proved to be a huge hit for HBO when it debuted in January. Projects like these are proving to studios that there's a lot of interest in faithful video game adaptations, and that can translate to big success. In fact, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum told Discussing Film earlier this year that the studio is interested in adapting other games into horror movies.

It's worth noting that Blum's comments came months prior to the release of Five Nights at Freddy's. Now that the movie is out and a big success story for Blumhouse, it's all the more likely that we'll see more releases inspired by major games. We don't know what will come next for the company, but Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is the safest bet.

2024 Video Game Adaptations

Blumhouse won't be the only studio chasing the success of video game adaptations at the box office. A number of other major video game adaptations are currently in the works and slated to release in 2024. Next year, Warner Bros. will be releasing Mortal Kombat 2 in theaters, while Paramount will have Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Streaming services will also have some big name adaptations, including Halo Season 2 on Paramount+ and Fallout on Amazon. It remains to be seen whether any of these will prove as successful as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Five Nights at Freddy's, or The Last of Us, but it's clear that studios are trying to find the next big video game movie or TV show.

New Nosferatu Reboot Image Released https://comicbook.com/horror/news/nosferatu-reboot-remake-photo-image-tease-nicholas-hoult/ Mon, 04 Dec 2023 16:28:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 69310a54-2a57-4edb-8c24-d62f376cb689

Fans were given the exciting news last week that Robert Eggers' Nosferatu reboot would be arriving in theaters next Christmas, and while we wait for an official look at footage from the experience, an all-new image offers another glimpse at the experience. Understandably, audiences are particularly curious about how the iconic Graf Orlok, played by Bill Skarsg?rd, will look in the new movie, with this photo only offering a hint of how creepy the actor will look as the iconic character. You can check out a new photo from Nosferatu below before it lands in theaters on December 25, 2024.

"There are things that are [actor Max] Schreck-like but I felt we had to do something else," Eggers shared with Total Film. "Basically I was like, 'What would a dead Transylvanian nobleman actually look like for real?' Bill lost a tremendous amount of weight."

The filmmaker continued, "He's so transformed in every aspect that I don't know if people will give him the credit. You can see Bill [as Pennywise] in the IT makeup; you can't detect any Bill here. He worked with an opera coach to lower his voice an octave. I think people are going to think we treated it digitally, but that's his performance."

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake. The movie stars Bill Skarsg?rd, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.

The original 1922 Nosferatu from director F.W. Murnau served as an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, borrowing a handful of narrative and thematic elements of the novel, though notably portrayed the villain as quite monstrous in appearance. In the 1931 Dracula, the titular character was much more charming and seductive than the ghoulish figure from Nosferatu.

In the decades since those films debuted, these two vampire archetypes have largely set the standard of the ways in which the creatures are interpreted on screen. While both versions of the creature have earned countless on-screen appearances, Nosferatu earned a direct reboot in 1979 from director Werner Herzog in which Klaus Kinski played the main character.

Nosferatu hits theaters on December 25, 2024.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines: Henry Thomas Joined Film Because of Character's Deep Secret https://comicbook.com/horror/news/pet-sematary-2-henry-thomas-inspiration-revealed/ Sun, 03 Dec 2023 04:21:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 135d6d43-c14f-4983-977b-4b30d44afcbd

After grossing over five times its production budget, Pet Sematary got a sequel in the form of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, a prequel set 50 years before the initial film. Featuring an ensemble of new actors, Henry Thomas is one of the picture's leads. As the ET alumnus tells us, he boarded the project because of his character's deep, dark secret.

"For me, I liked the fact that he had this generational secret he was keeping under wraps," Thomas tells ComicBook.com. "He's all about very adamantly looking after his son's well being then there's the group of people meeting and he's like, 'What is this weird secret society?'"

When is Pet Sematary: Bloodlines streaming?

The film was produced as a Paramount+ exclusive, so it's been streaming since its release in October. Increasingly rare for a streaming film, however, is a physical release, something Bloodlines will get this coming week. Special features on the home video release are as follows:

  • Origins - Explore sinister origins and haunting secrets alongside David Duchovny and the cast of Pet Sematary.
  • Fresh Blood - Watch as new talent embraces the Pet Sematary legacy.
  • Death's Design - Unearth the chilling secrets and hidden Easter eggs that breathe life into Pet Sematary's terrifying designs.
  • Method to the Madness - Go behind the scenes with Jack Mulhern and Isabella LeBlanc, who share how they prepped for their roles, including bonding with four-legged co-stars.
  • War Comes Home - Enter the chilling realm of Pet Sematary as filmmakers and cast dissect the final scene, revealing the innovative technology behind its terrifying realization.

The movie stars Jackson White (Tell Me Lies), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Jack Mulhern (Mare of Easttown), Henry Thomas (The Fall of the House of Usher), Natalie Alyn Lind (The Goldbergs), and Isabella Star LaBlanc (True Detective: Night Country). David Duchovny and Pam Grier also appear in the prequel.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines will be landing on Digital HD on December 5th and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 19th. It will be available here on Amazon in the coming days.

Henry Thomas Hopes to Reunite With Mike Flanagan in The Dark Tower https://comicbook.com/horror/news/henry-thomas-reunite-mike-flanagan-the-dark-tower/ Sun, 03 Dec 2023 02:40:00 +0000 Spencer Perry e96028db-ecb4-4e0b-b7e0-0e642234c38c

Though best known to many film fans for his role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Henry Thomas has made a name for himself in recent years for working as a genre character actor. One of the key collaborations in his career has been working with writer/director Mike Flanagan including movies like Ouija: Origin of Evil, TV shows The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher, and Stephen King adaptations including Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. Even beyond working with Flanagan though Thomas has appeared in even MORE King adaptations including Stephen King's Desperation and the Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King TV series.

Speaking with ComicBook.com for his role in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (now streaming on Paramount+, another King adjacent work), we asked Henry Thomas if there were any other Stephen King adaptations that he would be interested in and one seemed to immediately come to mind. He revealed, "Well, supposedly Mike's gonna be doing The Dark Tower. So, I'd love to have a part in that but, who knows how that will turn out. But, but that's a potential one and other than that...You know, over the years I've kind of learn to just wait and see what happens. And I take the things that I can get at and, uh, you know, projects come to me sometimes and, otherwise you're just at the mercy of the fates."

The first attempt at adapting Stephen King's magnum opus wasn't a tremendous success, with the Idris Elba-starring movie being met with poor reviews and earning just $50 million at the domestic box office. Flanagan gaining the rights to the series is one that has many fans excited about its potential, especially since the director has already adapted two of the more difficult King texts into hit movies with Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep.

King's Dark Tower books are not only one of the most dense reads in his entire bibliography, but one that ties all of his books together in one way or another. The 2017 movie adaptation only hinted at this with barely visible Easter eggs. If Mike Flanagan has his way though, his new swing at bat for The Dark Tower could pull from all corners of the King Universe. In theory at least. Speaking on the Script Apart podcast previously, Flanagan opened up about his love for the characters in Doctor Sleep that he got to spend time with as a creative and how they could maybe be brought into The Dark Tower.

"The thing about the King universe is, it's all connected. And the nexus point of those connections is The Dark Tower," Flanagan teased. "So I have the rights to that at the moment, I hope I'm able to keep them long enough to get it made, but that's something else that always affords opportunities. In the Dark Tower universe, there are all these other characters from the King world that come into play in different ways. And that's one where when you make changes to the source material to introduce characters who could have played a very important role in that story the way it was structured...Doctor Sleep was written after The Dark Tower was finished. Abra Stone in the Dark Tower universe, as a Breaker [telepathic agent], is really interesting."

He continued, "There's a character in The Dark Tower named Dandelo, who I think is a cousin of the True Knot, who's this emotional vampire but who feeds on laughter instead of fear. But there's room in that world for the True Knot themselves, there's room for Rose The Hat. There might be room for Danny Torrance. There's all sorts stuff that could be amazing, if we're able to get that property on its feet. There's ways to pull in other things rom the King universe, and I think The Shining universe - the Doctor Sleep universe - could very seamlessly dovetail into it. Especially since, in our movie, Dick Hallorann all but points to The Dark Tower in his last scene with Dan."

When it was confirmed that Flanagan had managed to snag the rights to Stephen King's The Dark Tower it wasn't confirmed where the series might land. Flanagan previously had a deal set up at Netflix and has now moved his talents over to Amazon's Prime Video. Despite having an overall deal at the streamer, Flanagan confirmed that he could set up The Dark Tower anywhere as it was separate from his Prime contract. There's currently no guarantee that it will even get made at this point, but should he return to his collaborators at Warner Bros. it might make getting some of these characters in there a little easier.

David Fincher's Se7en Score Coming to Vinyl From Waxwork Records https://comicbook.com/horror/news/se7en-movie-seven-david-fincher-score-music-vinyl-record-waxwork/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 17:57:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh f57c6228-d157-4086-9e15-0b0c8757062a

While David Fincher's debut feature film might have been Alien 3 in 1992, his experience on the project was so frustrating that he ultimately tried to distance himself from the project as much as possible. His follow-up film, 1995's Se7en, allowed him to more fully deliver his true intentions for the unsettling serial-killer experience, which became one of the defining genre projects of the '90s. In honor of the film's accomplishments, Waxwork Records is releasing a vinyl pressing of the film's score, as composed by Howard Shore. You can head to the Waxwork Records official website to order the album now before it is released in January of 2024.

Per Waxwork Records, "Waxwork Records in association with WaterTower Music is thrilled to present the debut vinyl release of SE7EN Original Motion Picture Score by Howard Shore. Directed by David Fincher, Se7en is a 1995 gritty neo-noir film starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey.

"Pitt and Freeman star as Detectives Mills and Somerset as they search for the elusive serial killer John Doe (Spacey), who has been carrying out meticulously planned murders based on each of the Seven Deadly Sins. As the murders pile up, the detectives gain insight to John Doe's twisted philosophy, leading to the grizzly end of his terrible crime spree.

"The score by master composer Howard Shore brings a somber and menacing component to the movie. The dark and symphonic orchestrations undercut Fincher's gruesome images with an unyielding tension throughout the film. Shore's deep resonant brass and high eerie strings drag the listener deeper into the cruel and chaotic world of SE7EN.

"Waxwork Records is proud to release SE7EN Original Motion Picture Score by Howard Shore for the first time on vinyl as a deluxe 2xLP. Features include 150-gram colored vinyl, heavyweight gatefold jackets with matte satin coating, 11"x11" printed insert, and layout and design by Steve Reeves."

The upcoming Se7en release includes:

  • The complete 1995 score by composer Howard Shore
  • 150-gram "Lust & Sloth"-colored vinyl
  • Heavyweight gatefold jackets with matte-satin coating
  • 11"x11" art print
  • Layout design from the original film elements by Steve Reeves

Max Adds Major Horror Franchise https://comicbook.com/movies/news/max-adds-major-horror-franchise/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 04:18:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 6bab5953-6ec8-400f-bbd6-9d9440dcc2d7

The first five installments in the Paranormal Activity franchise have arrived on Max. The franchise, which launched in 2007, centers on haunted spaces, and began with a found footage-style movie that used security cameras and other low-resolution cameras positioned in the practical locations in the world of the movie. Produced by Jason Blum, Paranormal Activity was one of the early horror franchises that helped elevate Blumhouse to its current perch as one of the most beloved horror and genre studios in the film industry. The series in general managed to stay successful even as its popularity waned, because it's so cheap to make.

The movies currently appearing on Max are Paranormal Activity 1 through 4, as well as the fifth movie, which is titled Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. The movie's oddball Japanese installment, Paranormal Activity II: Tokyo Night, which ran parallel to the second movie but was ultimately disregarded as canon, isn't included either.

The more recent two movies -- 2015's Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and 2021's Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin -- remain on Paramount+. Paramount is the studio responsible for distributing the franchise.

These five films all star Katie Featherston, whose character Katie was one half of the young couple haunted in the first movie. Katie continued to play a role in the first five installments -- her character having varying degrees of importance, but always tying the lore together. The two most recent movies do not feature Katie.

"I really love the fact that I'm both the damsel in distress and the bad guy," franchise star Katie Featherston told me at Scare-A-Con in 2018. "I get to do both in one character, which is really fun. I like messy characters, I like flawed characters, I like telling those kinds of stories. So even in the world of horror, I like playing this girl who's trying to keep her relationship together while everything's happening around her, and also to be able to be the bad guy that scares everybody."

There's no clear direction for the franchise right now. While the movies never took more than a couple of years off between 2007 and 2015, it was a six-year gap before Next of Kin, which went straight to streaming and seemingly failed to generate a ton of buzz.

Bruce Campbell Prefers Lighter Evil Dead Over Gory Versions https://comicbook.com/horror/news/evil-dead-franchise-humor-horror-bruce-campell-reaction-explained/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 22:04:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 85fbd49f-2663-4360-92a0-e5901eb76a95

In the 40 years since director Sam Raimi unleashed The Evil Dead on audiences, the franchise has delivered fans countless iconic moments across a variety of mediums, but according to longtime star and producer Bruce Campbell, he personally prefers when the franchise embraces the sillier side of the concept. While every entry has blended together both humor and horror, he can respect what each adventure brings to the series, but as an entertainer himself, he'd rather the material be accessible to fans of all ages. Campbell can next be seen in Discontinued when it premieres on the Maximum Effort Channel on Fubo tonight at 8 p.m. ET.

"I like it a little lighter, I'll always take the Army of Darkness way to go. My granddaughter, she's 8, I think could see that movie. It's talking skeletons, for God's sake. Evil Dead's a little grim, I like the filmmaking, Sam's a really good filmmaker, there's some great filmmaking sequences in there. A man alone in a cabin, really cool sequences, but I don't know, I wouldn't wanna get completely stuck in that world," Campbell revealed to ComicBook.com about his preferences for the franchise. "With Evil Dead 2, we started to add gags, like slapstick. We wound up calling it 'splatstick.' Only because I don't need people fainting in the theater, I'm an entertainer. I want people to scream [peeking from behind their hands]. Sort of laughing and screaming at the same time."

With the original trilogy of films from Raimi, the narrative ventured further into the comedic realm with each installment, while the 2013 remake offered little levity and instead delivered gruesome gore. This year's Evil Dead Rise similarly leaned into the violence over the humor, while all three seasons of Ash vs. Evil Dead saw Campbell and his Ash Williams embrace the absurdity of the concept.

While Campbell may have retired the role of Ash on-screen, he stays committed to the franchise as a producer.

"We let the filmmakers decide. Sam puts it on their plate," Campbell expressed. "Fede ?lvarez wanted to do a straight version, because the original Evil Dead is sort of melodramatic. [Evil Dead Rise director] Lee Cronin, his background is drama, I don't think he wanted any winking at the camera. And we don't ever try to put these guys beyond their comfort zone. I would like to see another Evil Dead 2-type movie. We've got a couple more in the pipeline and it would be nice to jolly it up a little bit, but we try to respect the filmmakers. If they're better at doing a straight horror, that's okay."

Discontinued premieres on the Maximum Effort Channel on Fubo tonight at 8 p.m. ET. Starting the following week, episodes will move to Wednesdays (December 6th being the first) at 9 p.m. ET. Maximum Effort Channel, curated by Ryan Reynolds and the Maximum Effort team in partnership with Fubo, is available to watch on Fubo as well as Amazon Freevee, LG Channels, Plex, Sling Freestream, Tubi, VIDAA, VIZIO Watchfree+ and Xumo Play.

Stay tuned for updates on the Evil Dead franchise.

Thanksgiving 2 Confirmed With Eli Roth Returning https://comicbook.com/horror/news/thanksgiving-2-confirmed-with-eli-roth-returning/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 21:53:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 2bc16d8d-b559-40d9-a946-0cd6096225bc

Over 16 years ago, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez teamed up to create the moviegoing experience, Grindhouse, which included a double feature of their films Planet Terror and Death Proof. The cinematic event also featured fake trailers for movies by Rodriguez as well as Rob Zombie, Edgar Wright, and Eli Roth. While Rodriguez got the chance to turn his trailer for Machete into a real film, many have waited for Roth to make a feature-length Thanksgiving. This holiday season, Roth's vision was finally brought to life, and the slasher was released in theaters. Turns out, the movie was worth the wait. In fact, it ended up being a hit with critics and audiences alike, earning an 83% critics score and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Following in the footsteps of Machete and Machete Kills, Thanksgiving is the latest Grindhouse spinoff to get a sequel.

Roth took to Instagram to share the news of Thanksgiving 2 in a duel post with Sony Pictures. "BEEAKING NEWS! John Carver will kill again! @thanksgivingmovie sequel is a GO!!! Thank you everyone who supported ORIGINAL HORROR in theaters!!! Go see it now on the big screen while it's in cinemas, sequel set for release in 2025! Taking a year to really get the script right, working on it starting today!" Roth shared. You can watch his video below:

Eli Roth Talks Turning Thanksgiving Into a Franchise:

ComicBook.com spoke to Roth ahead of Thanksgiving's theatrical debut and asked the filmmaker about his hopes for a sequel.

"Well, we didn't really think too much beyond this movie, but as we were shooting, you start joking around going, 'Oh yeah, we could do a movie set there, we could do this, we could do that. The Thanksgivingverse'" Roth told us. "I mean, it's completely up to the fans. But we had such a great time making it and the more you think about it, the more ideas you get. And working with this cast, which is a dream cast, the cast of a lifetime, and reuniting with Milan [Chadima] my DP from Hostel and Hostel II and the original [Thanksgiving] trailer. We were like, we don't want to stop. It was one of those shoots. It was so fast, when the shoot ended, we were really sad it was over. We thought, 'Okay, how can we get back to this?' So if the movie does well, I'd love to continue it."

Thanksgiving stars Patrick Dempsey, Rick Hoffman, Nell Verlaque, Milo Manheim, Addison Rae, Caren Cliche, Shailyn Griffen, Jenna Warren, Mike Amonsen, Gabriel Davenport, Jalen Thomas Brooks, and Gina Gershon. The film is now playing in theaters.

The Exorcist Star Linda Blair Reveals Her Complicated Connection to the Horror Franchise (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-exorcist-linda-blair-franchise-connection-reaction-explained-fans/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 21:13:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh d7fdfb13-c508-46ab-9b81-6f6865fc3c2d

For her performance as Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist, Linda Blair earned herself a Golden Globe Award as well as a nomination for an Academy Award, and she went on to reprise the role for 1977's Exorcist II: The Heretic and had a cameo in this year's The Exorcist: Believer. While there are a number of positive experiences she earned from the role, which includes amplifying her charitable work with the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, not everything that has happened in connection with the role has been positive, as her involvement in the controversial film also saw her becoming the target of various organizations. Additionally, being such a young actor and bringing such an intense storyline to life during a much different era of filmmaking means even her firsthand experiences with director William Friedkin brought with it some unexpected challenges. The Exorcist: Deceiver is set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025. You can learn more about the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation at its official website.

"It's never going to go away. And how incredible that, years later, people are still so involved that they share the project, the movie with their friends, their children?" Blair recalled to ComicBook.com of being so closely intertwined with the film and its legacy. "It is an adult film. I actually rewatched it the other night it was on TV and I just wanted to refresh my memories. And working with Max von Sydow, working with Jason Miller, working with Billy Friedkin, and they did a tribute to Billy Friedkin and it was fascinating. It was 1973 when he did this interview talking about all his movies. That was the person I worked with, not the one 30, 40, 50 years later that people got to know and meet after he's doing operas and different things. He's a very precise director and he embedded a lot in me, good and bad, that were very difficult. The project was not easy."

She continued, "That was an extremely rare, unique novel that Bill Blatty wrote and bringing it to screen was not without a lot of complications. The industry didn't want the movie. They fought hard, they got it made. But there's a lot of things that went into that left ... There's a lot of trauma there. I'll write about that in my autobiography, if I can ever get the time, so people could better understand the journey I had to go through, and post, for me, how the public treated me, how the churches treated me, religious groups and how they run this country. They can love you and they can hang you, and it's very dangerous."

Blair pointed out how, even at such a young age, her acting and modeling opportunities were merely a pathway to secure the funds to be able to explore animal-related endeavors as an adult. She would go on to launch the WorldHeart Foundation in 2003. Even with her cameo in this year's Believer, Blair was initially involved in the project to help consult with the film's young stars, though her one scene as Regan allowed her to offer audiences some closure on the character.

"That's a lot that I learned from coming out of it and I had nothing to do with it," Blair confessed. "I hope that people realize I worked very hard. I am proud of the film."

The Exorcist Star Linda Blair Weighs in on Recasting Regan for Believer Sequels (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-exorcist-deceiver-linda-blair-future-return-sequels-believer-regan/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 20:35:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh f410e08e-a418-4910-be63-844f21e55f9d

After earning worldwide acclaim for her performance as Regan MacNeil in 1973's The Exorcist, actor Linda Blair returned to the franchise for 1977's Exorcist II: The Heretic. Both Blair and Regan were largely absent from the franchise for decades, though Blair did appear in a cameo in this year's The Exorcist: Believer. With Blair's priorities being her activism work with the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, this would call into question how either she or Regan would be involved in the planned Believer sequels. In regards to whether that would mean the franchise would find a new performer to play Regan or pivot away from the character entirely for those sequels, Blair noted that she's not aware of what the filmmakers aim to accomplish, but expressed how she knows just how passionate audiences can be for specific characters and specific performers and the complications that could cause. The Exorcist: Deceiver currently has a release date of April 18, 2025. You can learn more about the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation at its official website.

"Audience-wise, it's important to pay attention to your audience. That's with many movies, when you have a company that cares about the audience, about the actors that are part of the films or if there's a trilogy or in a comic book world, you've got all the different characters. People, really, I think, besides the Joker, which has changed so many times where they're like, 'Okay,' they enjoy each one, but there are those that a certain person, a certain character, that's who they are, and they don't want to see anybody else playing that particular part," Blair confessed to ComicBook.com on the topic of recasting. "As far as the new film went, we knew that it was important. The audience made it very clear online that Regan is the film. With Ellen Burstyn, there's no finer actress. I mean, she is incredible, incredible to be around, incredible to watch her work, incredible on screen. But the audience was mad, they wanted Regan."

She added, "What the production company felt, Blumhouse and David Gordon Green, they wanted to go a little different direction but still honor the legacy of the project. They realized that we better throw Linda in there. It was a lot of ask for me, but we all made the agreement that, by doing this, that it would bring light to the animals that I am so passionate to see that change made."

Ahead of the film's release, the filmmakers confirmed that Blair served as a consultant on the project to work with the young stars of the film, given her firsthand experience of bringing such a harrowing story to life. Were the series to find a new performer to play Regan, it wouldn't be the first time, as the first season of the TV series The Exorcist revealed deep into its storyline that the character played by Geena Davis was an adult Regan whose family had once again become the target of demonic forces.

"That was the point of doing it, to give some kind of relief to the audience that I was still supporting it and that I was alive and well, and that they would follow me off-screen and realize that whether it's Regan or Linda, we're all the same, that we care about the animals, and that was the point of doing it," Blair continued. "I'm not sure they know what they're going to do with their future projects. I only know that [the Llinda Blair WorldHeart Foundation] is my passion and my work. So I'm hoping that people will help me to make the changes that need to be made. Because if you love animals, you get it, you understand it, help me to realize I can stand up against those that are bullying and causing all the trouble. I can, but I need the support. You cannot do it, you can't go this alone."

The Exorcist: Deceiver currently has a release date of April 18, 2025. You can learn more about the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation at its official website.

FX's Alien TV Series Adds New Cast Members https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/fx-alien-tv-series-new-cast-members/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 04:58:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 4d4dffef-87ab-4039-ae35-9931c1034918

The Alien franchise has begun to branch out into television, with a new live-action series in the works for FX. As a new report reveals, a number of new cast members will be joining the show's unexpected sci-fi story. According to a new report, Babou Ceesay (Guerrilla, Damilola), Jonathan Ajayi (Wonder Woman 1984, Noughts and Crosses), Erana James (Uproar, The Wilds), Lily Newmark (Pin Cushion, Sex Education), Di?m Camille (Washington Black, Alex Rider 3), and Adrian Edmondson (War & Peace, A Spy Among Friends) will join the ensemble cast of Alien. Details about their roles have not been revealed at this time.

What Is the Alien TV Show About?

Alien is described as a prequel to the beloved film series, set roughly 70 years in the future, but years before Sigourney Weaver's Ripley. It is the first story in the franchise that takes place on Earth.

"It's the first story in the Alien franchise that takes place on Earth. It takes place on our planet, near the end of this century we're currently in - 70-odd years from now," FX CEO John Landgraf previously said of the series. "I hope they will feel like it's faithful to the franchise they love but also a brave and original reinvention of that franchise... Setting it on Earth is really interesting. We have to think forward about the future of the planet in terms of the environment, governance, technology and create and design a version of the planet in the future ... Noah wants to do that in a distinctive and original way."

Who Is in the Cast of the Alien TV Show?

The ensemble cast of the Alien series includes Timothy Olyphant, Sydnee Chandler, Alex Lawther as CJ, Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, Essie Davis as Dame Silvia, and Adarsh Gourav as Slightly.

"It's set on Earth of the future. At this moment, I describe that as Edison versus Westinghouse versus Tesla," Hawley explained to Esquire back in 2022. "Someone's going to monopolize electricity. We just don't know which one it is ... In the movies, we have this Weyland-Yutani Corporation, which is clearly also developing artificial intelligence-but what if there are other companies trying to look at immortality in a different way, with cyborg enhancements or transhuman downloads? Which of those technologies is going to win?"

"Alien is a fascinating story because it's not just a monster movie; it's about how we're trapped between the primordial past and the artificial intelligence of our future, where both trying to kill us..." Hawley added. "As Sigourney Weaver said in that second movie, 'I don't know which species is worse. At least they don't f-ck each other over for a percentage.' Even if the show was 60% of the best horror-action on the planet, there's still 40% where we have to ask, 'What are we talking about it, beneath it all?' Thematically, it has to be interesting. It's humbling to get to play with the iconography of this world."

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Rumored to Be in Development https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/five-nights-at-freddys-2-fnaf-development-rumor-emma-tammi/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 03:50:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps cb38efa2-2321-436c-a82a-104a387f4b5a

Five Nights at Freddy's released in theaters and on Peacock last month, and the movie has been a huge success for Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures. While Five Nights at Freddy's was one of the most expensive movies Blumhouse has ever produced, the risk paid off, as it also became the company's highest-grossing movie ever. It should come as little surprise then that rumors of a sequel have begun to circulate. According to reporting from The Hollywood Handle, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is not only happening, it will also see the return of director Emma Tammi.

Loose Ends in Five Nights at Freddy's

Until we see confirmation from Blumhouse, Universal, or Tammi, readers should take this with a grain of salt. That said, a Five Nights at Freddy's sequel seems extremely likely. The movie's ending definitely left the door open for a second movie, with some very big questions left over. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month, Tammi herself said that there are some loose ends that could be addressed. The director specifically mentioned Mike and Abby's Aunt Jane, who was played in the movie by Mary Stuart Masterson. Jane was something of an antagonist in the movie, and while she was seemingly killed by Freddy Fazbear, we never saw her final fate, leaving her potentially alive.

While Tammi did not reference her character, there's also Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), who was comatose at the end of the movie. These loose ends, combined with the deep lore and multiple video game sequels that make up the franchise, could give us an idea what to expect from Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Blumhouse and Horror Games

Five Nights at Freddy's marked the first movie based on a horror game for Blumhouse Productions. Obviously, that number will grow if the studio makes a sequel to the movie, but we could see a lot more video game adaptations from them in the future. Back in July, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum told Discussing Film that he wants the studio to make more horror movies based on video games. That statement came shortly after the success of Universal's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and it's clear that more and more companies are seeing the potential benefit of bringing video games to the big screen.

Now that Five Nights at Freddy's is a bonafide hit for Blumhouse, it seems increasingly likely that this will happen. Big horror game franchises like Silent Hill and Resident Evil are spoken for, but there are a lot of other options out there, particularly from indie developers. Games like Layers of Fear, Sally Face, or Darkwood could all end up being options for Blumhouse, and even draw new audiences to those games.

Scream 7: New Report Suggests Jenna Ortega Departure Wasn't Over Scheduling Issues https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-7-jenna-ortega-departure-not-scheduling-issues-report/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 01:01:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 0e0a1e85-fe64-4fe8-ba9a-8e347032843d

A wicked web continues to be weaved around the development of Scream VI, with new reports pointing to a change in the reasoning behind Jenna Ortega's departure from the franchise. Hours after it was revealed Spyglass fired Melissa Barrera from Scream VII, news surfaced suggesting Ortega was leaving the property as well. At the time, it was said Ortega wouldn't be able to appear in the film because of scheduling conflicts with Netflix's wildly popular Wednesday Season Two. Now, it's said that's not the case at all.

A new report from THR says Ortega instead left after she and her team were unable to strike a new deal with Spyglass executives. The actor had been paid sums in the six digits for her two previous appearances in Scream pictures so far, and her team was reportedly looking for a pay raise into the seven figures. Neither Ortega or her team have issued an official statement on the matter.

The seventh film in the franchise will be directed by Christopher Landon, and it's expected a new script will be written from scratch after the project's latest cast shuffles.

The situation mirrors that of Neve Campbell, the former Scream start who left after 2022's Scream 5 due to not receiving equal pay with her costars.

"Sadly I won't be making the next Scream film," Campbell previously told Deadline of her Scream exit. "As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream."

She added, "I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It's been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You've always been so incredibly supportive to me. I'm forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years."

Scream V and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream VII is in development and has yet to set a release date.

Five Nights at Freddy's Home Release Date and Special Features Announced https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/five-nights-freddys-blu-ray-dvd-release-date-special-features/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 20:40:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely f9e1ac46-c56f-41a1-a0c4-684b76558f87

After debuting to massive streaming numbers on Peacock, and becoming the biggest theatrical movie in Blumhouse history, Five Nights at Freddy's is preparing for a digital and physical home release. The film is already available to purchase on video on-demand retailers and Universal announced on Wednesday that Five Nights at Freddy's will be getting a physical home media release in December.

Five Nights at Freddy's will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 12th. This follows the film's VOD release earlier this week.

All versions of the Five Nights at Freddy's home release (including VOD) will come with a few special features that give fans never-before-seen looks behind the scenes. You can check out the full list of special features below.

  • Five Nights at Freddy's: From Game to Big Screen -- Feel the frights of Freddy Fazbear's come alive as the film recreates the game's world with immersive environments and wild surprises that'll haunt longtime fans and newcomers alike.
  • Killer Animatronics -- Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy transform from cute and cuddly into creepy and killer through a combination of costumed performers and cutting-edge puppetry.
  • Five Nights in Three Dimensions -- Five Nights at Freddy's takes a two-dimensional game and turns it into a three-dimensional nightmare.

Five Nights at Freddy's Sequel

A sequel hasn't been officially announced by Blumhouse, but another Five Nights at Freddy's feels like all but a sure thing after the movie's box office success. Count the film's director among those anxiously awaiting news that the franchise is moving forward.

"We're all, including myself, very excited to keep making movies in this universe if we're lucky enough to do so and this first one does well," Tammi told The Hollywood Reporter last month.

Tammi also revealed that there were certain "loose ends" left without a conclusion, allowing space for more stories in a potential second film.

"We have some loose ends that I think are going to have to come back in a sequel to be tied up," the director responded when asked about the Mary Stuart Masterson's character.

Tammi had a similar response when asked for clarity on Mike's brother, Garrett. It was suggested that Garrett was killed but his ghost was never a part of the visions and his body wasn't in any of the animatronics, at least that we saw.

"I feel like that could also be a nice thing for the fan base to mull over," Tammi said. "I'd love to not shut down anyone's theories."

Bruce Campbell Pitched Sgt. Rock Vs The Army of the Dead Movie to Sam Raimi (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/bruce-campbell-pitched-sgt-rock-vs-the-army-of-the-dead-movie-to-sam-raimi-exclusive/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 20:23:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 1f67f317-7570-4778-8f69-0738708f6c5d

About a year ago, Bruce Campbell made his superhero comics-writing debut. But despite having appeared in a number of Marvel movies, Campbell's first foray into writing superheroes was for DC, where he worked with artist Eduardo Risso on DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead. The series, which was recently released as a collected edition, is exactly what it says on the tin: DC's classic wartime hero Sgt. Rock facing off against an army of the undead. The story begins in Berlin, 1944. The Nazis are flanked on all fronts by the combined Allied forces, and defeat seems inevitable. In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war, Hitler and his team of evil scientists create a serum that resurrects their dead soldiers, creating an army of the dead even stronger than they were in life. Sgt. Rock, hero of the European Theatre, and his Easy Company find themselves dispatched into enemy territory to face off against the strangest, most horrific enemies they've encountered yet: Nazi Zombies.

Despite more recent depictions of Sgt. Rock as a grizzled, aging war veteran, it sounds like Campbell would want to see a younger leading man for the role, suggesting that the role could go to one of the Hemsworth brothers. What role that would leave open for Campbell in the film is anybody's guess.

"Man, that's a Michael Bay movie if I've ever seen one," Campbell told ComicBook.com. "You get one of the Hemsworth boys -- you get the cheaper one to play Sgt. Rock. It's a Brad Pitt-y kind of role. You need that tough guy blond dude."

"Oh my God, I think that it came out just now as a graphic novel, they put all is issues together, and I want to put that on Michael Bay's desk and be like, 'Dude, get going, start prep,'" Campbell added.

And, yes, before you asked, Campbell already pitched it to Sam Raimi, whose own undead series -- The Evil Dead -- introduced Raimi to the world.

"I gave it to Sam Raimi. I said 'Sam, your next movie,'" Campbell said, but he suggested that Raimi wasn't interested in taking on the project. Maybe producing Evil Dead remakes and making Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is close enough to a DC/zombies crossover that the director feels like he's already been there and done it.

Discontinued will premiere on Maximum Effort Channel on Fubo this Thursday, November 30th at 8:00PM ET. Starting the following week, episodes will move to Wednesdays (12/6 being the first) at 9:00PM ET.

The Black Phone Original Cast Returning for Sequel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/black-phone-2-ethan-hawke-return-cast-grabber-scott-derrickson/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 19:37:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh dbd48cac-2883-4c8f-b227-0caf24f9244a

While the events of The Black Phone would lead audiences to assume Ethan Hawke's The Grabber had met his demise, Deadline confirms that Hawke is set to make his return to the series for the announced sequel. Hawke isn't the only original cast member set to return, as the outlet noted that Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora were also making a comeback. The new film is set to be developed by original director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill, though it is not yet known whether Derrickson will be returning to direct. The Black Phone 2 currently has a June 27, 2025 release date.

The original movie was based on a short story from author Joe Hill, who is on board to serve as a producer of the sequel. With the original story being part of an anthology collection of stories, some theories assumed a continuation would explore other stories that were set in that world that weren't directly connected to the events of The Black Phone. Given how early into development the project is, it's possible the returning cast could only be making small appearances in the continuation of the narrative and that the sequel will introduce new characters.

The first movie focused on a young boy (Thames) getting kidnapped by The Grabber and being imprisoned in his basement. While there, he received otherworldly transmissions on a black phone that came from The Grabber's former victims. Hill himself previously recalled how, whatever the future might hold for the franchise, he thinks the iconography of the film could help birth a new horror icon.

"There have been some really, really good conversations about a sequel. And the thing is, as soon as I saw the mask, which was designed by Tom Savini and Jason Baker, as soon as I saw the mask I thought, 'If this film is a hit, there'll be a sequel,' because the mask is so iconic," Hill admitted to ComicBook.com in 2022 about a sequel. "It is like Freddy Krueger's glove, it is like Michael Myers' mask, it is this thing where it's the imagery, iconic imagery, that haunts people's sleep. And, look, in horror, guys like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, and Frankenstein, and Dracula, none of these guys stay buried. They all claw their way out of the grave for a sequel and then a threequel."

He continued, "There have been talks about how to do a sequel that wouldn't suck. How to do a sequel that doesn't cheapen the film that came before, that's still scary, that's still intense, that feels organic. And those conversations have been pretty good. But if I were to provide any details, Scott and [writer C. Robert] Cargill would lock me in the basement in the film, and that's it. And the phone doesn't work. As you know, the phone doesn't work. I can't call anyone to get out. So I would decline to offer any real granular details about the possible sequel."

The Black Phone 2 currently has a June 27, 2025 release date.

It's a Wonderful Knife Star Jane Widdop Has Wild Idea for a Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/its-a-wonderful-knife-star-jane-widdop-has-wild-idea-for-a-sequel/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 19:12:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 30598e34-2a64-43fa-9c65-5a505cab4a28

Jane Widdop, the actor who plays Winnie Carruthers in the new holiday horror movie It's a Wonderful Knife, says that they have a wild idea for a sequel -- one that plays into the time- and space-bending concept of the movie. A riff on It's a Wonderful Life, the movie centers on a woman whose life is irreparably transformed when she comes across a slasher. When she wishes she was never born, she finds herself transported to a world where the slasher never met her, and was therefore never stopped. In Widdop's sequel, they double down on that concept, introducing the idea of an evil doppelganger of one of the characters and forcing another trip through time.

Widdop told ComicBook.com that they would love to see a version of the story where Winnie has to keep Bernie (Jess McLeod) alive, while also facing off with a dark Bernie from another timeline that has somehow find her way to their world.

"I would love a sequel because personally I want to see Bernie and Winnie living their wonderful lives -- no pun intended," Widdop told ComicBook.com. "I do think I would want it set at Christmas. I have this really wild theory for a sequel: so essentially we pick up where we left off, and I realize that there are two Bernies -- that I brought back an evil Bernie, and so we have to go all the way back in time to the very beginning and we have to figure out what we did wrong to make evil Bernie come into our reality, and then try and get rid of evil Bernie."

It's a Wonderful Knife joins a number of public domain stories that have been picked up for recent horror movies. Recently, Uncork'd Entertainment revealed plans for horror movies based on both Mary Had A Little Lamb and Three Blind Mice. A sequel to the indie horror phenomenon Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey is currently in development for a planned 2024 release.

In It's a Wonderful Knife, a year after saving her town from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve, Winnie Carruthers' life is less than wonderful -- but when she wishes she'd never been born, she finds herself in a nightmare parallel universe and discovers that without her, things could be much, much worse. Now the killer is back, and she must team up with the town misfit to identify the killer and get back to her own reality. RJLE Films describes the project as "It's a Wonderful Life by way of Scream."

It's a Wonderful Knife was produced by Seth Caplan (Brooklyn 45), Michael Kennedy (Freaky) and Daniel Bekerman (The Witch). It's a Divide and Conquer production with Greg Gilreath (Vengeance), and Adam Hendricks (Black Christmas) and in association with Fourth Culture Films.

It's a Wonderful Knife will be released On Shudder on AMC+ and everywhere you rent movies on December 1, 2023.

Alien TV Series Showrunner Talks How Prequel Channels the Spirit of the Franchise https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-prequel-tv-series-tone-theme-explained-concept-noah-hawley/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 18:57:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh b7618339-426d-4550-bc27-e6844d6a6d48

When it comes to major sci-fi brands like Star Wars or Star Trek, their decades of stories have seen adventures unfold both in theaters and on the small screen, with each respective brand evoking specific vibes that set themselves apart from one another. The Alien franchise, on the other hand, has only earned theatrical installments, so for Noah Hawley's upcoming TV series set in that world, fans are curious about how those themes and ideas will translate into long-form storytelling, with the showrunner recently explaining how he aims to capture the tone of the franchise. The Alien TV series is expected to be unleashed in 2025 on FX.

"The reality is, when you get right down to it, there are three science fiction brands -- there's Star Trek, Star Wars, and Alien -- and they each have a completely unique look. You would never confuse Star Trek for Alien, or Star Wars for Star Trek," Hawley explained to Collider. "I don't know that it's intimidating as much as it is a challenge that is an exciting challenge. When we started Fargo, I felt liberated because I thought, 'Well, this is such a terrible idea to try to make a show called Fargo that is adjacent to the movie, but it has nothing to do with the movie, that three people will watch and two of them will hate watch it.' On some level, it felt like I was liberated to give it my all and really go for it. There was no playing it safe."

He continued, "Since then, I was gonna make a Star Trek movie, and I have been talking with FX about Alien for many years. I've gained confidence in my process and this idea. All I do is go back to Fargo the movie, or Alien the movie, and I think, 'Well, what did I feel while I was watching it?' And then, I try to create those feelings in the audience while telling them a completely different story, but it's not really about, 'What are the elements from the movie that I need?,' or 'They had a car salesman, and I'll have an insurance salesman.'"

The showrunner went on to note that, whether it be Fargo or Alien, it isn't so much about replicating plot points so much as about replicating emotional reactions to the material.

"It's really about that moment at the end of Fargo where he got the three-cent stamp and she's gonna have the baby, and you feel this amazing sense of, they're safe now. It's that feeling. We need to build to the power of that feeling so that it really lands," Hawley explained. "And Alien has its own set of feelings, and a sense of dread and discovery. It's a deeply unsettling movie, but strangely, I look at it almost like Waiting for Godot. You've got Yaphet Kotto and Harry Dean Stanton. It's about a group of people who are going to a place they don't know where, to do a thing they don't know what, for someone they don't know who. It's such an existential blue-collar journey. But if you copy it precisely, then just watch the movie. You have to do something with it that's, on some level, totally different and yet feels similar. As you said, every time you watch Fargo, you're like, 'How does it feel the same, but totally different?'"

Stay tuned for updates on the Alien TV series.

Alien TV Series Showrunner Hints at Multi-Season Plan for Prequel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-tv-series-seasons-story-length-plans-noah-hawley/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 17:44:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 5c2890e8-a7ae-4a8c-9f95-5113eb05d586

The current landscape of prestige TV series means we don't always know the difference between a limited series and an ongoing storyline, and while we know we can expect one season of storytelling from Noah Hawley's upcoming Alien program, the showrunner recently addressed how he's approaching the overall length of the story. The filmmaker compared his approach to the project to his approach to the Marvel series Legion, which ran for three seasons, so while he might not have explicitly claimed the Alien show will have a similar length, he did break down how he and his team conceived of the material.

"There's definitely a place that I'm going, which I had with Legion, also. I just don't necessarily know how long it's gonna take me to get there, and on some level, I don't want to know too much," Hawley recalled to Collider. "Once you remove the play and the potential and the imagination, that's why I've stopped outlining anything. First of all, no one ever said, 'That's the best outline I ever read.' And second of all, it's just a different part of your brain, honestly. It's a different part of your brain that thinks about story that way versus the part of your brain that is writing the story. What we do is we get the writers in a room and we've got the whiteboards and we start big picture."

He continued, "We start to write stuff in, like 'Episode 5, this might happen.' We get a loose structure to it and a sense of, 'All right, this is the episode where this needs to happen.' And then, the writing process allows more discovery and allows the characters to live on the page in a way that doesn't stifle the creativity. That said, in order to make things feel random and have coincidence and those real-life elements that we have, you do have to plan that pretty profoundly, but within that, I like to leave room to discover."

In this regard, it doesn't sound like the project will embrace an anthology premise like Hawley's Fargo, which has allowed multiple disconnected stories to be told in that world. With the project likely to have a relatively large budget, due to its sci-fi themes, the length of the series will likely be dependent upon how popular it is and whether FX opts to pursue the costly endeavor.

Stay tuned for updates on the Alien TV series.

Blumhouse's Night Swim Gets Creepy New Trailer https://comicbook.com/horror/news/night-swim-horror-movie-blumhouse-james-wan-trailer-wyatt-russell/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 16:30:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 56a5aa87-55cf-4bbf-991f-15ea72783770

In contemporary horror history, the earliest months of the year are typically a dumping ground for genre adventures, as the summer and fall months are usually when the most anticipated releases of the year are unleashed. This year, Blumhouse Productions bucked that trend with M3GAN, which remained one of the most financially and critically successful horror movies of 2023, something they hope to replicate with the disturbing new experience Night Swim. An all-new trailer for Night Swim has been released, which you can check out below. Night Swim is currently set to land in theaters on January 5, 2024.

Per press release, "No running. No diving. No lifeguard on duty. No swimming after dark. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, the producers of M3GAN, high dive into the deep end of horror with the new supernatural thriller, Night Swim.

"Based on the acclaimed 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, the film stars Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve (Oscar nominee Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin), teenage daughter Izzy (Am?lie Hoeferle, this fall's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and young son Elliot (Gavin Warren, Fear the Walking Dead).

"Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home's shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home's past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.

"Night Swim is written and directed by Bryce McGuire (writer of the upcoming film Baghead) and is produced by James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring franchises, and Jason Blum, the producer of the Halloween films, The Black Phone, and The Invisible Man. The film is executive produced by Michael Clear and Judson Scott for Wan's Atomic Monster and by Ryan Turek for Blum's Blumhouse."

Blumhouse didn't only kick off the year with an impressive showing, as their recently released Five Nights at Freddy's has become the studio's top-grossing movie. Making that feat all the more impressive is that the movie accomplished this while also being available to stream at home on Peacock.

Night Swim hits theaters on January 5, 2024.

Ms. Marvel Star Iman Vellani Teases Major Role in Upcoming Marvel Zombies Series https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-zombies-tv-series-update-iman-vellani-kamala-khan-main-character/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 00:32:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw a19ea05d-59c7-4cb3-b9b2-dd681db3ec6f

The Marvels has seemingly solidified actress Iman Vellani (and her character, Kamala Khan) as THE new face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. Vellani got her start on the small screen, headlining her own Ms. Marvel Disney+ series; now she's impressed an even wider demographic of MCU fans with her starring role in The Marvels. Now Vellani will be crossing the third quadrant of MCU content of her list, by taking on a starring voice role in the Marvel Zombies animated series!

In an interview with The Direct, Iman Vellani confirmed the current status of Marvel Zombies, saying, "We've done the whole thing. It was amazing. It was so much fun. And I love--there are a lot of cool characters in the 'Marvel Zombies' show."

What Is Marvel Zombies About?

We got a taste of the Marvel Zombies Universe in What If...? Season 1 Episode 5, which was titled "What If... Zombies?!" That episode took us to a version of Earth where Hank Pym found Janet van Dyne in the Quantum Realm during the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp - only to find out that Janet had been infected with a Quantum virus that essentially zombified her. Hank brought the Zombie-Janet and the infection back to Earth, where it quickly became a Zombie Apocalypse, sweeping across the planet.

The Marvel Zombies series will reimagine "the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge."

Iman Vellani has confirmed that the Marvel Zombies series will be thrusting Kamala Khan into the center of the story about that dark world, saying: "Kamala is kind of the center of the show. They described it to me, it's like, 'She's basically the Frodo of the story.' And I was like, 'That's amazing.'"

The story of the "What If... Zombies?!" episode saw the surviving Avengers band together to find a cure - which they did in the form of Vision's Mind Stone, which can reverse the effects of the virus. The episode ended with Vision giving up his life and the Mind Stone in the battle with Zombie-Scarlet Witch, while Peter Parker, T'Challa, and Scott Lang's head were en route to Wakanda to spread the effects of the Mind Stone across the world. However, in true horror movie fashion, the final scene wasn't a hopeful one: Wakanda had been overrun run by Zombie-Thanos in a skewed version of Avengers: Infinity War's Battle of Wakanda. It had MCU fans buzzing with theories about what kind of darkness a Zombie-Thanos would unleash with a completed Infinity Gauntlet.

Marvel Zombies is Directed by Executive Producer Bryan Andrews and written by Executive Producer Zeb Wells. It is set for release in 2024 on Disney+.

It will be interesting to see if this update will give players a reason to stick with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, or an incentive for lapsed fans to come back. Online games like this can only thrive if people have a reason to stick around, and it seems the developers are listening to players to find areas where things can be improved. Hopefully, there will be a lot more new content added to the game in the coming months!

Dr. Death Season 2 Gets Trailer From Peacock https://comicbook.com/horror/news/dr-death-season-2-peacock-streaming-trailer-release-mandy-moore/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 18:05:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 35b4d18f-4972-46eb-8a04-a1a4d8cc8f0b

An all-new season of the creepy Peacock series Dr. Death is on the way, unraveling a fresh mystery that has been ripped straight from the headlines, with today seeing a trailer being released by the streamer to shed some insight into the unsettling experience. With a new season, Dr. Death is embracing an anthology format, which means enlisting performers like Mandy Moore and Edgar Ram?rez to tell a fresh tale of terror. Much like the first season, this new batch of episodes is also based on a real-life figure, with the series shining a light on how fact is far more macabre than fiction. Check out the trailer for Season 2 of Dr. Death below before it premieres on Peacock on December 21st.

Peacock describes, "This season of Dr. Death, based on the Wondery podcast, follows 'Miracle Man' Paolo Macchiarini, a charming surgeon renowned for his innovative operations. When investigative journalist Benita Alexander approaches him for a story, the line between personal and professional begins to blur, changing her life forever. As she learns how far Paolo will go to protect his secrets, a group of doctors halfway across the world make shocking discoveries of their own that call everything about Paolo into question."

Luke Kirby, Ashley Madekwe, and Gustaf Hammarsten also star in the new season.

Showrunner Ashley Michel Hoban shared of the new season, "The joy of an anthology series is the freedom to explore variations on a theme. Dr. Death is a show about systemic failures, and this season, these issues reach a global scale. Amid complex narratives, we've been fortunate to delve deeply into a story that, while entirely unique, remains surprisingly familiar, as it taps into a truly universal part of the human condition: illness. Even putting aside any recent global pandemics, we all know what it's like to feel sick. It renders us vulnerable, small, in desperate need of help. A doctor we can trust."

Hoban added, "This pursuit of trust and truth is what ties our two stories together this season. Two stories that, on the surface, may not seem to have much else in common: Doctors in Sweden on the verge of a breakthrough. A journalist in New York falling in love. However, both revolve around individuals made to feel small. They're about people standing up to something bigger, for something bigger, and how their seemingly small choices ripple out into the world to give power and voice to those who have been made to feel powerless and silenced. These are stories that you don't think could happen to you, until you watch this season of Dr. Death. We truly hope you enjoy."

Season 2 of Dr. Death premieres on Peacock on December 21st.

Alien Prequel Series Adds Fargo Star David Rysdahl to Cast https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/alien-prequel-series-casts-david-rysdahl-timothy-olyphant-noah-hawley/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 18:00:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 55eb6c4a-007a-4d05-a4fe-2d363b39c1cc

Is Noah Hawley's Alien TV series just Fargo with Xenomorphs? After adding Timothy Olyphant, who appeared on season 4 of the anthology series, FX's Alien has cast another Fargo star in an undisclosed role: David Rysdahl. The Oppenheimer and No Exit actor joins a cast that includes Sydney Chandler (Don't Worry Darling) as Wendy, a meta-human; Alex Lawther (Star Wars: Andor) as CJ, a soldier; Samuel Blenkin (The Sandman) as Boy Kavalier, a CEO; and Essie Davis (Game of Thrones) as Dame Silvia, Adarsh Gourav (The White Tiger) as Slightly, and Kit Young (Shadow and Bone) as Tootles. Deadline first reported the news.

Details about Rysdahl's character are under wraps. It was reported that Olyphant is playing a "major" role as Kirsh, described as "a synth who acts as a mentor and trainer" for Chandler's Wendy, "a hybrid meta-human who has the brain and consciousness of a child but the body of an adult."

fx-alien-cast-david-rysdahl.jpg

Little is known about the Alien prequel executive produced by Ridley Scott except that it's set on Earth decades before the Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) era of Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3.

"Alien takes place before Ripley," FX chief John Landgraf said during the 2022 Television Critics Association press tour. "It's the first story in the Alien franchise that takes place on Earth. It takes place on our planet, near the end of this century we're currently in -- 70-odd years from now. All I can tell you is Ripley won't be a part of it, and neither will any other characters -- other than the alien itself."

Landgraf added that Hawley, who created FX's Fargo series now in its fifth season, "has an incredible ability to both find a way of being faithful and showing fidelity to an original creation, like to the Coen brothers [with Fargo] or to Ridley Scott's [Alien] movie and James Cameron's follow-up Aliens, but also to bring something new that represents both an extension and reinvention of a franchise at the same time. He's done a masterful job with Alien as he did with Fargo. There are some big surprises in store for the audience."

Though decades removed from the original 1979 Alien and Scott's semi-prequel/spinoff Prometheus and its sequel Alien: Covenant, Hawley's Alien series is what Landgraf hopes fans embrace as "faithful to the franchise they love but also a brave and original reinvention of that franchise."

"Setting it on Earth is really interesting," Landgraf added. "We have to think forward about the future of the planet in terms of the environment, governance, technology and create and design a version of the planet in the future ... Noah wants to do that in a distinctive and original way."

Alien does not yet have a premiere date on FX on Hulu.

Map Updates

The largest Maps in the game, The Mother's Dwelling and The Temple of Purgation of the Red Forest Realm, have been reduced in size. This will help both roles enjoy a play area that is consistent with the other maps. While we were making adjustments to the Red Forest Realm, we also did a pass on the gameplay of the tiles and improve the navigation and the readability of the map.

The Garden of Joy also benefited from a gameplay pass. The house has been revisited to find a better combination of obstacles and reduce the strength of some of the windows. A pass on the tiles has also been done, since the visibility was making it hard for players to enjoy a better navigation in the map and bring the focus on the chase, loops and all interactions. The Killer Shack was also very crowded around the walls and made the collisions known through all realms hard to run consistently, we have cleared the area.

PTB Feedback for the House in Garden Of Joy, we noticed that the position changes of the breakable walls, made it more difficult to deal with the Windows. We have removed the breakables, the structure of house is still problematic it is noted and will be part of a future pass on the building.

Autohaven Wreckers will be more festive this year with added holiday decorations in a few places within the maps.

Nosferatu Gets Christmas 2024 Release Date https://comicbook.com/horror/news/nosferatu-reboot-remake-adaptation-release-date-confirmed-christmas-robert-eggers/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 17:30:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh e65cf6ac-1065-4281-abeb-c213f6a9a530

One of the most anticipated horror movies of 2024 is Robert Eggers' new take on the 1922 classic Nosferatu, and in good news, the film has earned a release date, but in bad news, the film will only barely be released in 2024, as it is confirmed to be hitting theaters on Christmas. This release strategy looks to be an opportunity to serve as a bit of counter-programming, as the month of December is known for releasing projects that aim for awards recognition or family-friendly experiences for the holidays. Eggers, however, has already teased how frightening his take on the material will be. Nosferatu hits theaters on December 25, 2024.

Peter Kujawski, Chairman of Focus Features, stated, "The audacious filmmaking of Robert Eggers is always a gift for fans, and we can promise that his Nosferatu is planning quite the Christmas feast."

"It's a scary film. It's a horror movie. It's a Gothic horror movie," Eggers recently shared with Empire Magazine. "And I do think that there hasn't been an old-school Gothic movie that's actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case."

He added, "It's even more Ellen's story than previous versions ... And Lily-Rose is absolutely phenomenal."

One of the most anticipated elements of the new movie is seeing Skarsg?rd as the titular ghoul, with the actor previously having transformed himself to play Pennywise in two IT movies.

"I'll say that Bill has so transformed, I'm fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves because he's just... he's not there," Eggers detailed of Skarsg?rd's performance. "He felt like honouring who had come before him. It's all very subtle ... But I think the main thing is that he's even more a folk vampire. In my opinion he looks like a dead Transylvanian nobleman, and in a way that we've never actually seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would look like and be dressed like."

Nosferatu hits theaters on December 25, 2024.

New Alien Movie Takes Place Between Original and Aliens https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-movie-fede-alvarez-timeline-sequels-franchise-confirmed/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 16:55:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 9e2acc05-5de8-44ad-bb9c-52077d01d2ed

Much of the upcoming Alien movie from Fede ?lvarez has been shrouded in secrecy, but star of the project Cailee Spaeny recently confirmed the timeline in which the adventure unfolds, with the new installment set between the original 1979 Alien and the 1986 Aliens. Fans shouldn't expect much crossover between the events of the upcoming film and those previous entries, as it is expected to be a standalone adventure that unfolds parallel to the beloved sci-fi stories. To ensure the authenticity of the experience, the actor confirmed how creatives involved in Aliens came on board the project to replicate the look of that universe from around that point in time. The new Alien is set to hit theaters on August 16, 2024.

"It's supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie," Spaeny revealed to Variety. "They brought the same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible."

Also starring in the new film are Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. The movie was previously teased as following "a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

Between Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection, the first four films in the franchise followed a linear path. Original director Ridley Scott returned to the franchise with 2011's Prometheus, which served as a prequel to the whole franchise. He followed this with Alien: Covenant, which served as a sequel to Prometheus that still managed to take place before Alien. Scott had previously expressed that he aimed to develop another sequel that connected these prequels more directly to Alien, but those plans seemingly dissolved.

Despite stepping into a series that Scott was still invested in, ?lvarez claims that Scott had a promising response to the new film.

"He walks into the room and he did say, 'Fede, what can I say? It's f-cking great,'" ?lvarez revealed during a DGA presentation earlier this year about Scott's reaction. "For me it was like ... My family knows it was one of the best moments of my life to have a master like him, who I admired so much, to even watch a movie I made -- but particularly something like this ... and talk to me for an hour about what he liked about it. One of the best compliments he said was, 'The dialogue is great. Are you the writer?' Yes!"

The new Alien is set to hit theaters on August 16, 2024.

Stephen King's The Long Walk Gets I Am Legend Director https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-long-walk-stephen-king-movie-new-director-francis-lawrence/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 16:18:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 737c30d8-dfbe-454a-bc16-a6670a02e130

Director Andr? ?vredal has been attached to an adaptation of Stephen King's The Long Walk for years, only for him to reveal the disappointing news that he was no longer involved with the project just earlier this year. The project isn't dead, however, as Business Insider revealed that I Am Legend and Constantine director Francis Lawrence is now on board the adaptation, though the director himself failed to offer any insight into how he secured the gig. While fans were understandably disappointed by ?vredal leaving the project, knowing we'll be getting the project at some point will excite fans.

"I'm now attached to The Long Walk, the Stephen King book. Very excited about that," Lawrence revealed to the outlet.

Stephen King's website describes the story, "In the near future, where America has become a police state, one hundred boys are selected to enter an annual contest where the winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life. The game is simple -- maintain a steady walking pace of four miles per hour without stopping. Three warnings, and you're out -- permanently."

For nearly four years, ?vredal offered teases about his work on the project, with one of the major hurdles being the coronavirus pandemic putting a hold on all movie and TV productions around the world. Since he was announced as being attached to the project, the director delivered the features films Mortal and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. While fans will be excited to know the King story is being developed at all, ?vredal previously expressed his disappointment in not getting to bring the project to life.

"I'm unfortunately not, but it's one of the big regrets in my life not to have made that movie," the filmmaker shared with Collider this past August when asked if he was still developing the adaptation.

Another project ?vredal has reportedly been developing for years is a sequel to his 2019 Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which he confirmed earlier this year was still on the way. Lawrence himself has a handful of exciting projects on the horizon, as he's next set to deliver a Constantine sequel and is reportedly developing a sequel to I Am Legend.

Stay tuned for updates on The Long Walk movie.

Edgar Wright Explains Why U.S. TV Remake of Shaun of the Dead Never Happened https://comicbook.com/horror/news/shaun-of-the-dead-tv-cancelled-edgar-wright-explains-why/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 04:02:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 11e0a4e8-5aa4-4acd-9758-fc3393e00295

Fans have longed for a follow-up to Shaun of the Dead for quite some time, even though those involved in the project want to see the franchise remain at a single film. At one point, according to helmer Edgar Wright, there were even talks to turn the zombie comedy into a television series here in the United States. Wright, however, didn't want to see the film adapted into something else.

"There have been some conversations about that, yes. We've been quite protective about that," Wright said on the latest episode of Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast. "A long time ago, an American company wanted to do a TV series of 'Shaun of the Dead,' based on the film. We were like, 'No!'. Sometimes when these things come up, we take them very seriously. And some things are things we are still talking about."

Shaun of the Dead lead Simon Pegg has often been asked about a potential sequel to the 2004 release, and the actor typically tosses cold water on any such notion.

"If I ever do an Instagram Live or whatever, people are always like, 'I need Shaun of the Dead 2 in my life,'" Pegg recalled to The Guardian earlier this summer. "And I'm like, 'No, you don't f-cking need Shaun of the Dead 2! The last thing you need is Shaun of the Dead 2! It's done. Move on!'"

In a separate interview, Pegg revealed why he and Wright tend not to do sequels to their films.

"I'd love to play Gary King again from The World's End because I really, really loved playing that character," Pegg revealed to /Film last year. "Edgar and I tend not to dwell on the past. We don't do sequels to our movies because we just always want to keep things moving, do different things. And people always ask us about sequels, and we always say no. I think that will always be the case, but in an imaginary kind of scenario where we did do a sequel, I would definitely do a kind of post-apocalyptic World's End sequel with Gary off in the wilderness with his blank friends fighting."

Shaun of the Dead is now streaming on Hulu.

Original The Exorcist Star Addresses Her Cameo and Possible Franchise Return https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-exorcist-linda-blair-believer-deceiver-future-return-reaction/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 20:39:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 3a25c576-17b7-467c-8ca0-660ff3deb1ce

This year's The Exorcist: Believer largely focused on a new group of characters from the rest of the original franchise, though it did see Ellen Burstyn reprise her role of Chris MacNeil from the original 1973 film. Linda Blair also had a cameo in the film as Regan MacNeil, and while some fans might assume this was planting the seed for Regan to make a more substantial return to the franchise, Blair herself seemingly shot down that notion, as she recently explained how her priority is with her Worldheart Foundation and its commitment to animal welfare as opposed to acting gigs. The Exorcist: Deceiver currently has an April 18, 2025 release date.

"I don't know what they're gonna do. I really don't. And that's not a gag," Blair recently recalled to Screen Rant. "My history lies with the animals, so I have a lot of things, my dreams of what I want to do, which should never change, it's all animal-based. I had scripts at all the studios -- not all, but many studios -- a lot of good projects prior to buying this property. And what I found was I could not do film and run the foundation at the same time. It is very difficult to find people that really understand animal welfare, and can't get through the PTSD that is constant. This is a hard business, because it's actual life. So I kind of know that I want to continue this, I need to fix the problem, but I need the public to help. This must happen, it's become too political, and that's got to stop."

She continued, "So, while I fight this, I don't know what they're gonna do. I just know my time is not exactly available for film at the moment. And that's the honesty of it. If we fix this animal problem, I'll go back to work. But nobody seems to want to fix the animal problems, so I won't go back to work until this is fixed."

While Regan's cameo was kept under wraps in Believer, director David Gordon Green expressed how Blair served as a consultant on the film to aid the young actors who played the possessed characters. This meant that, from a scheduling perspective, Blair could more easily serve this role and film a brief cameo without compromising her commitments to the Worldheart Foundation, but to star in an entire sequel would understandably require more time from the figure.

The Exorcist: Deceiver currently has an April 18, 2025 release date, with another sequel set to be released after that.

Five Nights at Freddy's Is Blumhouse's Highest-Grossing Movie https://comicbook.com/movies/news/five-nights-at-freddys-box-office-blumhouse-highest-grossing-movie/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 18:30:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo b7f7e016-72b0-4ea3-ab5d-f10875c5501e

Five Nights at Freddy's spent five weeks at the box office -- and now it's Blumhouse's biggest movie ever. Jason Blum announced Monday that the video game adaptation surpassed M. Night Shyamalan's Split to become the studio's highest-grossing movie in its 23-year history. Despite its day-and-date release in theaters and on Peacock, the FNAF movie raked in $136.2 million domestically and $159.3 million internationally, bringing its global box office haul to $295.5 million. Freddy's opened at No. 1 on October 27 with a record-breaking $80 million domestically, giving it the biggest horror opening of 2023 and the second-best opening of all time for a video game movie (behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $146.3 million).

"FNAF is the BIGGEST @blumhouse film of ALL-TIME. Just passed SPLIT," Blum shared on X (formerly Twitter), adding thanks to director and co-writer Emma Tammi, co-writer Scott Cawthon, the movie's New Orleans crew, Universal Pictures, Peacock, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop, who created the animatronic figures of Freddy Fazbear and friends. Blum also extended appreciation to the cast, including Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Piper Rubio, and Elizabeth Lail.

Shyamalan's psychological thriller Split -- a "stealth sequel" to the Bruce Willis-starring Unbreakable -- previously held the record for the highest-grossing Blumhouse movie when it took in $278.5 million at the worldwide box office in 2017. The PG-13 FNAF also scored the best box office over Halloween weekend and the third-biggest horror opening of all time, behind only the two R-rated It movies.

Freddy's is just the sixth Blumhouse movie to surpass $200 million at the box office: 2011's Paranormal Activity 3 was the first to reach the milestone ($207m), followed by Glass ($246m), Jordan Peele's Get Out ($252m), the 2018 Halloween reboot/sequel ($255m), and Split ($278m).

On Halloween, Universal reported that Freddy's became the most-watched Peacock title (film or TV series) of all time in its first five days of release, besting Blumhouse's own Halloween Ends (day-and-date), The Super Mario Bros. Movie (streaming premiere), Bel-Air (TV premiere), and The Best Man: The Final Chapters (TV premiere). Those numbers suggest a Five Nights at Freddy's sequel is likely, with Tammi telling THR that the first movie has "some loose ends that I think are going to have to come back in a sequel to be tied up."

After five weeks in theaters, FNAF fell to ninth place following a slew of new November releases. Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes stayed on top with $28.8 million, besting Sony's historical epic Napoleon ($20.6m), Disney's animated Wish ($19.5m), Universal's animated musical Trolls Band Together ($17.5m), and Sony's R-rated horror-slasher Thanksgiving ($7m).

The film follows Mike (Hutcherson) a troubled young man caring for his 10-year-old sister Abby (Rubio), and haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother more than a decade before. Recently fired and desperate for work so that he can keep custody of Abby, Mike agrees to take a position as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant: Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. But Mike soon discovers that nothing at Freddy's is what it seems. With the aid of Vanessa, a local police officer (Lail), Mike's nights at Freddy's will lead him into unexplainable encounters with the supernatural and drag him into the black heart of an unspeakable nightmare.

Five Nights at Freddy's is streaming on Peacock.

Hocus Pocus 2 Star Has Uncertain Update on Returning for Next Sequel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/hocus-pocus-3-hannah-waddingham-return-reaction-explained-sequel-witch-mother/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 17:02:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 1817591b-79cf-47e0-8204-b4a5abc8c2b6

Last year's Hocus Pocus 2 brought back the iconic Sanderson sisters from the original Hocus Pocus, but also introduced audiences to the mysterious witch character played by Hannah Waddingham, and while a third film has been confirmed by Disney, Waddingham admits she hasn't heard any updates about her character returning. The actor did express her interest in reprising the role, though due to this year's writers' strike, any development on the third film was largely put on hold, but now that the strike has been resolved, it's possible that the script can be completed and Waddingham's role in the project could be solidified. Stay tuned for updates on Hocus Pocus 3.

When asked by The Hollywood Reporter about if she's heard about her role in the third film, Waddingham confessed, "No, hilariously. I love that there's been all this talk, and I'm here for it. But no, no. I mean, that would be amazing. I feel like I just barely, barely scratched the surface or put half an eyelash on for her. I feel like there is far more for the Mother Witch to cause magnificent mayhem. I would be so down for that. I mean, for one, Salvador Perez's costume needs another trot out for sure, and my cape that I wouldn't let them cut, definitely needs another swish. And she needs a song, P.S."

Waddingham's character could prove to be a pivotal figure in the franchise's mythology, as it was her encounter with the young Sanderson sisters that sent them down a nefarious path, with the final scene of the film teasing that the character could make a comeback.

Writer of Hocus Pocus 2 and the upcoming third film Jen D'Angelo previously teased plans to spend more time with this Mother Witch.

"We're still in the story phase, we're still working on it. We've been working on some ideas, and it's been fun to dive back into that world and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore," D'Angelo confirmed to Entertainment Weekly last month. "We've only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham's mother witch."

Stay tuned for updates on Hocus Pocus 3.

Resident Evil Report Sheds Light on Release Date of Next Game https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/resident-evil-9-code-veronica-remake-2024-report/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 14:41:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 2639471e-2d2c-4009-9ffd-b91a9bcaff1a

Following Resident Evil 4 Remake, many Resident Evil fans are wondering what's next, turning their eyes to not just more remakes -- eyeing up Resident Evil - Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 5 -- but also to Resident Evil 9, or whatever the next mainline installment in the series ends up being called. Unfortunately, fans of the survival-horror Capcom series won't be seeing what's next year, or at least they won't be playing what's next in 2024.

According to Dusk Golem -- a well-known source when it comes to Capcom -- the Japanese games maker has a "big game" that will be announced before the end of the year and released in 2024, but it's not a new Resident Evil game. Adding to this, the insider claims there also won't be any remakes releasing next year. In other words, it is going to be a quiet year for Resident Evil fans.

As alluded to, this doesn't meant something won't be revealed for Resident Evil in 2024, it just means nothing will be released, or at least nothing of supreme consequence. That said, take this information with a grain of salt, as while the source has proven reliable in the past, they have also been off the mark in the past as well, raising questions about future information from the individual. Whatever the case, if Resident Evil doesn't rear its head in 2024 that probably just means it will do so in a major way in 2025.

At the moment of publishing, this new report has not drawn any type of comment from Capcom. We don't expect this to change for a variety of reasons, and if a comment is forthcoming, it will likely be nothing more than "no comment." That said, we will be sure to monitor the situation for any more developments and update the story accordingly. In the meantime, and as always, feel free to leave a comment or two letting us know what you think. What would you like to see next from Capcom in regards to the Resident Evil series: another remake or a new installment. If the former, which remake would you like to see?

Beetlejuice 2: Willem Dafoe Reveals Details About His Character https://comicbook.com/horror/news/beetlejuice-2-willem-dafoe-reveals-details-about-his-character/ Sun, 26 Nov 2023 15:49:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak d174ec84-67b7-4da4-8c0c-7db4d23f47b9

Beetlejuice 2 is one of the many films that recently resumed production now that the WGA and SAG strikes are officially over. Director Tim Burton is returning for the sequel with Michael Keaton back as the titular character alongside Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz. New additions to the story include Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci. While attending the Marrakech Film Festival, Dafoe spoke to Variety and shared some information about his new Beetlejuice character.

"I haven't seen any footage yet, but it was fun to do," Dafoe teased. "I play a police officer in the afterlife, so I'm a dead person. And in life, I was a B-movie action star, but I had an accident and that's what sent me to the other side. But because of my skills, I became a detective character in the afterlife. So that's my job. But it's colored by the fact of who I was [when I was alive]: a B movie action star."

Michael Keaton and Tim Burton on Returning To Beetlejuice:

"Beetlejuice is the most f*ckin' fun you can have working," Keaton previously shared with Empire. "It's so fun, it's so great. And you know what it is? We're doing it exactly like we did the first movie ... There's a woman in the great waiting room for the afterlife literally with a fishing line - I want people to know this because I love it - tugging on the tail of a cat to make it move."

Keaton added, "[Burton] and I were talking about it years and years ago, never telling anybody. I said, 'If it happens, first of all, we've both said we're doing it many times. We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time. Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something. F*ckin' great. It's the most fun I've had working on a movie in I can't tell you how long."

"Honestly, I don't really know, because I am really not that good at talking or speaking or trying to sell something, so to speak. Looking back, it's a very, very strange journey that I can't quite explain," Burton told the Independent when asked about thriving in Hollywood. "That's why it is hard for me to watch the movies afterwards, because I still feel the emotional whatever of it. I don't get a release from that. But I do enjoy all the people I've worked with. On this last one, Beetlejuice 2, I really enjoyed it. I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets. It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies."

Beetlejuice 2 is currently scheduled to debut in theaters on September 6, 2024.

Nosferatu Image Offers First Look at Nicholas Hoult https://comicbook.com/horror/news/nosferatu-reboot-first-look-photo-nicholas-hoult/ Sat, 25 Nov 2023 18:14:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 64dede6c-a0b5-4a72-9292-922b44de3974

Earlier this week, a first look at Robert Eggers' revival of the 1922 silent film Nosferatu arrived, giving a haunting glimpse at Lily-Rose Depp as well as a shadowy tease of the titular character Count Orlok's ominous and shadowy claw, but now we're getting an even better look at the film with another image. A new photo in the print edition of Empire Magazine (via Bloody Disgusting) gives a first look at Nicholas Hoult's character -- as well as another glimpse at Bill Skarsg?rd's Count Orlok. In the image, which you can check out for yourself below, features an out of focus Count Orlok in the foreground while a wary Hoult observes him from behind.

What Is Nosferatu About?

As was noted above, Nosferatu is a new version of the classic silent film and it's one that Eggers has been working on for a long time, even though it has had numerous setbacks. According to Eggers, while the film is a scary horror film, it's also an old-school Gothic film as well.

"It's a scary film. It's a horror movie. It's a Gothic horror movie," Eggers shared with the outlet. "And I do think that there hasn't been an old-school Gothic movie that's actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case."

He added, "It's even more Ellen's story than previous versions ... And Lily-Rose is absolutely phenomenal."

Nosferatu is described as being "a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Lily Rose-Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Bill Skarsg?rd) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him."

The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hoult, Willem Dafo, Emma Corrin, Simon McBurney, and Ralph Ineson.

Hoult Has Previously Called The Nosferatu Reboot "Really Special"

"Rob [Eggers] has wanted to make Nosferatu since he was eight years old and he did a play of it as well when he was in high school, so it's been a passion project of his for a long time," Hoult revealed to the Inside Total Film podcast. "Honestly, I wasn't looking to go back into the vampire world again, but his style and tone are just so completely the opposite of (Renfield), and I'm such a fan of his work that I'm excited to be in his world and watching him and learning from him. I think the film could be really special, so I'm excited for people to see it."

Nosferatu will hit theaters in 2024.

Chucky Season 3 Resumes Filming https://comicbook.com/horror/news/chucky-season-3-filming-strike-over/ Sat, 25 Nov 2023 01:04:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 02078d72-5b30-4d40-9ca5-71b3a5a1929d

Chucky has resumed production on the remaining episodes of season 3. Series creator Don Mancini took to social media to reveal that Chucky season 3 has gotten back in front of cameras and has picked up where they left off. Mancini revealed the news on X, formerly Twitter, sharing a set photo of him with the young stars of the series. "BACK AT IT #CHUCKY," wrote Mancini in the post, which you can see below. The first four episodes of Chucky season 3 aired on USA Network and SYFY back in October, with a teaser premiering for the remaining four episodes of the season.

Speaking in a previous interview with ComicBook.com, Mancini revealed that the decision to split Chucky season 3 was a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike shutting down production before they could finish all eight episodes. The Chucky creator confirmed that before they had to stop the series they filmed most of episode 3.05 and some of episode 3.06, but would need to finish both of those episodes and film the final two of Chucky season 3 before the season would be totally completed.

"Once we saw that the strike was coming, we sort of like put all of our resources and time into finishing the first four," Mancini confirmed. "We really have almost finished five and six as well. But we like literally just like a day left to finish five and six. And then a few more weeks to do seven and eight. But we do have pieces of seven and eight already shot as well. So, when (the strike) happened, Universal said 'Okay, well, this is what we can do.' And fortuitously enough, the end of episode 4 really did lend itself (to a hiatus), and that was just coincidence, because that was always what was going to happen at the end of episode 4. And we knew that since that was the Halloween episode, as we do every year, we try to make the Halloween episode a little bit special. So it functions as a good cliffhanger because no one has ever seen Chucky in this with this particular dilemma before."

Where is Chucky streaming?

The first two seasons of Chucky are available for streaming on two different platforms, both Peacock and Shudder. All sixteen episodes of the series, including both seasons 1 and 2, can be streamed on each of these services. Unlike previous seasons of Chucky however, wherein the entire season would have to premiere on cable before it began streaming, the new episodes of Chucky season 3 will be available for streaming the next day. After Chucky season 3's episodes air on SYFY and USA Network on Wednesdays, they'll be available to stream the very next day on Peacock.

When does the next episode of Chucky come out?

There is no official word on when the next four episodes of Chucky season 3 will be released, and as we know production was nearly finished on episodes 5 & 6. As a result, only once the SAG-AFTRA strike has concluded can production resume on Chucky, with filming then set to begin on the final episodes. The wait for Chucky season 3 episodes will continue even after that point though as post-production will need to take place for the episodes before they can air.

McG Confirms The Babysitter 3 Is Still in the Works (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/mcg-confirms-the-babysitter-3-is-still-in-the-works-exclusive/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 16:16:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 406e2097-a142-4464-9d1b-0aae495e7687

McG, whose The Babysitter became an unexpected hit for Netflix and spawned a sequel, says that producers have still not given up on the idea of a third installment in the horror franchise. The first two movies have each included lead actors who went on to become huge stars, with The Babysitter featuring Samara Weaving before she did Ready or Not and The Babysitter: Killer Queen starring a pre-Wednesday Jenna Ortega. McG, who directed the first two movies, would presumably helm a third as well, although he also has a history of stepping into a producorial role and letting other people direct.

Either way, it sounds like a threequel is still in development, but there's nothing too solid yet. His hope is that, if a sequel happens, they can cast someone else in it who will blow the fans away.

"Yeah, we're still talking about it," McG told ComicBook.com. "It was fun. The first movie, obviously, gave Samara Weaving to the world, and the second movie was Jenna Ortega. Hopefully we can answer the call and find a third star that reaches those lofty heights."

McG was speaking with ComicBook in support of his latest film, Family Switch.

In Family Switch, when a family switches bodies with each other during a rare planetary alignment, their hilarious journey to find their way back to normal will bring them closer together than they ever thought possible. The film also stars Brady Noon, Rita Moreno, Matthias Schweigh?fer, Bashir Salahuddin, Fortune Feimster, Xosha Roquemore, Paul Scheer, and Pete Holmes.

"[The movie comes at a] moment in the world where we could certainly use a dose of that," McG said of the film. "We hope that it's surprising and light and more intelligent than you might think. I mean, my favorite way to make movies is to synthesize highbrow and lowbrow, where a kid could watch it and understand what's going on, but a parent could watch it and ingest the material on a totally different, more sophisticated level, which is something I think Pixar does better than anybody, and I aspire to do that."

Family Switch will arrive exclusively on Netflix on November 30th.

Reckless Ben, One of McKamey Manor's Biggest Critics, is Holding His Own Haunted House Event https://comicbook.com/irl/news/reckless-ben-one-of-mckamey-manors-biggest-critics-is-holding-his-own-haunted-house-event/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 14:03:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 3119c635-eeae-4a2d-af88-713b8d007540

Ahead of the wrap party for his multi-part expose on McKamey Manor, YouTuber Reckless Ben announced last night that he plans to hold a one-night haunt called Ben's Basement for fans and supporters. He's asking ten people to come compete for a "big prize" -- they're hoping to match the $20,000 that McKamey Manor offers -- and inviting many more people to come to an afterparty where they can try out the haunt's stunts, and party with Reckless Ben and his crew. The idea, he says, is to actually offer some of the scares that McKamey Manor claims it has in store.

The ten contestants will be determined by Schneider and his team, based on two-minute video entries that fans can submit starting last night. There are only three days to sign up, and the event takes place on December 9.

Reckless Ben, real name Ben Schneider, calls himself a "professional infiltrator," and before his McKamey Manor series, he had made videos in which he infiltrated a cult, a restaurant owned by a hate group, and more. During his McKamey manor videos, he has visited the fabled haunt, and came away with the conclusion that there isn't really anything to see.

"I feel like it's the biggest middle finger to McKamey Manor if we just do everything that they're claiming to be," Schneider says in the video.

You can see his announcement below.

Russ McKamey, who owns the property on which McKamey Manor is located, has claimed there are thousands of people on his waiting list, that he has hundreds of rats and a two-mile-long zipline. But when Schneider and a number of his collaborators applied to go to the haunted house, they all apparently skipped the line, because they were accepted almost immediately. Once there, they underwent some physical challenges and were berated and humiliated by McKamey...but nobody reached the haunted house itself. Not necessarily because they tapped out, though; in one case, McKamey claimed his camera ran out of batteries, and in another case, he threw someone out for asking too many questions.

Schneider used a number of creative tricks to take the wind out of McKamey's sails, including altering the contract McKamey makes contestants sign to allow him to share his footage online. He also started an LLC called McKamey Manor after a representative for McKamey manor threatened legal action against Schneider for using the company's name in his videos. One of Schneider's videos has been taken down by YouTube, apparently because McKamey reported it for revealing the location of McKamey's home (where the Manor is).

Reckless Ben's series on McKamey would give viewers a pretty clear opinion of the Manor: there's almost nothing there, certainly nothing remotely like what is being advertised, and it seems to exist primarily so that Russ McKamey can subject people to degrading and painful experiences without consequences.

Schneider invites McKamey to Ben's Basement in the video, telling his audience to leave the man alone if he shows up to have fun at the event. He doesn't expect his nemesis to actually attend the party, though.

The video claims that the filmmakers behind Hulu's Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House have already done a walkthrough of Ben's Basement, as well as "The Wolf," one of McKamey Manor's most vocal online critics.

Recently, the Tennessee attorney general announced that they were investigating claims of abuse by McKamey -- charges that have come to light following the Hulu documentary and Reckless Ben's videos, both of which encouraged people to come forward in spite of their fears that McKamey would retaliate against them legally.

Tim Burton's Comments on Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel Will Upset Fans https://comicbook.com/horror/news/nightmare-before-christmas-sequel-never-happening-tim-burton-says/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 04:58:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 09da3524-bb91-41ec-a15b-adb687d5b80a

Hopefully you're not holding your breath waiting in anticipation for a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas. One of the most iconic pieces of holiday pop culture, many have thought the movie might be a perfect candidate for a revival decades after it was first released; after all, Disney has been busy making sequels and follow-ups to projects like Hocus Pocus and The Mighty Ducks. If Tim Burton gets his way, however, the Nightmare franchise will never be touched again.

"I've done sequels, I've done other things, I've done reboots, I've done all that shit, right? I don't want that to happen to this. It's nice that people are maybe interested [in another one], but I'm not," Burton said in a recent chat with Empire.

He added, "I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won't sell to the big power plant that wants to take my land."

Composer Danny Elfman, the singing voice of Jack Skellington and the maestro behind the film's score, shared a similar sentiment when we spoke with him last year.

"I don't think so," Elfman told ComicBook.com about a Nightmare follow-up. "I think Tim has always felt that no, this is what it was."

"But you know, it wouldn't totally shock me if he came back with... If he had a fresh take on it, I would certainly go for the ride with him," the composer continued. "But he's never expressed any interest in that. I think he felt like this was a pure thing and it was what it was and that to try to do sequels on it would, I think it's just not inspired him. But I won't ever speak for Tim. It's his universe."

Though both Burton and Elfman seem cold on the idea of a sequel, director Henry Selick says a potential prequel or origin could fly. "It might be more interesting to do a prequel," the director admitted last month. "There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloweentown."

The Nightmare Before Christmas is now streaming on Disney+.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre Reveals Another Big Leatherface Change https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/texas-chain-saw-massacre-nicotero-leatherface-change/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 03:59:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 489cfd4f-09b1-4547-8f21-fb37c22809ac

Some big changes are coming to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre this month, many of which will be related to Leatherface. Earlier this month, Gun Media revealed that the killer will no longer be required for matches, allowing players to have greater freedom to choose between playable characters. Gun Media announced another change coming for the character, and this one relates to the Nicotero Leatherface design that arrived in the game last month. That design was accompanied by a unique chainsaw, and soon players that purchased the skin will be able to use that chainsaw with any Leatherface skin.

"After the last live stream that Matt and I did, we heard the feedback on saw swapping. Matt spoke to Wes, Wes spoke to Ronnie, and the decision was made to bring the Nicotero saw skin to other Leatherface variants, if you own the Nicotero Premium Outfit," Gun Media's community manager wrote on the game's subreddit.

So far, fans seem pretty happy about this change! The Nicotero Leatherface chainsaw not only has a unique design, it also has a different sound. A lot of fans preferred the saw, but also liked the original design for the killer. Now players will have the option of switching back and forth, offering a bit more customization freedom. At this time, no date has been announced for this change, but hopefully it will arrive in the game soon.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre's Next Update

Since the game's developers have not committed to a date for the swappable chainsaws, it's a safe bet that the new Leatherface option will not arrive in time for the game's next update. On November 28th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will be getting a mix of free and paid content. All players will get access to a new map (Nancy's House), as well as a number of different bug fixes. The game will also add two new paid characters: Nancy (a new killer) and Danny (a new victim). These two characters will be available in the game for $9.99 each.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre Black Friday Deals

For those that haven't played The Texas Chain Saw Massacre yet, this week should offer the perfect opportunity. A 20% off sale started a few days ago on the PlayStation Store, bringing the game down to $31.99 from its normal $39.99. PC gamers can actually get the game a little bit cheaper by buying it on Steam, where the game is 25% off, bringing it down to $29.99. Both of these sales will be ending on November 28th. That leaves the Microsoft Store as the only platform not offering a discount on the game, but access to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is included with an Xbox Game Pass subscription.

Are you excited for this change to Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre? Did you purchase the Nicotero Leatherface design last month? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

Scream 7 Reportedly Targeting Neve Campbell, Patrick Dempsey https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-7-reportedly-targeting-neve-campbell-patrick-dempsey/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 01:52:00 +0000 Spencer Perry e9468d28-8cbf-4f46-b44f-ddb082f818a5

Scream 7 has been in the headlines more this week than at any other point of its development cycle. Yesterday brought word that series star Melissa Barrera had been fired by Spyglass, following recent statements about the conflict between Israel and Palestine which the production company considered antisemitic in nature. Less than a day later it was confirmed that Jenna Ortega, who played Barrera's on-screen sister and has become a household name thanks to Netflix's Wednesday, would also not be returning for the next sequel. With the new Scream movies without their two biggest stars in the front, something new is being considered for the sequel, with a trip back to the well seemingly in the cards.

According to a report from Variety, Scream 7 is essentially starting with a brand new draft of its screenplay which will be replacing its lead protagonists. Though Barrera and Ortega only had a two-picture deal for the series, completing it with Scream VI, producers were planning for them to anchor the new movie. Now that neither of them will appear though, the trade reports that Scream's producers are looking for franchise staples to return.

The trade notes that both Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, original stars that have appeared in nearly every movie, could be targets and are on a "wish list" to appear in the new movie. Campbell notably did not appear in Scream VI following a salary dispute. As the outlet reveals, the producers of the series are "keen to see her reclaim her iconic character."

Another character reportedly on the wish list to star in Scream 7 is none other than Patrick Dempsey. Just voted the Sexiest Man Alive, and having just starred in the Scream-like slasher Thanksgiving, Dempsey first appeared in 2000's Scream 3 as Detective Mark Kincaid. Though he only had the one appearance in the Scream series it has since been established that Dempsey's Kincaid and Campbell's Sydney Prescott are married and have a family together.

Despite appearances in the first five movies of the series, Neve Campbell opted not to return for Scream VI after a dispute over her salary forced her to walk away from the sequel. The actress was previously very open about the fact that she wouldn't be returning despite becoming the face of the franchise. At a convention earlier this month Campbell actually addressed the movie for the first time publicly after finally watching it.

"I watched it until two weeks ago. It took me a minute, I don't know why," Campbell said during a spotlight panel at Monster-Mania Con this month. "I actually thought they did a really good job. I think the cast are really powerful, wonderful actors...I don't wish these movies ill will. I wanted the movie to be good. It's not like I'm sitting in my house going, 'I hope it sucks, I hope it doesn't do well.' I care about all the people involved. There's someone at the top who only thinks about money and that's their prerogative."

According to Variety's report on these major Scream 7 rewrites, it's possible that set pieces and twists that were written for the movie will still make it into the draft, but the lead characters are where new decisions will need to be made. Scribes James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will be working on the new draft of the script, but none of the three stars reportedly on the Scream 7 "wish list" have been in any kind of negotiations for a return. No official release date has been set for Scream 7, but Happy Death Day's Christopher Landon has been hired to direct the project.

Scream's Melissa Barrera Breaks Silence on Franchise Firing https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-melissa-barrera-breaks-silence-scream-7-firing/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 00:43:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 81335578-565a-4c7a-8fbc-d71d23e9ddd8

Nearly 24 hours after Melissa Barrera was dropped from Scream VII after controversial social media posts, the actor has issued her first comments on the firing. In a statement shared to her Instagram Stories on Wednesday evening, Barrera says she "condemns Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia and hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people."

"As a latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need," the actor wrote in her post.

She added, "Every person on this earth- regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status- deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom."

The Scream V and Scream VI star went on to clarify her original comments, which reportedly landed her in hot water for taking an anti-Semitic stance.

"I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism," she added. "I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me."

Barrera initially slammed the media for what she calls a pro-Israel stance in its ongoing war with Hamas.

"I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side for the last 2 weeks or so, following accounts etc. Why? Because western media only shows the other side," Barrera said in October posts. "Why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself. Usually the algorithm on social media gets the gist. Well... My discover page on IG will ONLY show me videos showing and talking about the Israeli side. Censorship is very real. Palestinians know this, they know the world has been trying to make them invisible for decades. Keep sharing."

Scream V and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream VII is in development and has yet to set a release date.

Jenna Ortega Drops Out of Scream 7 Due to Wednesday Shooting Schedule https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jenna-ortega-drops-out-of-scream-7-due-to-wednesday-shooting-schedule/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 18:23:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 63628fd7-7f6b-44b4-8582-2d4694282958

Jenna Ortega will reportedly not return for the next Scream movie, due to scheduling conflicts with the second season of Wednesday. The star is not expected to return for the seventh installment in the long-running horror franchise, which could be a real blow to the movie. While the sixth Scream opened to a massive $67 million globally last year, it was also the first movie without Neve Campbell, who could not come to a deal with producers. Now, not only is Ortega going to be absent, but just yesterday, Melissa Barrera (who played Ortega's sister) was fired from the film.

That suggests that the next installment will have to be something special to overcome the sense that the franchise is losing its direction. After decades of following the same handful of characters, this revival can't make it three movies before two of its most popular characters are out the door.

Barrera was reportedly fired yesterday after Redditors dug up a number of social media posts she made on her Instagram story during October, supporting Palestine in their ongoing war with Israel. She reposted and commented on a number of stories, and called the attacks on Palestinian civilians "genocide." Support for Palestine has become a lightning rod in recent weeks, with Oscar-winning Blue Beetle star Susan Sarandon being dropped by her management at United Talent Agency for comments opposed to Israel.

"This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make," Scream VII director Christopher Landon wrote in a now-deleted post on social media, along with a broken heart emoji.

Scream V and Scream VI revitalized the franchise like few other franchise reboots could. Scream 6 ended up being a franchise record-setter, earning more domestically in the US and Canada than any other installment, and hitting overall numbers ($169 million worldwide on a $30 million budget) not seen since Scream 2 and the franchise's best heyday. Barrera had solidified her character Sam Carpenter (daughter of original Ghostface killer, Billy Loomis) as a scream-queen icon, right up there alongside Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. That said, Scream VI also elevated Sam's half-sister Tara to main character/scream queen status, as well; Tara is played by Netflix's Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, who has inarguably become a much bigger mainstream star than Barrera. Scream 7 has all the runway needed to kill Sam offscreen or send her away (for a possible return later), while Tara (Ortega) leads the next installment of the franchise.

Scream (that's the fifth one!) and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream VII is in development.

Somna #1 Review: A Potent Dream of Shadows, Fear, and Lust https://comicbook.com/comics/news/somna-1-review-dstlry-becky-cloonan-tula-lotay/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 15:00:00 +0000 Chase Magnett efeae582-6cf6-4f98-b558-98769eee341d Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay are two names that carry a lot of weight with comics critics - outstanding artists producing ambitious projects and attached to some of the most invigorating events and publishers in the industry. So it's no surprise that when they collaborate to create the new series Somna, it's a success, but reputation alone can't speak to exactly how successful the new series from upstart DSTLRY is in reading. The miniseries' debut this week showcases two resplendent styles intricately woven together to immerse readers in a setting and headspace they won't want to leave, even as it grows ever more disquieting.

Somna #1 introduces readers to life in a small unnamed village set amidst England in the early 17th century as witch hunts terrorize the countryside. Ingrid is married to the local bailiff and witchfinder Roland, who ignores her in favor of his official duties, even as she is plagued by increasingly frightening dreams. The entire affair--weaving together historical fiction, eroticism, and the supernatural--is presented in a pristinely prepared package in which every page, title, and effect is considered, much like Cloonan's exquisite By Chance or By Providence.

Cloonan and Lotay divide artistic duties between Ingrid's waking and unconscious hours. The issue opens on a dream sequence in which Ingrid captures fragments of imagery before settling her gaze upon a dark figure with lustful intents. Lotay's style matches this dreamscape splendidly and offers readers insights into the manner in which Ingrid dreams. Soft figures and blurring lines portray a sense of unreality without ever losing clarity; fragments from a possible drowning on the first page are all the more effective because the details are distinguishable. But overlapping and non-typical layouts combine with a regularly changing point of view to differentiate this space from the harsh realities of life in the late Elizabethan era.

This contrasts splendidly against Cloonan's portrayal of the waking world. Sharp lines, rich inking, and solid grids ground every moment spent in Ingrid's village with the dull realities of peasant life lacking the blurred effects of tantalizing dark dreams. Whereas Lotay's work portrays Ingrid's inner desires and emotional complexity, Cloonan's figures provide emotions on their faces and frames with unerring accuracy. Ingrid's yearning for her husband and his cold rejection provides a rich subtext suggesting deeper motives within both of them.

Even as the narrative relies more upon these waking sequences to dispatch with dialogue and exposition, Cloonan utilizes dense grids filled with details to compress information and make each new panel a rewarding reading experience. It's this density that makes Somna #1 read as a much more satisfying installment than most serialized comics. By the issue's end there are a clearly defined set of characters with complex motivations and relationships in a fully realized setting. Adding the supernatural intrigues offered at night atop all of this produces a first issue that's as satisfying as the best pilots on television.

There will doubtless be a space (and need) to discuss the marital intrigues, erotic temptations, and gendered power dynamics of Somna; the first issue alone is rich with thematic subtext drawing readers into a setting far beyond but undeniably connected to their own. But the wonder of Somna #1 lies in how that place, its people, and the story they have to tell are introduced. Meeting Sigurd's friends and her husband's victims in the village while lapsing into her dark dreams at night offers both aesthetic and literary pleasures that are best found on the page. What's undeniable is the talent and ambition on display in this first issue making Somna a series all keen-eyed comics readers will want to seek out.

Neve Campbell Reveals Her Thoughts on Scream 6 After Watching It for the First TIme https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-7-never-campbell-wishes-no-ill-will-new-movies/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 01:01:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 31b99388-06c6-4e2a-bfd5-c23ba0b9c649

Despite being the protagonist through the Scream franchise's first four films, Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott was reduced to a large cameo role in Scream V before being removed from the call sheet with Scream VI. As it stands now, it seems as if Campbell will also not appear in Scream VII. Even then, the actor says she harbors no "ill will" toward the films in the franchise she doesn't appear in.

"I watched it until two weeks ago. It took me a minute, I don't know why," Campbell said during a spotlight panel at Monster-Mania Con this month (via Deadline). "I actually thought they did a really good job. I think the cast are really powerful, wonderful actors."

She added, "I don't wish these movies ill will. I wanted the movie to be good. It's not like I'm sitting in my house going, 'I hope it sucks, I hope it doesn't do well.' I care about all the people involved. There's someone at the top who only thinks about money and that's their prerogative."

Talks about Campbell's return in Scream VI broke down after the actor claimed the studio wasn't paying her the rightful wage.

"I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to this franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years," Campbell told PEOPLE Magazine last fall. "And as a woman in this business, I think it's really important for us to be valued and to fight to be valued."

She added, "I honestly don't believe that if I were a man and had done five installments of a huge blockbuster franchise over 25 years, that the number that I was offered would be the number that would be offered to a man. And in my soul, I just couldn't do that. I couldn't walk on set feeling that -- feeling undervalued and feeling the unfairness, or lack of fairness, around that."

Though she's not currently attached to Scream VII, studio executives may be looking to make a change after Melissa Barrera was fired from the project on Tuesday due to controversial comments made on social media.

Scream V and Scream VI are streaming on Paramount+. Scream VII is in development and has yet to set a release date.

Scream Movies Star Melissa Barrera Reportedly Dropped From Scream 7 https://comicbook.com/horror/news/scream-7-melissa-barrera-dropped-exit-israel-palestine-comments/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 21:52:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw fbb2b198-41a8-4eb7-81bc-f7d088f8d12e

Melissa Barrera - the actress best known as the face of the new Scream movie franchise - has reportedly been dropped from Scream 7, which is already in development. Word of Barrera Scream VII exit started to float around the Internet today; however, the reports are stating that she was actually let go from the franchise a while back and that the news is just now coming to light.

Word is that Melissa Barrera sparked controversy (and eventually backlash) with a series of Instagram stories she posted back in October 2023, commenting on the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The Islamist militant group Hamas launched a coordinated massacre of Israeli citizens on October 7, 20230, sparking a fierce conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip region and sparking an even larger debate/argument across the world. Average citizens, celebrities, and world figures alike all got in on the discussion, and inevitably careers and lives were affected by some of the heated exchanges and/or posts that happened afterward.

(Photo: PARAMOUNT)

A Reddit post captured some of what Melissa Barrera had to say in her IG stories - including one post of both the Palestinian flag and the flag of our native country, Mexico, with the attached caption "I too come from a colonized country" / "Palestine WILL be free" while quoting a famous line from Greek poet Dinos Christianopoulos: "they tried to bury us, they didn't know we were seeds".

In a longer and far more direct post, Barrera wrote "I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side for the last 2 weeks or so, following accounts etc. Why? Because western media only shows the other side. Why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself. Usually the algorithm on social media gets the gist. Well... My discover page on IG will ONLY show me videos showing and talking about the Israeli side. Censorship is very real. Palestinians know this, they know the world has been trying to make them invisible for decades. Keep sharing."

Another post showed a video reel of the Palestinian protest marches that occurred in the days and weeks following Israel's counterattacks. The response by Israel against Gaza, in lieu of what Hamas did, has angered various Islamic peoples and those championing the plight of innocent civilians being caught up in and killed by the escalating level of crossfire and deadly ordnance strikes (missiles) in the region. Melissa Barrera is far from the only celebrity to take issue with Isareal's tactics - but it wouldn't be that shocking to learn that the studio and executives behind Scream took issue with Barrera sharing offensive and/or discriminatory conspiracy notions like Western media being controlled and orchestrated. The "why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself..." line definitely sounds like it ventures into some dark territory...

Netflix Renews Black Mirror For Season 7 https://comicbook.com/horror/news/netflix-black-mirror-season-7-renew/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 17:56:00 +0000 Aaron Perine adea0691-4264-4c92-9ae7-135d12fcb71b

Black Mirror is coming back to Netflix for Season 7. Variety reports that the streaming favorite is a go for production to continue in late 2023. Series executive producers Annabel Jones and Jessica Rhoads are supposed to be returning for the next season. Black Mirror Season 7 has a pretty wild act to follow. Season 6 saw the series hit the Top 10 in over 92 countries and enjoyed success in most English-speaking countries. Black Mirror had some record-setting performance and Netflix is hoping for the same with the upcoming season. Series creator Charlie Brooker talked to TUDUM about trying to keep the series fresh as it ages earlier this year. It's been a challenge, but the crew has risen to the occasion.

"Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect," Brooker said. "Consequently, this time, alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes we've also got a few new elements, including some I've previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what 'a Black Mirror episode' even is. The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror through-and-through -- but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before."

How Has Black Mirror Done With Netflix?

There have been various moments of critique for Black Mirror during this run on Netflix. A lot of fans think that being included on the streaming platform has been a net negative for Charlie Brooker's show. But, in an interview with The Guardian, he met those comments head-on. The creative explained how having differing perspectives has helped Black Mirror. Some may have preferred the British version, but Brooker thinks there's room for different types of stories.

"One of the criticisms we sometimes get is, 'I prefer the show when it was British and everyone in it was miserable and everything smelled a little bit of sh-t and all the stories were horrible,'" Brooker told the outlet during a recent event. "'And then it's gone to Netflix and suddenly everything's sunny and happy and everyone has wonderful teeth, and it's full of Hollywood stars and it's lost that edge.'"

The creator added, "I was aware we're going to be on a global platform now, so we've got to make these stories a bit more international. And I wanted to mix it up a bit, as in not just keep doing bleak-a-thons."

What's Different In Black Mirror Season 6?

Netflix describes the most recent season of Black Mirror: "The show looks inwards, at the darker aspects of humanity and society. This is done through the theme of technology, hence the second meaning. The black mirror is the screen that rules our lives. Taking contemporary phenomena (ranging from the wild popularity of talent shows on TV to the impact of social media and smartphones on our lives) as a starting point and speculate how such phenomena could/would evolve in the future. Each episode tells a different story with different protagonists and focuses on a different theme."

Black Mirror Season 6 is currently streaming on Netflix.
