GTA 6 Trailer Spoofs Miami's Own "Real Life Joker" https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/gta-6-trailer-vice-city-miami-joker/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 00:47:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 52c37f20-5d74-4101-8031-6739ca2e3888

The GTA 6 trailer has been released a day early by Rockstar Games after a leaked version of the trailer surfaced online. We also have a 2025 release date for the game. And that's about all we have at the moment. Rockstar Games has not revealed any game details, leaving fans no choice but to dissect the trailer for information. And that's exactly what fans have been doing. The most obvious details that can be garnered from the trailer are the game's Vice City setting and the dual protagonists, one of which is male and one of which is female, named Jason and Lucia, respectively. There's a lot more hidden inside than just these major details though.

While some fans are blown away by the graphics of the trailer and are too busy to notice the finer details, others have been able to look past the next-gen graphics and notice a variety of different details. To this end, there seems to be a callback to a 2017/2018 story of a real-life joker in Florida. For those unfamiliar with this story, back in 2017 Lawrence Sullivan was arrested, and then again in 2018. His crimes were nothing noteworthy, but he caught national attention because of his resemblance to Joker.

Obviously, the character in the trailer is not a one-for-one of Sullivan, and there's no way to guarantee it was the intent of Rockstar Games, but that's how the Internet has taken the character. And considering where the game is set, and the fact the character is on the news for being arrested in the trailer, it seems pretty obvious that it's referencing Sullivan, but again, we can't know for sure.

What's also unclear is whether this is simply a callback for the purpose of the trailer or an actual character in the game. Knowing Rockstar Games, and considering the nature of the trailer, it's the former, but again it's possible this is a character in the game as Rockstar clearly went through the trouble of doing motion capture for the character and designing him.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to release worldwide sometime in 2025 via the PS5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. For more coverage on the highly-anticipated game, click here.

Zack Snyder Breaks Silence on Barbie's Snyder Cut Joke https://comicbook.com/movies/news/zack-snyder-breaks-silence-barbie-snyder-cut-joke/ Mon, 04 Dec 2023 23:32:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 272cfbc7-0282-47b4-b889-dfe42ad41c54

There was a lot to talk about with regards to Greta Gerwig's Barbie, from its star-studded ensemble cast to its costuming to its box office impact. One of the smaller, buzzed-about elements of the movie was its pop culture Easter eggs -- including a reference to the 2021 HBO Max film Zack Snyder's Justice League. Midway through Barbie, Writer Barbie (Alexandra Shipp) admits she felt like she was "very invested" in Zack Snyder's Justice League while brainwashed by the hyper-masculine Kens of Barbieland. Given how notorious the "Snyder Cut" has become online over the years, the film's reference caught a lot of attention -- and apparently, even Snyder himself is fond of it.

"I thought [Barbie] was great," Snyder explained in a recent interview with Men's Health. "And I think the joke is pretty good... The thing that I said to [my wife, Deborah Snyder] is - the thing that you need to take a second and think about is that your name is so seamlessly sewed together with a pop culture phenomenon so big it can exist as a joke in a movie about Barbie. That's pretty insane. You just need to step back for a second and go like, 'Whoa, what did we do? What happened? How is that a thing?'"

Why Did Barbie Reference the Snyder Cut?

As director and co-writer Greta Gerwig explained to ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview, the reference to Zack Snyder's Justice League in Barbie felt like a natural thing to include in the finished film.

"Because I don't have a dog in this fight, I didn't even really know, I knew it was a thing," Gerwig explained. "I don't know the contours of all the ins and outs. But it's the kind of thing that I vaguely know. But I think that was the thing, that it was like if [Writer Barbie] had a vague knowledge of, and then all of a sudden in a certain state, it really meant a lot to her, and then it went away."

Did Barbie Reference Blade Runner?

According to Gerwig, before the Snyder Cut reference made its way into Barbie, there was actually a line referencing 1982's Blade Runner, and the infamous debate over its voiceover element. There were very brief plans to include Blade Runner director Ridley Scott in Barbie in a cameo appearance, but it did not pan out.

"One of the Barbies says to Ken, 'Oh my god, I never would have realized that Deckard was a replicant,'" Gerwig recalled with a laugh. "Then when she gets unbrainwashed, there's a version where she said, 'I liked the voiceover. I needed it to help me understand what was happening. Nobody's following this.'"

"It wasn't making fun of him. We loved him as we love all of our references," Baumbach said, with Gerwig adding, "Every reference we had was out of love. We love Sly Stallone. Everything was a lighters-up tribute."

DC's James Wan Answers If Aquaman's Baby Will Die in Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/aquaman-2-spoilers-james-wan-responds-aquaman-baby-death-rumors/ Mon, 04 Dec 2023 04:01:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt b1ae1a82-49f4-4bad-b165-9e881435d120

Judging by the marketing surrounding Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom so far, Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) will stop at nothing to get his revenge on the eponymous Justice Leaguer. Some have speculated this means the live-action adaptation of one of Aquaman's most controversial comic story arcs, where Aquaman's nemesis kills Arthur Curry Jr., the child he has with Mera. With James Wan on-hand at CCXP on Sunday, one panelist asked the filmmaker if that storyline would make it into the film.

"We'll see. That'd be dark," Wan said during the Aquaman 2 panel.

Will there be an Aquaman 3?

Though it looks like Jason Momoa is preparing to play Lobo in the new DC Universe after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom releases, Wan previously revealed the film will set up a potential threequel should studio executives so desire it.

"What I can speak to that is the Jason Momoa story, definitely, as Aquaman definitely has more places to go, and yes," Wan said earlier this fall. "When we get to the end of this... The answer is yes. I don't know how to answer that without giving things away, because where we go at the end of this movie, it does tee up something bigger... Not bigger but it does tee up a direction for that story, and I don't want to speak to that just because it's the end of the movie."

In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which arrives in theaters on December 22nd, when an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see the return of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and Randall Park as Stephen Shin. Jani Zhao will play new character Stingray, Indya Moore will play Karshon, and Vincent Regan will play Atlan, who was previously portrayed by Graham McTavish in Aquaman. Pilou Asbaek has also joined the cast in a mystery role.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is directed by James Wan, with a script from David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Producers include Wan and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran.

Jason Momoa Explains Aquaman 2 Writing Credit: "I Love This Character" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jason-momoa-aquaman-2-writing-credit-the-lost-kingdom-ccxp-2023/ Mon, 04 Dec 2023 01:55:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo e7cd51c3-0c6d-4ad0-9897-33ff3f6bcf42

When news surfaced that Jason Momoa co-wrote the story for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the Aquaman actor said: "It's pretty much all me, and I love it. I'm extremely proud of it." Momoa took the stage at the CCXP convention in S?o Paulo, Brazil on Sunday to reflect on his reign as the underwater king -- a reign that will come to an end when Aquaman 2 concludes the DC Extended Universe. Joined by his co-stars Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and story co-writer and director James Wan, Momoa noted that his tenure as the aquatic hero is "the longest I've ever played a character."

"There's a lot of things you want to do and fulfill as an actor, and also for the fans, and for myself. When we finished the first one, I had a lot of ideas. And I started to put them down, just put down in my heart and my love for the character. Then we got a meeting with DC and Warners and James [Wan]," Momoa explained. The actor then recalled the "nerve-racking" experience pitching his story idea for the follow-up to DC Films' first billion-plus grossing film.

"I've never done that before. I pitched my own idea but I'm like, 'They can't fault me on this, because I love this character and I've played it for so long. Here's some ideas that I would like to do.' And they responded really well to it, and then James liked a lot of ideas, and then they took that and ran with it and took it to another level."

Momoa broke the film's story with Braven and The Last Manhunt writer Thomas Pa'a Sibbett. Also credited is the story writing team of Wan and screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who penned the script. Like Arthur Curry -- the half-merman, half-human hero who is between the underwater and surface worlds -- Momoa found himself in two worlds as he played the character in Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League before returning for Wan's Aquaman.

"The cool thing about it is, it's not just like I'm hired to do a job. I love this character," Momoa added. "He was made fun of so much. And to bring this character back, and go from Zack's world into James' world -- it's been me for so long. I'm really proud for everyone to see this movie because we all really shine."

Momoa described the Aquaman sequel as a "brothers' journey" partnering Arthur with his scorned half-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), who attempted to rule the surface world as the Oceanmaster before he was defeated by Aquaman. Together, the brothers must thwart the vengeful Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who now wields the powerful Black Trident: a mythical weapon capable of destroying their kingdom, the world -- and Aquaman's family. That means Arthur's son with Mera (Amber Heard), heir to the throne of Atlantis.

"I'm a dad, and I get to be the father now," Momoa said, adding The Lost Kingdom explores "responsibility, and weight, and what it means to be a father and a king."

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom opens in theaters December 22.

Superman: Legacy: James Gunn Reveals How Close the Script Is to Being Done https://comicbook.com/dc/news/superman-legacy-james-gunn-reveals-how-close-the-script-is-to-being-done/ Sun, 03 Dec 2023 19:59:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 8b29a3cf-98f0-44ce-a194-dc0237d7b827

James Gunn and Peter Safran were tapped to be the co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios last year, and Gunn's first big project is Superman: Legacy. The cast announcements have been coming along with David Corenswet confirmed to play Superman, Nicholas Hoult signed on as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and more. The movie is currently slated to be released in 2025, and some fans are wondering how Gunn's script is coming along.

Gunn recently took to Threads to share that his script for the DC reboot is almost complete. "99.9%," Gunn revealed when asked how far along he was with writing Superman: Legacy. "I'm always changing small things but it's been essentially done since well before the strike." You can view his post here.

What Is Superman: Legacy About?

DC Studios describes Superman: Legacy as the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. Superman: Legacy will be written and directed by James Gunn, and will serve as the first film installment of his and Peter Safran's DC Universe reboot.

In addition to the previously mentioned stars, Superman: Legacy will feature Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

"It's not an origin story," Safran previously explained to reporters when asked about the film. "It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He has kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned."

When Is Superman: Legacy Being Released?

When Superman: Legacy was first announced by Warner Bros. and DC Studios, Gunn confirmed that the movie would be released in theaters on July 11, 2025. Gunn recently revealed that this date is special to him.

"My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, 'Dude, it's Dad's birthday.' I hadn't realized," Gunn tweeted earlier this year. "I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn't understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn't be making this movie now without him. It has been a long road to this point."

Stay tuned for more updates about Superman: Legacy.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: New Images Released https://comicbook.com/dc/news/aquaman-and-the-lost-kingdom-new-images-released/ Sun, 03 Dec 2023 19:30:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 257661e1-5ff1-4821-9fe4-e074635baa92

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is being released exclusively in theaters later this month, and it is expected the final movie of the Snyderverse era. The film sees the return of James Wan in the director's chair in addition to Jason Momoa as the titular hero, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and more. Some new photos were just released from the sequel, including stills from the film as well as shots of Wan directing the stars.

"The technology just in general advances with each passing year," Wan previously explained to ComicBook.com. "It was just on the first movie to this one. I see a huge leap even in the effects, which is obviously there in your face, but even just the process of how we shoot the film is a bit different. The actors had such a hard time shooting the first one, all this really complex rigging that we had to put them through, and it's not the best for them when they're trying to act at the same time, meanwhile they're doing a lot of pain in these really difficult."

Wan continued, "So what's great about this one was I could actually free them up from all that. And my special effects and visual effects team did a really great job with hearing what I had to complain about from the first movie and basically helping me build a process on how to get the same thing that I want, but without putting the actors through all of that, and so therefore I can actually get better performances from them."

Two of Hollywood's biggest superhero actors are feuding -- for a pretty unexpected reason. In a recent social media post on TikTok, Aquaman star Jason Momoa jokingly called out Thor star Chris Hemsworth, acknowledging that because his new costume in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is padded, he didn't need to work out beforehand. Hemsworth, who next stars in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, then took to his own TikTok to issue a rebuttal, posting a video of himself working out in a sleeveless shirt and joking that he prefers "a skin suit."

What Is Aquaman 2 About?

In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which arrives in theaters on December 25th, when an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation. Producers include Wan and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran.

"I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU," Momoa revealed in an interview with Total Film magazine earlier this year. "It's on, bro - there's no one bigger than Aquaman! But, also, I hope people are excited to see the new one. It's fun. I really enjoy doing comedy. There's some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It's like we're brothers. There's a lot of cool stuff happening in this one."

What Is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga About?

In Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, as the world fell, young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

"I came into that film exhausted. I thought, 'How am I going to get through this?'" Hemsworth recalled in an interview with GQ earlier this year. "Week one of rehearsals with [Miller], all of a sudden it was this reigniting of my creative energy ... [It was] by far the best experience of my career, and something I feel the most proud of. It made me think, the work isn't what's exhausting, it's what kind of work it is, and how invested I am in it and if it is challenging in the right ways ... I'm on the hunt for more George Millers. Or more of George Miller. If he'll have me."

The film will also stars an ensemble cast that also includes Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson, and Quaden Bayles.

DC Studios' James Gunn Shares His Spotify Wrapped https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dc-studios-james-gunn-shares-spotify-wrapped-dcu-superman-legacy/ Sat, 02 Dec 2023 02:20:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson b206d43c-88a7-4aa2-a542-339d0723135a

It's almost the end of the year, meaning that it's time to look back on some of our favorites and biggest memories of 2023. For a number of people, that is helped by Spotify's Spotify Wrapped -- and it looks like DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is joining in on the fun. In a recent post on Threads, Gunn shared a few screenshots from his Wrapped, which reveals which artists he listened to the most actively in 2023.

Gunn also shared his playlist of his top songs for 2023 -- but with a few missing, because they apparently lead to future projects Gunn is working on. With Gunn writing DC Studios' Creature Commandos animated series, as well as writing and directing Superman: Legacy, there's no telling what these missing tracks could end up being.

What Is Superman: Legacy About?

Per DC Studios, Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. Superman: Legacy will be written and directed by Gunn, and will serve as the first film installment of his and Peter Safran's DC Universe reboot.

"It's not an origin story," DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran told reporters earlier this year. "It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He has kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned."

Who Is in the Cast of Superman: Legacy?

Superman: Legacy will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.

"I'm gobsmacked," Carrigan revealed in a recent interview with Deadline. "I think it's just such an exciting new chapter, and such an exciting new chapter for DC. I think this movie has the potential to just really knock everyone's socks off, and with James Gun at the helm, I think it's just going to be so much fun."

"I'm thrilled to be a part of it. I'm honored to be playing this part, and I'm playing a hero," Carrigan continued. "So, on top of everything, that's pretty rad."

What Is On the DC Universe Slate?

As Gunn and Safran revealed earlier this year, the initial DC Studios slate for "Gods and Monsters" will include movies for Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series.

"A lot of people think it's going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences," Gunn explained at the time. "We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we're a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we've gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we're also creating a universe that is like Star Wars, where there's different times, different places, different things, or Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex."

Superman: Legacy's James Gunn Plays Coy on If Major DC Villains Will Appear https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-legacys-james-gunn-plays-coy-on-if-major-dc-villains-will-appear/ Sat, 02 Dec 2023 00:47:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 57376a33-9d4b-456a-8ab0-a7c4ecfdedf2

Few filmmakers are more interactive on social media than James Gunn, and now that the DC Studios boss has a Superman movie in pre-production, fans are wondering what that movie -- and its follow-ups -- might mean for the rest of the DC Universe. So far, there isn't much in the way of clear information about the story for Superman: Legacy. A handful of guest stars have been named, but they're mostly other superheroes or traditional Superman supporting characters, suggesting that it's unlikely most of them will have a ton of screen time. The villain isn't yet known.

Ahead of the looming holiday break, after which the movie will supposedly go into production, one fan on Threads asked Gunn about a number of villains, musing on the odds of them making their way into a sequel. Gunn wasn't going to reveal anything, though, and gave only the kinda-cryptic answer that he's only worried about the first movie right now.

You can see the interaction below.

future-superman-movies.png

It's likely Gunn does have at least some idea of where he might go next with Superman -- although not guaranteed, since the Man of Steel is likely to show up in some of DC's other planned movies and TV shows before he gets his own sequel.

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as the title character, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Little is known about the story of Superman: Legacy, other than that it will involve a version of Superman who is settled into his role as the world's protector, but who also has a network of allies to fall back on. Gotham's Anthony Carrigan is set to appear in the movie as Metamorpho, and other superheroes in the film include Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Superman's origin story, already shown in a number of prior film adaptations, won't take up a significant amount of real estate in Legacy, according to prior statements from Gunn.

Gunn is lining up some familiar talent on the project, with cinematographer Henry Braham (The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3); production designer Beth Mickle (The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3); costume designer Judianna Makovsky (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Avengers: Endgame); and art director David Scott (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Spider-Man: No Way Home). Casting is by Yellowstone and Oppenheimer's John Papsidera.

Superman: Legacy is expected in theaters on July 11, 2025.

SnyderVerse: Netflix Exec Addresses Possibility of Continuing the DC Franchise https://comicbook.com/movies/news/snyderverse-netflix-exec-addresses-possibility-continuing-dc-franchise/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 23:23:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson a4b722ac-7b59-4295-bf18-6c7231c1718d

The live-action DC Universe has gone through a number of changes over the years, as Warner Bros. has sought to turn the franchise into a cinematic universe. The previous attempt to do so was anchored by Zack Snyder's trilogy of DC films, Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder's Justice League -- but as fans of the director already know, more sequels were initially set to be in the cards. Seeing as Snyder has now signed an exclusive deal with Netflix, some fans have wondered if the streaming service could possibly end up continuing those stories, concurrently to James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix head of film Scott Stuber addressed the possibility of continuing the "SnyderVerse", acknowledging that "that's always tricky because you don't own it." Even with that fact in mind, Stuber hinted that there's a chance that Snyder's DC movies could be licensed over to Netflix, following a trend of several other DC movies hitting the platform.

"Obviously we would like to license it at some point," Stuber said. "We'd love to have it on so that fans can experience more Zack. The more Zack we have the better we are."

What Is Zack Snyder Making for Netflix?

Snyder's collaboration with Netflix, which began with 2021's Army of the Dead, has inspired multiple film and television projects, including the upcoming two-part epic Rebel Moon. This includes several Army of the Dead spinoffs -- a prequel film Army of Thieves and the upcoming sequel Planet of the Dead. He also is set to be involved with Twilight of the Gods, an animated series for the streamer inspired by Norse mythology.

"I would hope that anything Snyderverseian is [whatever] we're doing as original IP," Snyder explained in a 2021 interview. "The DC universe is something that's very close to my heart and something I spent a lot of time developing and thinking about, so I love it. But where I am right now is with the Rebel Moon of it all and the Army of the Dead of it all. They're very much consuming our creative output. Hopefully, just anything that we're doing that's original and cool would fit into that category."

What Is Rebel Moon About?

In Rebel Moon: Part One: A Child of Fire, when a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Motherworld, Kora assembles a small band of warriors -- outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a new army of heroes is formed.

"This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan," Snyder said in a statement when the film was first announced. "It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out... I've spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I've been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized."

Fan-Made Arrowverse Super Friends Animation Unites the Justice League https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/fan-made-arrowverse-super-friends-animation-unites-the-justice-league/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 17:11:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 743bddd5-d09d-40d2-970b-0d3ddb697faf

Nearly three years after the original teaser dropped online, David M. Jones -- the artist behind the popular "Arrow Jedi" viral fan videos and an animator and graphic designer who later worked with Stephen Amell's Nocking Point Wines -- has finished and released his animated Arrowverse Super Friends short. Bringing together the Justice League as seen at the end of the 2020 Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover (with a couple of extra faces for good measure), the short mimics the style of the classic Super Friends cartoons, reimagined to feature the heroes of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Black Lightining, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

The animation is inspired by the fact that, in the final scene of "Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Five," the newly-formed (and still unnamed) Justice League sits around their conference table in the Hall of Justice, only to hear a crash and the sound of a monkey hooting. The camera pans away from the team to reveal a broken cage with the name "Gleek" on it, as the classic Super Friends theme plays in the background.

"I started this project way back in July 2019 and finally finished it last week," Jones told ComicBook.com in a Discord message. "Set on Earth-73, this reimaging of the classic Super Friends cartoon has been updated to feature the CW Arrowverse characters."

You can see Jones's video below.

The Arrowverse Super Friends animation is kind of a sequel to Jones's Arrow '66 animation, in which he did an Arrow-inspired riff on the Batman TV show opening.

"I've had this idea as a follow-up to my Arrow-66 for a while, and thought the 'Crisis' crossover was a good way to tie it all together," Jones told ComicBook.comback in 2020. "I originally had a different lineup of heroes, but changed it after the 'Crisis' finale."

At the time, Jones planned to get the animation finished within a month or so, but after he started getting a lot more paid work, Arrowverse Super Friends kept getting pushed back.

Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) may have laid the groundwork for the Arrowverse Justice League, but he didn't get to be a part of it, because the character died in "Crisis on Infinite Earths." Part of the reason the team came together in the Hall of Justice was to memorialize their fallen friend, hanging his costume in front of an eternal flame in the vacated STAR Labs facility. That facility, modeled after the Hall of Justice from Super Friends, had first appeared in the Invasion! crossover a few years prior. Jones's decision to move the animation to "Earth-73" allowed Green Arrow to have a real presence on the team.

Suicide Squad Isekai Releases New Trailer https://comicbook.com/anime/news/suicide-squad-isekai-anime-new-trailer/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 13:43:00 +0000 Evan Valentine a48f783e-e79f-41ed-bb2b-186fa1615bb9

DC Comics is getting into the anime game with Suicide Squad Isekai. Teaming up with Wit Studio, the production house responsible for the likes of Ranking of Kings, Spy x Family, and the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, DC's biggest band of misfits is tackling a new mission that has them exploring another world. On top of a new trailer, new information has arrived that fleshes out the full roster of this iteration of the Squad and the voice actors that will be bringing them to life.

The roster for this version of the Suicide Squad will include Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, Clayface, and Peacemaker, led by Amanda Waller once again. Harley Quinn will be voiced by Anna Nagase (Summer Time Rendering), Deadshot will be voiced by Reigo Yamaguchi (Emininence in Shadow), Peacemaker will be voiced by Takehito Koyasu (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), Clayface will be voiced by Jun Fukuyama (Blue Exorcist), and King Shark will be voiced by Subaru Kimura (Jujutsu Kaisen). While not a part of the team directly it seems, that anime will have the Joker play a role, who is set to be voiced by Yuichiro Umehara (Goblin Slayer).

The Suicide Squad Are Isekai-Bound

The trailer not only gives anime fans a closer look at the Suicide Squad's first Isekai adventure but also confirms that the series will arrive next year. From the trailer, it seems that the Squad has a limited amount of time in this new fantasy world thanks to the bombs placed in their skulls prepping to detonate.

If you want to know more about Suicide Squad Isekai, Warner Bros described the upcoming anime project as such, "DC's Harley Quinn, the Joker, and The Suicide Squad rampage onto the stage of ISEKAI* in the new original anime series from Warner Bros. Japan and Wit Studio, Suicide Squad ISEKAI. The most maddening worlds collide in an epic and violent fantasy with the strongest line-up of anime creators! *ISEKAI means 'another world', which is now one of the most popular genres for Japanese anime."

What other DC heroes and villains do you want to see get their own anime series? Do you think that the Suicide Squad will fit in well in the genre known as Isekai? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of the Squad.

Justice League: Zack Snyder Addresses Reports About Snyder Cut Fans Using Bots https://comicbook.com/movies/news/justice-league-zack-snyder-addresses-reports-snyder-cut-fans-bots/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 05:49:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson ca076536-d883-48cb-a58c-9b2154a81e3c

Zack Snyder's Justice League arrived on HBO Max in 2021, being a rare instance of a longstanding fan campaign coming to fruition. The "Snyder Cut" movement has been the topic of quite a lot of conversation, including claims that artificial "bot" accounts might have been used to gain traction online. in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder addressed those reports -- and argued that because their efforts ultimately succeeded, "it doesn't matter."

"The truth is? It doesn't matter. The movie got made," Snyder explained. "If they were smart enough to employ bots in this thing, then they won. That movie has no business existing - and it does."

Did the Snyder Cut Campaign Use Bots?

Multiple reports have hinted at Snyder's fans utilizing bots, beginning with a 2022 report from The Wrap regarding the Oscars' inaugural "Fan Favorite" and "Cheer Moment" awards, which went to Snyder's Army of the Dead and Zack Snyder's Justice League, respectively. Their report cites two findings from the hashtag analytics tracking tool Tweetbinder, which determined that the most active contributors to both polls were autonomous web programs which seemingly cast thousands of fake votes for Army of the Dead and Zack Snyder's Justice League. This seemingly resulted in some surprising trends, such as a single-day spike on February 27th where over 25,000 votes were cast, as opposed to the usual daily average of between 4,000 and 15,000 votes. David Kirsch, a University of Maryland professor who is cited in the article, also argues that the activities of the accounts voting for Snyder "certainly do not look like they were generated by a human user."

A subsequent report from Rolling Stone dove into the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut hashtag, claiming that at least 13 percent of the accounts that were part of the Snyder Cut conversation online were fake.

Snyder's collaboration with Netflix, which began with 2021's Army of the Dead, has inspired multiple film and television projects, including the upcoming two-part epic Rebel Moon. DC's James Gunn Quickly Debunks Amanda Waller Rumor https://comicbook.com/dc/news/dcs-james-gunn-quickly-debunks-amanda-waller-rumor/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 04:53:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 65d9f2c6-3ae2-4aba-a6bd-84459ac89ae1

Ever since James Gunn took over the reigns at DC Studios with Peter Safran the filmmaker has made one thing clear, he won't tolerate any false gossip to spread. Gunn was asked on Threads about a recent rumor from YouTube that the Amanda Waller TV series had been cancelled. It all started when an account called Jody's Corner claimed that the Amanda Waller show, spinning out of Peacemaker and featuring Viola Davis, had been cancelled for budgetary reasons. When asked about it directly, Gunn didn't mince words, writing: "It's bullsh-t. Waller is still being written by Christal and Jeremy."

The Amanda Waller TV series was first revealed last summer as being in the works, but its existence was confirmed back in January when Gunn revealed the full slate for the DCU's first chapter. Waller was actually the second project announced by Gunn, seemingly teasing that it will arrive early in the slate of "Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters," announcing its existence just after the animated Creature Commandos.

"This is a story of Amanda Waller who is played by Viola Davis," Gunn said earlier this year. "Viola Davis is going to team up with members of Team Peacemaker and this is a story that's been created by Crystal Henry who did Watchman and Jeremy Carver who created Doom Patrol. It is a fantastic story that's out of this world and I can't wait for people to see it."

Creature Commandos and Waller weren't the only television shows announced for the DCU, with others confirmed including Lanterns, a Green Lantern-focused series; Paradise Lost, a Game of Thrones-esque series set on Themyscira; and Booster Gold, a comedy featuring the DC hero. The feature films confirmed for the DCU's Chapter 1 include Superman: Legacy, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold (featuring the DCU's version of Batman, separate from Robert Pattinson's The Batman), Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing.

Viola Davis made her debut as Amanda Waller in 2016's Suicide Squad, returning for the 2021 follow-up The Suicide Squad, and even this year's Black Adam. Having appeared in a few episodes of Peacemaker as well, Davis is set to lend her voice to the Creature Commandos series in addition to starring in her own show. She marks one of the few characters that will survive the transition from the DCEU set of movies to the all-new DCU.

"As a comic book and Wonder Woman fan, I love the whole DC Comics universe," Davis previously told The Hollywood Reporter of portraying Waller. "I traded comic books as a kid so all of that appeals to me. When you dream about being an actor as a kid, that's what you dream about. That's like play acting: being the superhero, getting the gun; it plays into that fantasy."

Jodie Foster Reveals Why She Thinks Superhero Movies Are "a Phase" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jodie-foster-superhero-movies-phase/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 23:10:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 87a55a5a-7851-44df-ad9e-f076ba437752

Academy Award winner Jodie Foster is sharing her thoughts on the recent boom of superhero media. In a recent interview with Elle, called the influx of superhero movies "a phase that's lasted a little too long," arguing that she hopes the industry will leave room for different kinds of movies to be made. That being said, she did cite a few examples that emotionally connected with her, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Iron Man and Black Panther.

"It's a phase. It's a phase that's lasted a little too long for me, but it's a phase, and I've seen so many different phases," Foster explained. "Hopefully people will be sick of it soon. The good ones -- like Iron Man, Black Panther, The Matrix -- I marvel at those movies, and I'm swept up in the entertainment of it, but that's not why I became an actor. And those movies don't change my life. Hopefully there'll be room for everything else."

What Has Jodie Foster Said About Superhero Movies?

This is the second time that Foster has made headlines for her comments on the superhero boom, arguing in a 2017 interview that she would only join that sphere if it was a project with a "really complex psychology." Otherwise, she argued that the landscape of superhero adaptations is ruining the viewing habits of general audiences, even if they don't know it yet.

"Going to the movies has become like a theme park," Foster explained at the time. "Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking -- you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth. It's ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world. I don't want to make $200 million movies about superheroes."

Is There Superhero Fatigue?

In recent years, and especially in 2023, there has been a lot of talk about whether or not the superhero landscape has reached its glut, especially as the quality of franchises like the MCU and the DC Extended Universe has begun to vary wildly. Even James Gunn, who is currently co-leading the newly-minted DC Studios, has argued that there are "too many" superhero movies without a meaningful emotional center.

"I think there is such a thing as superhero fatigue," Gunn shared with Rolling Stone. "I think it doesn't have anything to do with superheroes. It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character. We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they're these incredible characters that we have in our hearts. And if it becomes just a bunch of nonsense onscreen, it gets really boring. But I get fatigued by most spectacle films, by the grind of not having an emotionally grounded story. It doesn't have anything to do with whether they're superhero movies or not. If you don't have a story at the base of it, just watching things bash each other, no matter how clever those bashing moments are, no matter how clever the designs and the VFX are, it just gets fatiguing, and I think that's very, very real."

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Box Office Projected for up to $60 Million Opening Weekend https://comicbook.com/dc/news/aquaman-2-lost-kingdom-box-office-opening-weekend-christmas-projections/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 19:48:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 4ae1b216-cffe-4f32-9d2f-5d848326bc1c

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's box office projections are up to $60 million on the high end of the scale - and $50 million on the low end in its four-day Christmas holiday window of release. Christmas Day 2023 falls on a Monday, giving Warner Bros. and director James Wan more runway for a strong opening, with Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday, giving families everywhere all the opportunity in the world to head out to the theater.

For comparison, the first Aquaman had an opening weekend box office of $67.8M when it was released around the Christmas holiday in 2018. That film ultimately earned $1.152 billion worldwide by the end of its run - surprising quite a few people. However, Aquaman 2 is coming out in a very different time and under a very different set of circumstances, which must be considered.

First, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has the precarious role of being the final installment of the DCEU franchise that started with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel in 2013. While The Lost Kingdom is opening in theaters, James Gunn is already hard at work making Superman: Legacy - a movie that will serve as the opening chapter of a rebooted DC Universe franchise. There's already been substantial evidence that the announcement of DC Studios and a new DCU (a year ago now) has taken a toll on the final slate of movies from the DCEU era. The Flash only earned $270.6M on a colossal budget of $200M+; meanwhile, even strong reviews couldn't stop Blue Beetle from being a similar underperformer in theaters, earning just $129M worldwide on a budget of $104M.

That all said, the trailers for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have painted it as being a standalone sequel to the first film - and a blockbuster spectacle, visually speaking. The straightforward revenge story (Black Manta vs. Aquaman's family) and star power of Jason Momoa may give it a chance the other DC films (one a canon-heavy story, the other a relatively unknown character new to live-action) didn't have. Of all the many movies coming out around Christmas this year (including Timothee Chalamet's Wonka, and Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon) Aquaman 2 is still the only action blockbuster movie that can entertain a whole family. The franchise could once again surprise us.

What Is Aquaman 2 About?

(Photo: Warner Bros.)

In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which arrives in theaters on December 25th, when an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.

Bruce Campbell Jokes James Gunn Sent Him Cease and Desist Over Kingdom Come Superman https://comicbook.com/movies/news/bruce-campbell-joke-james-gunn-cease-and-desist-kingdom-come-superman/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 00:00:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 194dd474-3bdf-4861-9e3e-a9f1e3383306

Bruce Campbell has been tied to a number of iconic genre projects, from the Evil Dead franchise to the recent Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Earlier this year, Campbell threw his hat into the ring to play a new character -- the older iteration of Superman from DC's Kingdom Come. With DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran shepherding a new era of onscreen DCU stories, that naturally begs the question of whether or not Campbell could actually play the character, but that apparently isn't the case. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com to promote Discontinued, Campbell joked that Gunn's lawyers sent him a cease and desist over his Kingdom Come aspirations.

"Yeah, actually his lawyers did," Campbell explained in our interview, which you can check out above. "'Cease and desist', I think, were the two words that I remember."

Campbell was then asked if he would rather portray Kingdom Come Superman or Sgt. Rock, the DC character whose most recent miniseries was co-written by Campbell.

"I'd have to play more like Rock, because I like the guys with no superpowers," Campbell explained. "Sgt. Rock could be killed by a sniper's bullet at any time. He is a completely human dude. His superpowers are courage, loyalty, brute strength, which is kind of nice. And he's kind of a tough guy. It's fun writing a tough guy again. Our superheroes are all warm and fuzzy now. Rock's not a warm and fuzzy guy."

Is The DCU Adapting Kingdom Come?

While a Kingdom Come project is not confirmed to be part of the future DC Universe slate, Gunn has posted covers and panels from the miniseries on social media, leading some to wonder how it could inspire or influence the movies and Max shows on the horizon. As Gunn and his DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran revealed earlier this year, the initial DC Studios slate for "Gods and Monsters" will include movies for Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series.

"If you look at the MCU, there are very few traditional superheroes," Gunn previously said of the DCU's approach. "There was never a guy with a secret identity until Spider-Man in the MCU. Their Cap was turned into a soldier even though he wears a mask. Iron Man outed himself at the end of the first Iron Man because they don't want to deal with the whole secret identity stuff. But there is a bit more of a fantasy element to DCU, because there are these larger-than-life superheroes and for me, there's Superman and Clark Kent. They're two different characters, and you have to find a way to deal with them that's as grounded as possible within this world of DC. One of the things that I love about DC, that excites me about DC, is that in a way it's another alternate history. It is Gotham City and Metropolis and Star City and Bludhaven, and all these different places in this other reality, and it makes it a little bit like Westeros in some ways. I love it in that way. I love that we get to create true worldbuilding in DC, it isn't just 'we're throwing some superheroes on Earth.' I think right now, that's one of the key differences."

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Says Company Made "the Right Decision" Shelving Batgirl https://comicbook.com/movies/news/warner-bros-discovery-ceo-david-zaslav-scrap-dc-batgirl-took-courage/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 21:30:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo fac04b09-9fce-46f7-9b0f-5c70a9bf26fb

When Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav shelved DC's Batgirl as a cost-cutting measure, new DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran called the controversial decision a "courageous" one. "That film was not releasable," the Aquaman and Shazam! producer told press during DC Studios' slate reveal earlier this year. "I actually think that Zaslav and the team made a very bold and courageous decision to cancel it because it would have hurt DC. It would have hurt those people involved." Appearing at The New York Times Dealbook Summit in New York on Wednesday, Zaslav agreed, saying it took "courage" to axe the $90 million Batgirl.

"What content is going to help us win? The content that wasn't, we made a strategic decision on," Zaslav said, according to The Verge. "It was difficult and it was painful. But I think it was the right decision for the company and it was necessary."

Originally ordered for the HBO Max streaming service, Batgirl was reportedly budgeted at $80 million before costs rose to nearly $90 million due to COVID-19 protocols. It was later reported that the studio would save between $15 million - $20 million by opting to take a tax write-down rather than release the movie, which had completed filming but not post-production. Scrapping Batgirl -- and the $40 million animated movie Scoob! Holiday Haunt -- was part of Zaslav's company-wide cost-cutting measures to pare down $3 billion in debt post-merger.

Batgirl starred Leslie Grace (In the Heights) in the titular role of Barbara Gordon. The cast also included Michael Keaton (The Flash), reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, J.K. Simmons (Justice League) as Barbara's father, GCPD Commissioner James Gordon, and Brendan Fraser (The Whale) as the pyromaniac villain Firefly. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah later confirmed that Warner Bros. Discovery purged the film from its servers -- any and all Batgirl footage was "gone."

"The guys from Warners told us it was not a talent problem from our part or the actress, or even the quality of the movie," El Arbi told the French outlet SKRIPT. "They told us it was a strategic change. There was new management, and they wanted to save some money."

"The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership's strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max," a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement at the time. "Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future."

Warner Bros. Discovery came under fire earlier this month when it was reported that live-action/animated hybrid Coyote vs. Acme, starring John Cena and Wile E. Coyote, would join Batgirl in the studio vault rather than release in theaters or stream on MAX. The Looney Tunes movie was to be shelved because the relaunched Warner Bros. Animation shifted its "global strategy to focus on theatrical releases," a spokesperson said. But that decision was reversed: unlike Batgirl, Warner Bros. is reportedly shopping Coyote vs. Acme to rival streamers.

Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part One Rating Revealed https://comicbook.com/anime/news/justice-league-crisis-on-infinite-earths-part-one-rating-revealed/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 20:53:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame b062fa90-7c55-4888-b08a-f9b2ed1935a0

Just days after the release of its first trailer, the animated adaptation of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One has been rated PG-13 for "some violence and brief strong language" by the Motion Picture Association. Given that this is part one of a three-part animated epic, it's likely that the next to parts of Crisis will carry the same rating, putting it more or less on par with the TV-14 rating the the "Arrowverse" shows on the CW (and thus the live-action adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths from 2019 and 2020) carried during their time on the air.

The story of Crisis on Infinite Earths centers on The Monitor, a being of nearly infinite cosmic power, bringing the heroes of DC's multiverse together to do battle with the Anti-Monitor, a his doppelganger from the anti-matter universe. In the story, the Anti-Monitor was destroying universes, transforming them into anti-matter to expand his domain, and weakening the Monitor's power in the process.

The original story, from 1985, created seismic changes at DC, merging the multiple Earths of the multiverse into one single, coherent (if cluttered) timeline. Timelines shifted, origins changed, and some characters ceased to exist entirely. It also led to the rise of event comics as one of the direct market's most important sales drivers.

DC has published enough sequels to Crisis on Infinite Earths in the years since that characters within the DC Universe coined a specific term for them, "Crisis Events." Those sequels include 1994's Zero Hour: A Crisis in Time, 2005's Infinite Crisis, 2008's Final Crisis, 2011's Flashpoint, and 2022's Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. DC's television Arrowverse adapted the story into the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event in 2019. That story spanned Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman episodes, as well as cameo appearances by Black Lightning and numerous characters from throughout DC TV history, including Tom Welling's Clark Kent, Kevin Conroy's Bruce Wayne, and more.

Since multi-part animated adaptations of both Crisis on Infinite Earths and Watchmen were announced, some fans have questioned whether these two massive stories meant DC would be putting their long-running series of animated movies on ice after 2024. If so, it would line up with the creation of James Gunn's new DC Universe, which he has promised will tie live-action movies and TV together with animation and video games into one clear universe with the same actors playing the parts across all media. Warner has yet to confirm these suspicions, though, and it's equally possible that they just felt like they really needed a guaranteed win while the live-action movies are on hiatus.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths releases in 2024. DC's newest animated movie, Justice League: Warworld, premiered at Comic-Con in July ahead of its release Digital, 4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray.

Bruce Campbell Pitched Sgt. Rock Vs The Army of the Dead Movie to Sam Raimi (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/bruce-campbell-pitched-sgt-rock-vs-the-army-of-the-dead-movie-to-sam-raimi-exclusive/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 20:23:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 1f67f317-7570-4778-8f69-0738708f6c5d

About a year ago, Bruce Campbell made his superhero comics-writing debut. But despite having appeared in a number of Marvel movies, Campbell's first foray into writing superheroes was for DC, where he worked with artist Eduardo Risso on DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead. The series, which was recently released as a collected edition, is exactly what it says on the tin: DC's classic wartime hero Sgt. Rock facing off against an army of the undead. The story begins in Berlin, 1944. The Nazis are flanked on all fronts by the combined Allied forces, and defeat seems inevitable. In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war, Hitler and his team of evil scientists create a serum that resurrects their dead soldiers, creating an army of the dead even stronger than they were in life. Sgt. Rock, hero of the European Theatre, and his Easy Company find themselves dispatched into enemy territory to face off against the strangest, most horrific enemies they've encountered yet: Nazi Zombies.

Despite more recent depictions of Sgt. Rock as a grizzled, aging war veteran, it sounds like Campbell would want to see a younger leading man for the role, suggesting that the role could go to one of the Hemsworth brothers. What role that would leave open for Campbell in the film is anybody's guess.

"Man, that's a Michael Bay movie if I've ever seen one," Campbell told ComicBook.com. "You get one of the Hemsworth boys -- you get the cheaper one to play Sgt. Rock. It's a Brad Pitt-y kind of role. You need that tough guy blond dude."

"Oh my God, I think that it came out just now as a graphic novel, they put all is issues together, and I want to put that on Michael Bay's desk and be like, 'Dude, get going, start prep,'" Campbell added.

And, yes, before you asked, Campbell already pitched it to Sam Raimi, whose own undead series -- The Evil Dead -- introduced Raimi to the world.

"I gave it to Sam Raimi. I said 'Sam, your next movie,'" Campbell said, but he suggested that Raimi wasn't interested in taking on the project. Maybe producing Evil Dead remakes and making Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is close enough to a DC/zombies crossover that the director feels like he's already been there and done it.

Discontinued will premiere on Maximum Effort Channel on Fubo this Thursday, November 30th at 8:00PM ET. The Batman Star Con O'Neill Teases Character Return (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/dc/news/the-batman-part-2-sequel-con-oneill-teases-character-return-penguin-ofmd-exclusive/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 20:06:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 8a467caf-f3de-46db-b653-8afaf8e6a582

Matt Reeves' The Batman was released last year, and it saw Robert Pattinson taking on the role of the titular hero. The DC film was mostly a hit with critics and audiences, and DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn confirmed earlier this year that a sequel to The Batman is still in the works. While fans wait for Part II, a new show set in the same universe is heading to Max. The Penguin will see the return of Colin Farrell as Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot. Now, fans are wondering who else might pop up in the show. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Con O'Neill about his role as Izzy Hands in Our Flag Means Death, but many will also know the actor as Chief Mackenzie Bock from The Batman. While O'Neill didn't say if he'd be appearing in The Penguin, he did tease the inevitable return of his character.

"You'll see Bock in one form or another," O'Neill teased. "Soon-ish," he added. "That's all I'm allowed to say, really."

O'Neill continued, "But yeah, listen, do you know what? I loved The Batman. I'm a Batman guy, always have been. Batman, Spider-Man, they were my things when I was growing up. I thought Matt wrote a beautiful script to a great movie, and I thought Rob smashed it out of the f*cking park. So I would absolutely be delighted to go back and do some more. I'm really proud of the movie, and I think they've really landed on something special with this version of Batman."

You can watch our interview with O'Neill at the top of the page.

What Is The Penguin About?

According to Max's Sarah Aubrey, The Penguin is going to further flesh out the seedy underbelly of Gotham and Oswald's inner circle.

"The goal of this show is to what Oz's life is like and that's very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can," Aubrey said. "As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions. It's a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters. It's very much going to be about Gotham at that street level because he's not flying around like Batman does. We are all embracing that as a very specific experience for audiences to have."

Matt Reeves previously spoke about The Penguin and teased what Farrell's return to the role and spoke about working with producer Dylan Clark and showrunner Lauren LeFranc.

"Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill," Reeves explained. "Dylan and I are so excited to work with Lauren in continuing Oz's story as he grabs violently for power in Gotham."

DC's The Penguin is expected to premiere in late 2024 on Max with The Batman -- Part II currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 3, 2025. You can watch Con O'Neill in Our Flag Means Death on Max.

The Sandman Season 2 Resumes Production at Netflix https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/sandman-season-2-netflix-show-series-neil-gaiman/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 17:16:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett 5f8d92dc-69c9-48b1-9595-4b8aa0ed3228

Netflix is celebrating the 35th anniversary of The Sandman comic book series by resuming production on The Sandman Season 2. The Sandman's production was halted by the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike but will now begin again as work continues on adapting Neil Gaiman's beloved comic book opus. Netflix commemorated the occasion with the release of a new behind-the-scenes image from The Sandman set. The photo shows Dream of the Endless, played by Tom Sturridge, looming over his mischievous sibling Desire, portrayed by Mason Alexander Park. The Sandman is filming in London and is produced by Warner Bros. Television. You can see the new behind-the-scenes photo below.

Netflix also released a letter from Gaiman about The Sandman's 35th anniversary and the television adaptation resuming production. That letter follows

Neil Gaiman's The Sandman 35th Anniversary and Season 2 letter

"We never know where our dreams will take us. 35 years ago today, the first issue of The Sandman was released and set many people and characters on paths that seemed, even at the time, so unlikely as to be impossible. Back then most comics featured superheroes. Sandman wasn't that. It wasn't like anything else, but magically (the magic consisting of hard work, youthful overconfidence, and some key people who believed in the vision) we were given the opportunity to tell the story I had in my head and bring Morpheus and the rest of the Endless to life.

"A little over 36 years ago, in October 1987, the worst storm in at least 500 years left my house without power and my family trapped in our little village by fallen trees, and I spent my time writing an outline for the first eight issues of Sandman.

"Thirteen months later, in November 1988, the first issue of Sandman hit the comics shops.

"Like those who walk a path in Destiny's garden, I look back and see one clear path stretching behind me. At times on this journey the way forward seemed impossible, and I don't think I could have conceived of the impact that these characters would have on individuals or on the world. When I look at the path ahead, though, I don't see darkness. I see how the world of The Sandman continues to grow and evolve and take new forms.

"This week we officially restart production on the next sequence of stories of The Sandman for Netflix. Genius show runner Allan Heinberg and the countless people in front of and behind the camera are building something endlessly special, and bringing these stories to life in a way that would once have been unimaginable.

"A journey is beginning that will take us from Destiny's garden to Hell, from the Heart of the Dreaming to Ancient Greece and revolutionary France, and from there to places even I cannot quite imagine on the screen. I will be patient. Good things are coming."

What is The Sandman Season 2 about?

The Sandman Season 1 adapted the first two volumes of The Sandman comics, Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll's House. A bonus episode also adapted two standalone stories "Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Calliope." The Sandman Season 2 is expected to begin by adapting the fourth volume of The Sandman, titled Season of Mists, which contains its next major arc, involving Dream visiting Hell. More one-off episodes could also be in the works, as Gaiman discussed with ComicBook.com in August 2022.

"'A Midsummer Night's Dream,'" Gaiman answered when asked which The Sandman stories he's most looking forward to adapting. "I really want to see that. Really want to see 'Ramadan' and I love the fact that one of the reasons I'm saying I want to see Ramadan is because I don't know how we would do it. Would we move back into animation for that? Would we create a whole new way of storytelling? How do you indicate that you're in a story and the story world rather than in our reality? And I think I would love, and one that I'm really excited to tell doesn't really have Dream in it all, which is a story called 'Hob's Leviathan,' which is a whole gambling-on-a tall ship-out-in-the ocean story in I think about 1905, 1890's maybe, and I would love to see that story done mostly just because I think Kingsley's Hob is one of my favorite things on screen. It was just a glorious surprise in episode six. How funny and grounded and human he manages to be while also being awful sometimes. And I would love to see that character. Just see more of it."

The Sandman Season 1 is streaming now on Netflix and is also available on Blu-ray. Netflix will also be the new home of Dead Boy Detectives, a television series adapting another Gaiman co-creation that spun out of The Sandman.

DC #1

ACTION COMICS #1059

Action Comics #1059 isn't bad, but it's not good. It falls kind of in the middle when you take in all three stories in the issue. The first, the main story, "New Worlds" part three is solid. We get the full showdown between the Super Family and Blue Earth as well as all of its frustrations in how extremism can be manipulated for public consumption, but there's a twist about Norah's real identity--and interestingly it's Lois who more or less sorts it out first--that upends everything as it comes too late. It leaves everything on a major cliffhanger that feels like everything is a setup for something much much bigger. The second story, "Secret Identity" part two isn't terrible and shows Gene Luen Yang's creativity for sure, but there's the sense that the story is a little undercooked and unfinished - there are bits and aspects that feel confusing at times and could have been fleshed out more when it comes to Keenan Kong's story The third story, "A Heart In Metropolis" just feels like a poorly done lift of Superman: The Movie just with Jon and Jay and the art isn't particularly great here. The result is an issue that is just a mixed back that gets progressively less good as it continues. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 3 out of 5

ALAN SCOTT: THE GREEN LANTERN #2

Only two issues in, this series has established itself as a surprising--albeit, occasionally a bit too ambitious--reinvention of Alan Scott. Without getting into spoilers, Tim Sheridan's script is both sweeping and incredibly intimate, offering fans a lot to chew on with regards to Alan's past, present, and future. Cian Tormey's art gorgeously fits within a sort of house style, although some visuals occasionally require a bit of a double take. By and large, Alan Scott: The Green Lantern is succeeding at everything it's supposed to be, and that's great to see. -- Jenna Anderson

Rating: 4 out of 5

AMAZONS ATTACK #2

It's not often a companion book is as good strong as its flagship, but Amazons Attack comes pretty close. Each of the four lead characters gets the right amount of time to develop and differentiate themselves, creating a great balancing act of a core ensemble. Pair that with social commentary that consistently strikes the right chord, this series is firing on all cylinders. -- Charlie Ridgely

BATMAN '89: ECHOES #1

Writer Sam Hamm, artist Joe Quinones, and colorist Leonardo Ito return to the Batman and Batman Returns universe with Batman '89: Echoes. Following last year's Batman '89 series, Batman has been missing for years, but his impact on Gotham is still felt through the would-be copycats, who have inexplicably become the target of rage-fueled outbursts. Other "echoes" of Batman and the Joker's presence in Gotham include Barbara Gordon, whose pending transformation into Batgirl is foreshadowed by visual clues like the yellow trim of her coat framing her like a cape. Elsewhere is Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a fame-chasing celebrity psychiatrist. The Burton-verse Harley Quinn's shallowness is a far cry from the antihero Harley that's become a pillar of DC, veering closer to Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's original imagining of her as having only ever gotten into psychiatry to use Arkham's inmates to achieve fame while mostly skating by on looks instead of skill. Hamm cleverly suggests a professional rivalry with Dr. Jonathan Crane, the future Scarecrow, making it suddenly occur to me that their shared past vocation has gone largely unnoted in Batman stories until now (at least to my knowledge). When thinking back on Tim Burton's Batman films, it's the gothic aesthetic that endures. Quinones' tight linework and framing, and Ito's blue-purple color palette imbue it onto every page of this issue. With its unexpected ending, Batman '89: Echoes #1 is a thrilling return to a fan-favorite era. -- Jamie Lovett

Rating: 4 out of 5

BATMAN BEYOND: NEO-GOTHIC #5

Batman Beyond: Neo-Gothic has evolved past being simply a Batman Beyond story and more a story of two halves of Gotham fighting for survival, and that's part of what's made the series so fascinating. Neo-Gothic #5 is the epitome of this struggle, with the larger scale battle taking precedence over the narrower beginnings of the story. That's not a bad thing though at all, and it's impressive how well writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing weave those grander elements into the story. The Green and John Constantine's roles in this could easily derail the whole thing, but Kelly and Lanzing keep the plane on course and the goal in sight. Artist Max Dunbar and colorist Rain Beredo have a field day with those elements by the way, and the battles sequences in this issue are off the charts, especially when Constantine is involved. I'm curious to see how this plane lands, but Neo-Gothic has never failed me yet, so I'm not betting against it now. -- Matthew Aguilar

Rating: 4 out of 5

BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #7

The most recent installment in Batman: The Brave and The Bold delivers some excellent elements, but the anthology struggles to make its sum greater than any individual part. "Pygmalion," fails to function as the issue's A-story as its second chapter quickly dispenses with the mystery of a memory-less Batman for a much more familiar plot. The change in approach is sudden enough to question why so much space was invested in developing a premise in the first chapter that's largely done away with in the second. "Wild Dog: Here Comes Trouble" proves to be the issue's highlight combining an appreciation for midwestern eccentricities, an understated sense of humor, and outstanding action sequences. "Aquaman: Communion" may appeal to readers seeking out sci-fi oddities as Gabriel Hardman's depictions of both aliens and sentient Earth creatures make for excellent splashes, but the hook of its plot is lacking. A final installment featuring The Demon provides some fine opportunities to showcase Matteo Scalera's artwork in sequences filled with shadows and fire, but also lacks much in the way of a conclusion. The Brave and The Bold is still collecting some outstanding comics talent, but it's clear that most of these stories would be considered B-sides for good reasons, all but Wild Dog's, at least. -- Chase Magnett

CITY BOY #6

City Boy's finale is definitely fitting for its titular protagonist, even if it is just a bit too understated at times. Cameron's grip on his powers--and the threat they might pose for the entire DC Universe--come to a head in a visually-cool chaos, and Greg Pak's script delivers enough heart and nuance where it needs to, even as other elements are rushed. Minkyu Jung's art has fun in that cacophony, even if it falls a little bit flatter in the issue's quiter moments. There's no telling what the future will hold for City Boy, but at least this storyline got to stick (enough of) its landing. -- Jenna Anderson

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

CYBORG #5

The Titans guest-star alongside Cyborg in this one, and they do a good job playing supporting roles and allowing Cyborg to shine in his own comic book. We get some extra art from Travis Mercer in this one, and I enjoyed his style a lot more than Tom Raney's. It seemed to fit the characters better. Solace is a good adversary for Cyborg, and hopefully he sticks around when the series finishes up. -- Tim Adams

DETECTIVE COMICS #1078

Catwoman's rescue attempt is officially underway, as Gotham's heroes and villains make their move to rescue Batman from a public execution. Catwoman's attack on the Orghams is perhaps the most organized attempt to thwart the new villain's grip on Gotham yet, although it's still a little murky what's changed since the Orghams put Batman on his heels the previous arc. Is it the change of personnel, a more prepared counter-attack, or just a contrivance of plot? Still, this is a very engaging issue and the one-page reveal early in the issue hints at even more chaos to come. -- Christian Hoffer

Rating: 4 out of 5

THE FLASH #3

Each new fold in the mystery surrounding the Speed Force makes the eldritch horrors and impossible physics added to The Flash all the more tantalizing. The Flash #3 pairs up Wally West and Max Mercury to investigate and, combined with Mr. Terrific's own observations reveal new layers that could be plumbed for months, or even years, to come. There are threats present throughout the issue but it never needs to provide a supervillain in order to establish stakes. Rather, the unknown itself proves more than sufficient in summoning terrifying possibilities. Deodato's layouts remain central to unpacking this new perspective on space-time in superhero comics with metaphors from the story about poking and unfolding space leading into literal visualizations that make the entire ambitious approach gel exceedingly well. Wherever The Flash is going, it has shown readers it has the style, story, and skill to make this mystery one worth following wherever it leads next. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

GREEN ARROW #6

There are reunions and surprises galore, as DC wraps up the first storyline in Green Arrow's new series. The change in artists for the different storylines isn't too jarring, but Sean Izaakse is the standout. It seems every issue of Green Arrow has to include an almost splash page-like shot that tugs at the heartstrings, and that continues here. Amanda Waller looms large, and it feels like her story is only starting. -- Tim Adams

Rating: 3 out of 5

HARLEY QUINN #34

Harley Quinn #34 is just weird. That is no real surprise because this whole run has frankly ben extremely weird, but there's something nice about seeing Harley stand up for herself this issue as well as a quiet little reunion between Harley and Ivy which is what the issue really needed amid the chaos of a few too many puns and visual jokes. There's also the bizarre introduction of Harley AI and while I'm still not sold on this story knowing what it's doing, at least this issue was both kind of fun to read and visually fun to look at. -- Nicole Drum

THE PENGUIN #4

The promising aspect of The Penguin #4 is the promise that the story will begin in the next issue. While the addition of an ex-flame and advisor makes for the best of the "getting the band back together" installments, that doesn't set a terribly high bar either. Framing this particular installment as a job utilizing the entire team is intriguing, but it also makes all of the individual elements of that team, including both Oswald and The Help, seem borderline incompetent. The arrangement of this particular plot is too cute by half and raises a number of questions that will never receive an answer. It's the inclusion of some romantic tension and a partnership wherein Penguin isn't a singularly dominant figure that marks some promise for future development. It also showcases how well de Latorre can assemble the pieces of a multi-faceted plan on the page, even if this one isn't particularly compelling. Yet the promise remains that next month The Penguin will start owning its' obvious potential. -- Chase Magnett

POWER GIRL #3

Paige is someone you can spend hours with and not tire of her story or character. She's complicated, frustrated, hurt, and sometimes messy, just like the rest of us. Such care is put into bringing her to life that this Power Girl series continues to be one of the better character studies DC is publishing at the moment. -- Charlie Ridgely

STATIC: SHADOWS OF DAKOTA #7

Static: Shadows of Dakota ends with a confrontation between Static, Ebon and Dr. Lennox, who has been experimenting on various Bang Babies. While I feel that the final fight suffered a bit from its sterile lab setting, this was still a solid issue that delicately framed Lennox with the young gifted child who was killed earlier in the miniseries. I've enjoyed this Static miniseries - it's shown a lot of heart and Nikolas Draper-Ivey's art style has really shown compared to last issue. A big step up from the previous Static series and a good sign for the future of Milestone. -- Christian Hoffer

Rating: 4 out of 5

STEELWORK #6

Steelworks comes to an end having me hope that we see John Henry Irons returns with a series that is ongoing. The latest series focusing on this Man of Steel had some issues, specifically when it comes to its villains, but had enough gas to warrant Superman fans, and DC Comics fans in general, to give it a look. Some interesting ideas were shown off in how Irons was hoping to protect Metropolis versus the Super Family, and the final issue gives us some big and bright moments for Metropolis' heroes across the board. TITANS: BEAST WORLD #1

Titans: Beast World, the latest DC Comics crossover, is most assuredly worth your time and feels like a breath of fresh air in an industry that can often rely too much on company-wide stories. Taylor and Reis are both performing at their best in Beast World #1. For fans of the Titans and DC's legacy characters in general, this feels like the comic book crossover bound to give those characters their day in the sun. The Titans represent a perfect mix of down-to-earth storytelling and the "gods walking amongst men" feel that the DC heroes exude in these pages, suggesting an incredible crossover ahead. -- Evan Valentine

Marvel #1

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN GANG WAR: FIRST STRIKE #1

Introductory issues for events often provide a tough road for creators as they serve many, often conflicting purposes. The Amazing Spider-Man Gang War: First Strike is tasked with catching readers up on recent events in Amazing Spider-Man while establishing threads both for the core series and nearly a half-dozen tie-ins. Yet the writers and artists involved manage to make this one-shot a satisfying, if busy and exposition-heavy introduction to the very fun status quo of Amazing Spider-Man and a crossover that's ready to unleash some of that series' best historical elements with lots of streetlevel heroes and villains slugging it out all over New York. Once one looks past the expository dialogue restating recent events and occasionally odd jumps between characters, there's plenty of meat on the bones of First Strike. Even readers of Amazing Spider-Man will find themselves in for several big shocks as the power dynamics of this sprawling gang war alter themselves more than once. What's most impressive is how that scale is displayed with so many bosses and vigilantes filling the space. The set up for this chaotic event is abundantly tantalizing and First Strike walks the line as both a catch-up for new readers and entertaining addition to the story. -- Chase Magnett

CAPTAIN AMERICA #3

There are fantastic ideas sprinkled throughout this Captain America series, and focusing on any one of them could probably result in a good tale about the Star Spangled Man. But putting all of them at the center of the narrative has turned the entire thing into a confusing mess. There are a few pages in this issue dedicated to talking trash about Nazis, and that is awesome. It's also, unfortunately, the only enjoyable sequence in the whole thing. -- Charlie Ridgely

HOWARD THE DUCK #1

Marvel is celebrating Howard the Duck's 50th anniversary in style with Howard the Duck #1, a one-shot that reunites Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones, the creative team behind both of the Howard the Duck series that launched in 2015 (it was a weird year) remains the best thing done with the duck since creator Steve Gerber stopped writing him. While Zdarsky and Quinones' contribute only the frame story to this What If-like anthology, it's still the best part of the book. Quinones's linework is tight and his characters are energetic and emotive. Zdarsky's humor is still sharp and the perfect tone for Howard the Duck, including the recurring sad Spider-Man gag, back from their previous run. The Peeper is the best new character of the year, and Zdarsky applies just the right amount of pressure to the fourth, not quite breaking it all the way as a Deadpool comic might, but gently prodding it enough that readers in the know get the joke. Dan Kibblesmith and Annie Wu provide the best What If story, imagining what might have been if Howard the Duck had won his presidential bid back in the 1970s. Wu's artwork is always great, and colorist Ian Herring manages to walk the line between '70s retro and modern well enough that the atmosphere is right without feeling like a total throwback. Through an alien invasion, Kibblesmith's story becomes a clever metaphor for how Hollywood scoops up niche IP, as Marvel Comics once was, and sanitizes and streamlines them for mass appeal, a process to which Howard himself is anathema. The satire might be more biting if the call wasn't coming from inside the House of Mouse, but even if this critique's teeth have been filed and smooth, it's still easy enough to appreciate how well it's built, as well as the surprise guest appearance by another of Gerber's creations that seems similarly allergic to adaptation. The remaining stories both imagine Howard on traditional Marvel teams, the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy. There are some thematic connections between Howard and the mutants, both being ostracized (though Howard isn't regularly hunted), but the story mostly feels like a mild excuse to have Howard share panels with some fan-favorite characters. The Guardians of the Galaxy story at least feels like an alternate ending to a plot from the Zdarsky/Quinones run and also digs up some Gerber deep-cuts. Altogether, it's a fine tribute to Marvel's most misanthropic fowl. -- Jamie Lovett

LUKE CAGE: GANG WAR #1

The first half of Luke Cage: Gang War #1 is entirely focused on describing how difficult it is to be the mayor of New York City (something any New Yorker would readily acknowledge) going to frankly silly extremes to showcase how Luke Cage is bound by his job and the Anti-Vigilante Act. Yet in the issue's second half, it seems that the job involves little more than taking tedious phone calls about whatever is currently annoying New Yorkers. It's such a contrast that it's difficult to accept they belong in the same story, especially as Luke's adventure quickly boils down to a list of uninspired superhero cliches, including a new costume and new team. The refusal to wed Luke's status as mayor to this story as anything more than his annoying civilian job not only misses many opportunities to do something new, but also makes the story itself comical given the obvious demands and scrutiny of that specific job. When this fundamental flaw is combined with an atrocious new costume straight out of a BDSM magazine, excessive expository dialogue, and Silver Age action tropes it's all too much to tolerate. Let's just hope the rest of "Gang War" gets off to a better start than Luke Cage. -- Chase Magnett

MARVEL ZOMBIES: BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD #2

Marvel Zombies: Black, White & Blood #2 doesn't share the same twisted mean spiritedness of the original Marvel Zombies line, but it does feel dabble in a few tropes other Marvel horror books and various zombie media has delved into. You've got the guy going on one last mission knowing he's already been bitten (Warpath & the X-Force) and an attempt at survival with a cruel twist (Mr. Fantastic). But there's also a shockingly optimistic story hidden midway through the book that feels like a short reprieve from the otherwise dour series. If Marvel Zombies is your bag, this series continues to provide. -- Connor Casey

MOON KNIGHT #29

Moon Knight's days may be numbered, but everyone's favorite Fist of Khonshu is going down swinging. Artist Federico Sabbatini and colorist Rachelle Rosenberg are deserving of so much praise, capturing the grittiness and brutality of the battle with Black Spectre, and on multiple fronts. While the Moon Knight sequences are understandably great, Moony's supporting cast really gets some well deserved shine, especially Reese and Zodiac. While you have an idea of where things are headed due to the arc's title, Jed MacKay still find ways to throw in a twist or two to keep you on your toes, including a well laid fake out that worked all too well. It remains to be seen if next issue's answers will make that last reveal hit like it needs to, but as an issue unto itself, Moon Knight #29 was a home run, and next month can't get here soon enough. -- Matthew Aguilar

Ms. Marvel's first foray into mutantdom concludes in a manner that's fast-paced, but filled with heart. Iman Vellani and Sabir Pirzada's script is as breezy and lively as ever, but still has a fun fundamental understanding of who Kamala is. The art from Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham, especially when the visuals of the issue get truly larger-than-life, carry that energy even further. PREDATOR VS. WOLVERINE #3

Writer Benjamin Percy delivers easily the wildest piece of this crossover, with a sequence that not only changes Wolverine's history in a unique way but which manages the kind of galaxy-brained idea that only comics can pull off. A trio of artist put their fingerprints on this one too, and while Ken Lashley and Kei Zama's segments are great (Zama's easily the best), the bulk of it falls on artist Hayden Sherman. These pages in Predator vs. Wolverine don't quite live up to the other two, which makes it stand out a bit, but Sherman manages to take the above-mentioned galaxy-brained idea and really make it work. This series remains a winner and Percy continues to prove he's the best modern Wolverine writer. -- Spencer Perry

For a book that had plenty of ups and downs through its first three issues, the climax is both engaging and action-packed. STAR WARS: OBI-WAN KENOBI #3

Having successfully rescued a young Leia from her captors, Obi-Wan and his new companion aim to find Bail Organa, but the inherent attention that comes with a reluctant Jedi traipsing through the galaxy far, far away makes them a target for new threats, which includes Lord Vader himself. From a narrative standpoint, this chapter in the journey is much more subtle and more of a literal progression of the characters, so while the narrative momentum is a bit more literal, the artwork allows the book to be a bit more moody and self-reflexive. Given that this chapter features Obi-Wan's first meeting with his former apprentice, it was a pivotal moment for the character, especially since his last collision with Anakin saw him become the victor while this bout was much more defeating. As compared to the previous issues, the emphasis of the artwork in this chapter is much more on the emotions of the characters, accurately reflecting their inner struggles, though it only manages to replicate barely the effectiveness of the live-action series, so even with the compelling artwork, it still fails to do anything that the TV show didn't already accomplish. -- Patrick Cavanaugh

X-MEN BLUE: ORIGINS #1

It's the retcon readers have been waiting for ever since Uncanny X-Men #428 revealed Azazel to be Nightcrawler's father and writer Simon Spurrier takes this detour from Uncanny Spider-Man to not only amend continuity but do so in a surprisingly satisfying package. It's no easy feat to make rewriting past stories interesting in themselves and Spurrier utilizes Nightcrawler's (adorably drawn) Bamf-on-his-shoulder as a narrator to frame the story and offer some meta-humor well. While the narrator may be cute in appearance and speech, the artistic team on X-Men Blue: Origins ensures that the many action sequences and diverse setting portrayed in flashbacks are suitably thrilling. Grand castles and viciously fast portrayals of bloodshed ensure that so many presentations of prior comics capture what was best in those stories (as it often wasn't the plotting). All of this allows for a story driven by a retcon to retain reader's attention for the quality of its telling, and that really pays off in the final few pages. Because at the heart of the original mistake was a betrayal of the emotional truths readers have found in the character Nightcrawler. What occurs in this reconciliation--one that occurs literally and metaphorically--is a recognition of what makes these characters inspiring and makes this story worth telling for its own sake. Watching creators weave a widely panned mistake into a compelling comic book is the sort of magic that can only happen in the exceedingly strange history of Marvel Comics. -- Chase Magnett

BRZRKR: FALLEN EMPIRE #1

BRZRKR: Fallen Empire #1 is quite honestly a fantastic comic. a chapter from B's distant past, the book is told not by B but by Asana, an old woman who is the last of her people, come to a reclusive group of monks to beg them to record the story of her people's downfall. That story ends up being an epic tale about B, a kingdom, manipulation, love, and betrayal. It's an elegantly-written story with equally elegant art that also never shies away from the brutal violence BRZRKR is known for. There's also a bit of a twist at the end that I genuinely did not quite see coming which makes the story all the more interesting. Crave #1 is as sexy as it is tense, a coming-of-age story shrouded in a story made for an older generation. This comic is one where the story comes first, at the risk of depthless characters that find themselves far from three-dimensional. Luckily for Llovet and readers alike, it's a risk that pays off this this premiere given just how strong the other pieces of the puzzle are. DARKWING DUCK #10

While bringing back the Justice Ducks has been an unwelcome reunion for the Terror That Flaps In The Night, it's surprising that its a reunion that brings Dynamite's take on Darkwing Duck to a close. The strengths and weaknesses of the series persist into its final issue, with the comic acting as a mirror to the original animated series, but little else. The finale could have been bigger, but it worked well as a goodbye to the universe if this is the last episode by bringing so many characters back to the scene. As with the first issue of Edenwood, the series has clearly had its entire world thought out to a T by creator Tony S. Daniel's pencils, with colors by Leonardo Paciarotti, remain the main selling point of course, with some wild character designs and unique looks that you're not going to find anywhere else. KAYA #13

Kaya #13 returns to the series' central quest in media res and introduces readers to a new companion as Kaya and Jin travel through a pirate's dungeon bound to thrill fans of D&D. The opening sequence is a bold thesis statement for everything this series does so well - filled with inventive traps and colorful threats addressed with creativity (and occasional humor) by a band of eclectic, lovable heroes. While most of the issue is composed of this introductory action sequence, it scratches the itch for wonder, suspense, and thrills before delivering the necessary exposition for the third arc's core story. QUEST #4

On the one hand, Quest's sudden expansion of its main party has transformed the story from an Avatar: The Last Airbender style of quest into something more akin to a D&D campaign (complete with a mage who doubles as a bard). The pacing continues to show the scale of just how massive the journey and while it appears we've reached out first boss fight, we still have every indication this story will be treated as an epic quest rather than something that can be snuffed out with a quick finale in its sixth, eighth or tenth issue. To see where a character like Gabi started and how her story becomes such a linchpin of the book is a testament to James Tynion IV's ability to slowly and methodically evolve the book's cast, and when they step up to the plate they command the spotlight as a result. SWAN SONGS #5

"The End of... Anhedonia" is set entirely in a single therapy session, which might make Swan Songs #5 sound like the dullest entry in the series to date, but an impressive application of fumetti effects by artist Alex Eckman-Lawn and metaphorical construction of the protagonist's mindscape makes it a highlight in this already impressive series. The issue opens with a man describing his experience with anhedonia (i.e. the inability to experience joy) before delving into his trance therapy composed of pencil sketches, photography, and various other styles. These are used to dramatic effect in reflecting perception as a simple line drawing of a face is fractalized into its many underlying elements. The overlapping styles portray a depression-like fog in a revealing fashion as the specifics of a house and childhood experiences begin to feel universal. Colors are utilized to great effect and dull beiges, browns and grays contrast the discovery of new shades in the process of therapy. It serves to expose the vibrant inner life of its subject and reflect the possibilities found when addressing mental illness in an issue bound to resonate with those who have encountered similar struggles. -- Chase Magnett

WILD'S END #6

Wild's End #6 is an exercise in how keeping things simple can allow the important moment to shine. Dan Abnett and INJ Culbard's cozy alien invasion story has had a calm demeanor and steady pace throughout, building toward this earned and explosive finale. Instead of thrusting the reader face-first into the cataclysm, these moments are framed from a distance, allowing the contrast of colors and the scale of the looming alien threats to come through. That bright yellow light popping off the subtle blue background is as memorable a moment as I've recently seen in comics. This approach also allows for certain other storytelling tricks, including a little sleight of hand that lets the reader believe certain characters are in one place when they are, in fact, elsewhere and calibrating for when the story pulls out further, emphasizing this struggle is but one skirmish in a much larger war. It's a story of sacrifices made with calm reason and of people from various walks of life banding together to do what must be done when there's little other choice left to them and they are reminded that, ultimately, they're all they've got. We can only hope that the ending is hinting at more stories to come in this world that Abnett and Culbard have created. Storytelling with this level of quiet confidence is all too rare. - Jamie Lovett

Christopher Nolan Says Zack Snyder's Watchmen Was Ahead of Its Time https://comicbook.com/movies/news/christopher-nolan-says-zack-snyders-watchmen-was-ahead-of-its-time/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 15:31:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 2cb45636-9a81-47d4-b90e-eb900a1dfc8a

Christopher Nolan was instrumental in recruiting director Zack Snyder for Man of Steel, his third comic book movie. In a new feature on Snyder in The Hollywood Reporter, the Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight director admits that he has more affection for Snyder's second comic book movie -- 2009's Watchmen -- than most probably do. In a brief comment included as part of a larger look at Snyder's career and influence, Nolan said that Watchmen was "ahead of its time," noting that while the movie wasn't a massive hit, it may have performed differently had it come out in a post-MCU cinematic landscape.

Snyder's Rebel Moon series, which already has video games and comic books attached to it, will launch at Netflix soon, and so ahead of the release of the first movie in that series, THR looked back at some of the biggest and most definitive projects in Snyder's career. That's where they got Nolan to chime in.

"I've always believed Watchmen was ahead of its time," Nolan told THR. "The idea of a superhero team, which it so brilliantly subverts, wasn't yet a thing in movies. It would have been fascinating to see it released post-Avengers."

This is a variation on a conversation that fans and critics have had for years. While Watchmen is widely regarded as one of the best American comics ever published, it can be difficult for casual readers to get all of the references and nuances, since so much of the book is reliant on the tropes and traditions of superhero comics. That is not to say that Watchmen doesn't stand on its own, but it certainly has more to say for audience members who can parse the references.

Snyder's Watchmen was the result of decades of attempts to get the comic adapted for the screen. Other filmmakers, including Terry Gilliam and Paul Greengrass, had come and go -- as had writers including Batman's Sam Hamm. It was long considered "unfilmable," until Snyder came along and made a movie that divided fans and critics, but was visually impressive and more closely adapted the source material than prior drafts had been trying for.

Watchmen was one of a number of Snyder's movies -- including Dawn of the Dead, Sucker Punch, and Justice League -- to get extended director's cuts on DVD. You can stream the movie now on Max.

Zack Snyder Would Only Consider DC Return to do Dark Knight Returns Adaptation https://comicbook.com/movies/news/batman-zack-snyder-dark-knight-returns-consider-dc-return/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 15:16:00 +0000 Aaron Perine e0fa55a3-f272-4206-954f-1d917076ae5d

Former DC director Zack Snyder says that there's only one DC project that he would return for. In a new Hollywood Reporter feature, the Zack Snyder's Justice League director explained how an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns might lure him back to the blue brand. Right now, he's busy with Rebel Moon and a host of other projects over at Netflix. But, a "true representation of the graphic novel" might be enough to see him revisit Batman on the big screen. A lot of fans would be receptive to that. After all, his take on The Dark Knight during Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and the ensuing team-up movie were heavily influenced by Frank Miller's work.

There's really only one tiny problem. Snyder is very busy with all of that stuff over at Netflix and current DC Films heads James Gunn and Peter Safran's dance cards are similarly full. In particular, The Suicide Squad director's already got Matt Reeves on tab for The Batman Part II. If that weren't enough, there's also a Brave and the Bold project in the works as well that will center a version of The Caped Crusader a bit earlier in his career than The Dark Knight Returns. So, that's a lot of Batman to go around. Still, it has to be gratifying for fans of the director to hear that there would still be something that could bring him back.

Could Ben Affleck Come Back For The Dark Knight Returns?

batman-v-superman-affleck-1225702.jpg

The idea of Ben Affleck in the popular story isn't lost on the fandom. Kevin Smith talked about the possibility of the star coming back for The Dark Knight Returns on his podcast this year. The longtime comic book fan and creator told fans that it just makes a bit too much sense. Just this year, Affleck had a part in The Flash as Bruce Wayne again. He's said he wouldn't return. But, anything is possible in a multiverse...

"I know Ben loves The Dark Knight Returns in a big bad way," Smith said. "Like most of us do, but like... all through [filming] Chasing Amy he read that on the floor of my condo; he slept on the couch and s**t. And he was always like 'Why can't somebody do this as a f*****g movie?"

"And you know, when Zack [Snyder] did BvS, he got damn close: he got to wear the outfit [Bat-Armor] and s**t, there were elements of Dark Knight Returns... So I can't imagine if somebody backed up a money truck ten years from now, and said to a f*****g nearly sixty-year-old Ben Affleck 'Do you want to do The Dark Knight Returns?' He might say 'Yeah,' and that would be glorious," he added. "But for right now he had to put the cowl away, and he seems to have had a good time doing it."

Frank Miller Shows DCEU Love For Adapting Parts Of His Work

the-dark-knight-returns-1209101.jpg

Not that long ago, Frank Miller had some nice things to say about the DCEU using elements from The Dark Knight Returns. During an appearance on The Beard and The Bold Movie Podcast, the comics creator said that it took him a while to warm up to seeing those parts of his work on the big screen. But, he's become appreciative over time.

"I really gotta say about that-a few years have gone by since all this started, okay? And at first, my reaction was to be very territorial and all that. And now I've kind of sat back and with a much deeper breath and longer view on the whole thing and all I can say is: this is great," Miller told The Beard and The Bald Movie Podcast.

He added, "I mean, I came in and I came up with my idea for The Dark Knight Returns and that basically was the big splash I made, which started my whole career going. And since then I've seen the two fields collaborate back and forth. I benefited greatly from Dark Knight Returns and so have they and continue to. And it can only be looked at as a healthy relationship."

Is Dave Bautista Teasing DCU Talks With James Gunn? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dave-bautista-joining-dc-universe-tease-james-gunn-instagram/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 04:57:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt aa135d6c-85d9-4ef6-8d13-c9f560e2f074

Since working together on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Dave Bautista and James Gunn have become close friends. Even though their working days on the Guardians have now come to a close, it looks like the two may be reunited sooner than expected. Bautista recently shared a photo from what appears to be the lot of DC Studios, leading some to believe the actor may be in ongoing talks with the new movie studios and Gunn, who's now sitting atop DC Studios along with Peter Safran.

On his Instagram Stories, Bautista shared a photo of himself sitting in a parking spot reserved for Gunn before tagging him in it. Gunn then shared it adding, "Hey [Dave Bautista] I can't believe you're parking your body in my space."

Naturally, the interaction quickly led to plenty of speculation, with many going to frequent fancasting options like Bane. Others started lobbying for the actor to play Hugo Strange, with some even fancasting the Knock at the Cabin star as Brainiac in the upcoming Superman: Legacy.

What is Superman: Legacy going to be about?

When Superman: Legacy picks up, movie-goers will see a world already full of superheroes, and Superman is already in the midst of his crime-fighting career. The film is set to feature Lex Luthor and Eve Teschmacher as antagonists, and rumors also point toward the potential inclusion of Brainiac as well.

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned." Along with David Corenswet's Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane, the cast includes Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as the mass-shifting Metamorpho, and Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as The Authority's The Engineer.

The DC Universe officially kicks off with Creature Commandos, which has yet to set a release date, and Superman: Legacy, which enters theaters July 11, 2025.

DC Teases the Secret Origin of Poison Ivy https://comicbook.com/dc/news/dc-secret-origin-poison-ivy-february-2024/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 02:11:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson a5901eb7-946f-4bd7-b4d7-079defd40523

As a hero, villain, and member of the Birds of Prey and the Gotham City Sirens, Poison Ivy has had a unique DC trajectory. More so than most, Ivy has been established with a few wildly different origin stories -- and it sounds like a new one is on the way. According to DC's recently-released February 2024 solicitations, the upcoming Poison Ivy #19 will bring about "the one true secret origin" of the character. The issue, from G. Willow Wilson and Marcio Takara, will apparently convey Ivy's "heartbreaking and historic" origin as told by herself.

Based on this description, it sounds like Poison Ivy #19 might not exactly match the previous origins Ivy had. Her initial Bronze Age origin involved her getting powers after surviving a murder attempt from Marc Legrand, while her post-Crisis on Infinite Earths origin revealed her parentage, as well as the abuse and manipulation she suffered at the hands of Dr. Jason Woodrue.

What Is DC's Poison Ivy About?

In Poison Ivy, Pamela Isley has been a lot of things in her life. A living god, a super-villain, an activist, a scientist, and dead. In a new body that she didn't ask for and with a renewed sense of purpose, Ivy leaves Gotham and sets out to complete her greatest work-a gift to the world that will heal the damage dealt to it...by ending humanity.

"I don't think you can lock her down," Wilson explained in an interview with DC.com earlier this year. "I think her goals are noble--she really does love and care about planet Earth. Her motives are pure, but her methods can be shocking and inhumane. And it's that juxtaposition that I really love to explore. You look around and, in many ways, large and small, we're feeling the effects of a changing planet. There's a lot of tension and anxiety about that. She shares those feelings, but she acts on them in a villainous way. She's grown over the course of the last year. I think she's kind of taken the fight to the main bad actors in destroying the Earth rather than kind of lashing out at humanity as a whole. There are villains who are evil, their methods are evil, their motives are evil, they're evil top to bottom, and she's definitely not one of those."

DC Gives Alan Scott's Green Lantern a Heartbreaking New Origin https://comicbook.com/comics/news/dc-alan-scott-green-lantern-new-origin/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 23:17:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson fd94a8f7-39c0-4c5b-a295-016bc8e1eb0e

The Dawn of DC initiative has been filled with surprises, remixing the lore of many of DC's iconic characters for a new era. One of the latest additions to that initiative is Alan Scott / Green Lantern, whose history has changed radically since he was first introduced in the Golden Age of Comics. As explained in the latest issue of Alan Scott: The Green Lantern, one key element of his superhero status quo -- the very lantern he uses to wield his superpowers -- has a revamped origin story. Spoilers for Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #2 from Tim Sheridan, Cian Tormey, and Matt Herms below! Only look if you want to know!

The majority of the issue follows Alan inside of Arkham Asylum, back when it was used to "convert" people of different sexualities and gender identities. Alan, who entered the asylum by choice following the death of his lover, forms a friendship with a transgender woman named Billie. While eating at the asylum's mess hall, Billie presents Alan with a present -- a green railroad lantern, which she built during her time in metal shop. Soon after, Billie is taken by asylum staff and lobotomized, in an attempt to turn her into "Mr. Billings." This traumatic act inspires Alan to break out of the asylum, using Billie's lantern as a guide.

Who Is DC's Billie?

In a roundabout way, this new origin story for Alan's lantern pays tribute to a portion of Golden Age history. An old asylum patient named "Old Billings" very briefly appears in All American Comics #16, Alan's very first comic story. In that story, working on the lantern essentially helps Billings achieve personal enlightenment and restore his memories -- a heartbreaking opposite of Billie's fate in this new story.

What Is Alan Scott: The Green Lantern About?

Through a twist in the timeline, Alan Scott: The Green Lantern revisits and recontextualizes the origins of the first Green Lantern through the lens of our modern understanding of the man. The story, which begins in the 1930s, is about an old flame - the kind that burns eternal - and the sometimes head-on, single-track collision of our personal and professional lives. This is Alan's coming-of-age, in which he must embrace the man he is, to become the hero he's meant to be. In the end, he'll have gained a greater understanding of himself and his gifts - as he unlocks a new, previously unknown ability that could make him the most powerful Green Lantern in existence!

Did DC Just Kill Off Two Fan-Favorite Characters? https://comicbook.com/comics/news/dc-kill-off-arsenal-roy-harper-cheshire-green-arrow-beast-world/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 22:00:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson f8bd7ca3-3143-44da-821c-cbb9ae852de1

Green Arrow's first arc has come to a close, as the series has sought to try to rewrite and recontextualize some elements of the Arrow Fam's history. The first six issues have provided some major developments with ramifications on the larger DC Universe, and the book's latest issue hammered that home even further, possibly teasing the demise of two surprising characters. Spoilers for Green Arrow #6 from Joshua Williamson, Sean Izaakse, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Troy Peteri below! Only look if you want to know!

The bulk of the issue concerns Oliver Queen / Green Arrow getting to the bottom of Malcolm Merlyn's machinations against him, as well as reuniting with Dinah Lance / Black Canary. Along the way, Oliver learns that Merlyn made a deal with Amanda Waller to set his plan in motion, but it is not make clear why she is targeting the Arrow Fam so closely. The issue's epilogue takes that even further, showing Roy Harper / Arsenal and Jade Nguyen / Cheshire reluctantly working together once again, trying to snuff out Waller's plans. Once Roy realizes that Waller is also involved with the Titans' newly-launched Beast World predicament, both he and Jade get shot by Waller, who is flanked by Peacemaker and Peacewrecker. While the ending seems to hint at Jade and Roy's demise, the promise of the next Green Arrow storyline being "The Hunt for Arsenal" could mean that the story is going to get more complex.

What Is Titans: Beast World About?

Amanda Waller, DC's Queen of sinister operations, will play a key role Titans: Beast World. As the Super Heroes and Super-Villains of the DCU struggle to remain human, "The Wall" will seize this opportunity to rid humanity of metahumans once and for all, and at any cost. Furthermore, Waller is not above using those same metahumans to achieve her goals.

"It grew organically," Titans writer Tom Taylor recently told ComicBook.com. "It was actually, I had elements of Beast World in my original pitch for Titans, where I wanted to take them in a year's time. So when this idea came about, that there could be an event at the end of the year and it could be Titan-centric, we were like, 'Well, I think I've got the idea for that,' and it just grew from there. What was great about it was knowing that we were always heading to this event meant that I could seed this entire event in the first five issues of Titans. It doesn't have to come into play and suddenly stop the momentum on a story. This is the story that we've been building to from issue one of Titans, so that's exciting."

What Is the New Green Arrow Series About?

In Green Arrow, the Emerald Archer is lost, and it will take Oliver Queen's whole family to find him! But dangerous forces are determined to keep them apart at any cost! Spinning out of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, Green Arrow by DC architect Joshua Williamson (Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, Superman) and artist Sean Izaakse (Thunderbolts) is an action-packed adventure across the DCU that sets the stage for major stories in 2023! The series was previously upgraded to twelve issues, doubling the previous order of six.

"It's been a blast writing this series," Williamson explained in a post on his Substack. "A dream come true. My goal for this series to tell a kind of "Hush" level story with Ollie and his family. We're only 3 issues in and we have a lot of characters to bring in for this Arrow Family reunion.'

Robert Pattinson's Batman Suit Confirmed for Arkham Knight in New Trailer https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/batman-arkham-knight-robert-pattinson-batsuit-trailer/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 18:25:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon cfbb95fc-2027-45d5-bd96-9ae38a007cd5

Rocksteady Studios is officially bringing Robert Pattinson's Batsuit from The Batman to the Arkham games, a new trailer released this week confirmed. The suit which stands as the most up-to-date theatrical version of Batman will be added to the games first as part of the Batman: Arkham Trilogy which is scheduled to release exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on December 1st. The Batsuit from The Batman will come to other platforms, too, but the release of the suit will apparently be a platform exclusive for the Nintendo Switch's trilogy for an unknown amount of time before it's brought elsewhere.

Nintendo put out a new trailer for the Batman: Arkham Trilogy this week to give us our first official look at Pattinson's Batman suit in the games. It's not technically our first ever look at the suit since the outfit was added to the Epic Games Store version of Batman: Arkham Knight previously before being taken away, but this is the first time that anyone's shown it off to this degree when it was actually supposed to be talked about.

The Batman's Suit in the Batman: Arkham Trilogy

You can check out Pattinson's Batsuit from The Batman in the trailer above which was shared by Nintendo this week. To get the best and clearest look at it, skip ahead to the very end of the video where it says that the suit will be available as a free part of the Batman: Arkham Trilogy. The same trailer has a disclaimer at the end which clarifies that the suit will only be available within the Batman: Arkham Knight game which makes up a third of the trilogy. That same disclaimer mentions again that the suit will be available on other platforms at a later date.

Both of those points in the disclaimer make sense based on what we've seen previously and what's known about the release plans for the game. Back when the suit was first leaked for the Arkham games, it was available via the Epic Games Store version of Batman: Arkham Knight with players actually able to access it in-game. It didn't appear on any other platforms, however, and the mistake was soon rectified.

batman-robert-pattinson-suit.jpg

All that took place on October 26th which was just under two weeks after the Batman: Arkham Trilogy was originally supposed to release on the Nintendo Switch before it got delayed, so perhaps we'll see a two-week period of exclusivity or so for the new Batsuit in the trilogy before it comes to other games. It also makes sense that the suit would be an exclusive first for the Switch. Given that it's a free part of that trilogy, one would assume it'd be free for the other platforms, too, but if love Pattinson's Batman enough that you just can't wait to play as him, buying the Batman: Arkham Trilogy on the Switch is your only way to do so early.

The Batman: Arkham Trilogy releases for the Nintendo Switch on December 1st with Pattinson's The Batman suit included. The suit should come to other platforms at a later date, but a specific date has not yet been announced.

Batman: The Penguin's Ex-Wife Reveal Puts A Dark Twist on a Classic DC Character https://comicbook.com/dc/news/dc-the-penguin-wife-lisa-st-claire-explained-young-love-romance-comics/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 18:02:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 1bf79b06-ad05-4554-af12-bc20b5edac82

The Penguin series by DC writer Tom King has taken readers on a fascinating journey inside the life and mind of Oswald Cobblepot, revealing new dimensions to one of Batman's most dangerous and enduring foes. The Penguin #4 continues to deepen the intrigue, as Oswald is forced to call upon the one person in the world he actually fears: his ex-wife.

(SPOILERS) During the course of the story "The Ex" we see Penguin travel to Las Vegas to the St. Claire Casino, where we meet his ex-wife, Lisa St. Claire.

Who Is DC's Lisa St. Claire?

dc-young-love-romance-comics-featuring-lisa-st-claire.jpg
(Photo: DC Comics)

If you don't know the name that's okay: Lisa St. Claire is a reference to a pretty obscure DC character - one of the featured protagonists in the Young Love romance comic series, which began with Crestwood/Prize's series in 1947, and eventually became a DC Comics title running from 1963-1977. "The Life and Loves of Lisa St. Claire" was a segment DC focused on: it depicted Lisa St. Claire as a wealthy and beautiful socialite ("Spoiled rich girl Lisa" as one synopsis put it), constantly caught up in romantic intrigue and torrid (if not doomed) love affairs.

It was the sort of pulpy salacious material that eventually killed the romance comics genre when the Comics Code Authority (and others) started imposing hard restrictions on material viewed as exposing minors to overly adult themes.

Clearly, Tom King was a fan who remembers those old DC romance books because the version of Lisa St. Claire who we meet in The Penguin seems like a definite homage - albeit with far more modern edge.

Who Is Penguin's Ex-Wife Lisa St. Claire?

batman-penguin-wife-who-is-dc-lisa-st-claire-young-love-comics.jpg
(Photo: DC Comics)

In The Penguin, Lisa is introduced as someone who is able to play the chess game of crime and wealth/empire-building just as well as Oswald Cobblepot. The two exchange pleasantries; Lisa arranges the best accommodations for him in her casino and the former spouses agree on dinner - but of course, it's all a front. Penguin and Lisa don't even make it through drinks before their factions collide. Penguin spent one issue coercing an entire former special ops team into taking down the St. Claire Casino. It turns out Lisa got wind of the attack and flipped one of Penguin's team to her side, making the trip to Vegas a trap from the very beginning. Oswald ends up taking three gunshots to the abdomen from his scorned ex-wife and is out of commission for weeks.

...But who really had the upper hand?

The epilogue of Penguin #4 paints a scene of the most twisted bad romance in comics: Penguin had been testing his ex-wife to see if she was still his equal (or more), which she clearly is. He uses their... unique connection (not to mention Lisa's classic penchant for bad romances) to make her his Consigliere, "someone to advise and consent," as he fights to reclaim his crown as Gotham City's top crime boss. Together again, it seems like Penguin and the former Mrs. Penguin are a crime power couple that can actually help Oswald reclaim his Empire - from the very same two children his ex-wife helped put into power over him.

Talk about family issues...

Theater Owners Reportedly Worried That Christmas Box Office Depends on Aquaman 2 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/aquaman-2-christmas-box-office-theater-owners-worried/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 15:19:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 9985b109-72a7-4b7c-9acb-2c3761950896

Theater owners are reportedly worried that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is carrying the Christmas box office on its shoulders. A new report from Variety sees midwestern chain Phoenix Theaters echoing some other anxieties from around the country. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might be the best chance at a winter blockbuster and that's nowhere near a sure thing. The last couple of years have brought a reliable big-earner into movie houses across the United States and beyond. Last year, it was Avatar: The Way of Water. Before that Spider-Man: No Way Home swung into view to save the movies. 2020 obviously didn't have that kind of impactful release because most theaters were either closed or at reduced capacity. However, in 2019, (a different world!) there was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to pick up the slack.

Now, in a year with so many big-budget misfires from all around. Napoleon was being celebrated for coming in second this week despite having a steep path back to profitability. To say nothing of other well-documented results from around the studios for most of 2023, it's been a weird year for movies. Barbie, Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Super Marios Bros. Movie aside, there hasn't been a ton to write home about.

(Photo: DC)

Phoenix Theatres owner Cory Jacobson told the outlet, "You can't look at the release schedule between now and the end of the year and find one movie that stands out like 'Avatar' as the big film."

"With one big film, you must stock a lot of show times to meet demands. If it doesn't work out, you end up with a lot of empty show times," added Phoenix Theatres VP Jordan Hohman. "With a more diverse slate of films, we can spread our bets."

Can Aquaman 2 Deliver In Theaters?

aquaman-and-the-lost-kingdom.jpg
(Photo: Warner Bros.)

One prevailing criticism that pops up online frequently is that comic book superhero movies have too much "homework" to keep up with them. (Meanwhile people gladly show up for multiple seasons of their favorite shows on streamers and delight in all the shipping, fan casting, and speculation that all comes with.) For Aquaman, the viewer that might be intimidated is in luck! If you're showing up to see Jason Momoa have a good time, that's what you're going to get. ComicBook.com spoke to director James Wan about the barrier to entry earlier this year.

"Well, Aquaman - even the first film - has always been a very standalone film," Wan explained. "That was always our approach: that it kind of lives in its own world, and that's kind of how we've approached The Lost Kingdom as well. You know, people love Jason Momoa; people love him playing this role; and people love the action visuals of this space and this world."

He continued, "And that's what we're doing: we're taking it to the next level and we are still expanding - and just any fans of Aquaman the character, that love Black Manta, this is the next level and I'm very excited to finally put out there to show them what we've been working on all these years."

What Is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom About?

(Photo: DC Entertainment)

"In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , which arrives in theaters on December 25th, when an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see the return of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Amber Heard as Mera , Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta , and Randall Park as Stephen Shin."

"Jani Zhao will play new character Stingray, Indya Moore will play Karshon, and Vincent Regan will play Atlan, who was previously portrayed by Graham McTavish in Aquaman . Pilou Asbaek has also joined the cast in a mystery role. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is directed by James Wan , with a script from David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick . Producers include Wan and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran."

Titans: Beast World #1 Review: The Next Great DC Comics Crossover https://comicbook.com/comics/news/titans-beast-world-1-review-dc-comics/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 15:00:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 2d2f1a18-5520-46f7-8081-c6282b8c9aa2 Comic book crossovers can be tricky. Marvel, DC, and other comic book companies that focus on caped crusaders can create a story big enough to warrant a miniseries focused on earth-shattering events alongside countless tie-ins dragging characters kicking and screaming into those events. It's why a crossover event needs a sufficiently solid hook to entice readers about how ancillary characters will tie into the main event. Luckily, Titans: Beast World deilvers all of the elements required for a great event.

Titans: Beast World sees the likes of Nightwing, Cyborg, Raven, Beast Boy, Donna Troy, and Starfire taking charge in the face of a Tamaranean threat facing Earth. Led by writer Tom Taylor and artist Ivan Reis, the event lays the groundwork for a world-ending creature known as "The Necrostar" but flips the script and reader expectations in dramatic fashion. As the world has to deal with its denizens--hero, villain, and civilian alike--transforming into beasts, the Titans are forced to take on new enemies while tackling one creature that hits a little too close to home.

DC Comics has always had serious strengths when it comes to its "legacy characters." Dick Grayson's Batman, Wally West's Flash, Kyle Rayner's Green Lantern, and Jaime Reyes' Blue Beetle are just a few examples of legacy figures that have given the comic book publisher some of its best stories of the past. Taylor and Reis have taken the opportunity to put the Titans, former sidekicks now on the frontline of Earth's superheroes, to be the group that everyone else looks to. Taylor is clearly a big fan of the DC universe, which has been apparent in previous runs on Injustice, Nightwing, and Superman: Son of Kal-El to name only a few. That passion bleeds into his character work here, as the heroes' characterization is at its best.

Luckily, Taylor is paired up with Reis, a penciler who has made his name creating some of the biggest comic book events in DC's modern history. From Blackest Night to "Trinity War" and "The Sinestro Corps War," Reis' big, bold take on superheroes makes them seem larger than life and goes a long way in selling the Titans as the team of heroes who can logically surpass the Justice League. Reis has perfected his emotional beats, capturing high stress and emotion on characters' faces, but is also able to capture some mind-bending creations that are large enough to be considered too much for the combined forces of DC's heroes.

Beast World has more than a few moving pieces when it comes to its set up, and while it isn't perfect, it really works once it gets going. Taylor is able to present an original concept for the creature that has been unleashed, while also presenting some interesting ideas on how the Necrostar was able to gain its freedom. Seeing humanity attempt to further explore the galaxy in the face of constant alien incursions of DC Comics' Earth is an interesting twist, even when it goes awry here. The weakest aspect of the first issue is the inclusion of "Dr. Hate," which honestly isn't much of a strike against Beast World as Taylor takes the opportunity to take a shot at the ridiculous villain. Hate's inclusion might seem too out-of-nowhere for those who haven't been following the DC universe closely, but he gives enough worthwhile exposition to let readers know as much as they need.

James Gunn Debunks Latest DC Universe Casting Rumors https://comicbook.com/movies/news/james-gunn-debunks-dcu-casting-rumors/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 04:11:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 5b78a7ec-f605-492e-8ca9-8f02b4c3c89e

James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe is gaining momentum, with the promise of bringing a number of beloved and lesser-known characters to life onscreen. As the ensemble cast of the saga's first film, Superman: Legacy, has begun to take shape, there have been a slew of casting rumors about other potential superhero characters. In a recent post to Threads, Gunn directly contradicted the latest string of rumors, revealing that he and Safran "are never going to cast roles without scripts," perhaps to give the potential actor proof of concept for their character.

"I get asked about rumors of various actors being cast in various roles every day," Gunn writes. "Just a blanket rule to keep in mind while assessing whether these rumors have any truth to them (99% of the time they're false) - we are never going to cast roles without scripts."

The Suicide Squad Star Joel Kinnaman Is Ready for a DC Return (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-suicide-squad-joel-kinnaman-wants-return-dc-universe-villain/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 01:00:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt f64e22fa-155b-4f0d-a73a-e8e5bedbf4f2

Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flagg was killed off during the events of The Suicide Squad, one of the final movies in the DC Extended Universe. Now that DC Studios is established and is building up the new DC Universe, Kinnaman tells us he'd love to return as an entirely different character.

"I think [I'd want to play] an all-new character," Kinnaman tells ComicBook.com. "I haven't talked to James [Gunn] in a while but maybe I'll come in and do a nasty villain."

Because the importance of the multiverse to all things DC, the rollout of the DCU has been slightly complicated. Accoring to Gunn, DCU canon officially begins with 2024's Creature Commandos, even though some actors from the DCEU will be returning.

"Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year - a sort of aperitif to the DCU - & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that," Gunn clarified on Threads earlier this year. "It's a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think its okay to be confused on what's happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet."

Then there's the likes of Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman in the DCEU, and is very likely returning for an entirely new role in the DCU. According to hints from the Aquaman star himself, it's increasingly likely the actor will play Lobo at some point in the future of the new superhero franchise.

"Well, everyone knows I'm a comic book fan. The comic I collected the most, and I have every comic there is... you can do your research and find out what it is," Momoa hinted with us when asked if his "dream DC project" would be a Lobo film or series.

"I think with Peter Safran and Mr. Gunn at the helm now at DC, I'm very excited about that," Momoa said in a prior chat with ET Canada. "There are a lot of cool things that are going to be coming up and one of my dreams come true will be happening under their watch, so stay tuned."

The DC Universe officially kicks off with Creature Commandos, which has yet to set a release date, and Superman: Legacy, which enters theaters July 11, 2025.

DC Multiverse Steel Figure From Reign Of The Supermen Is Up For Pre-Order https://comicbook.com/dc/news/dc-multiverse-steel-reign-of-the-supermen/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 17:03:00 +0000 Sean Fallon a919ffb0-9f28-4f06-ad40-f56d3f7daaf1 b8017ffb601a4fc895c9b5a832ae0daaxl.jpg

First unveiled back in March, McFarlane Toys has opened up pre-orders for a DC Multiverse figure of Steel as he appeared in the '90s Reign of the Supermen comic storyline (as opposed to the recent DC animated film). It depicts John Henry Irons in his high tech Superman armor complete with his giant hammer. Pre-orders are available here at Entertainment Earth and should be available here on Amazon soon.

"A former weapons engineer, John Henry Irons moved to Metropolis to start a new life. There, on one fateful day, Superman saved his life. Forever grateful, John Henry paid it forward when the city's protector died. He took up the fight to protect the innocent in Superman's name, wearing his iconic "S" shield in tribute. Irons used his scientific genius to construct a suit of armor that allowed him to fly and gave him superior strength. He also created a giant metal hammer in homage to his namesake, the African-American folk hero John Henry. Now a permanent member of Superman's extended family, Steel is living proof that everyone has it in them to become a Superman!"

The set also includes an environmental base, art backdrop, standard display bases, and art cards.

With the ability to adopt the appearance of anyone or anything, CLAYFACE(TM) has become one of BATMAN'S most powerful enemies. BATWOMAN: Real Name: KATE KANE Trained by the military, KATE was an heiress inspired to fight crime by the DARK KNIGHT'S example after he rescued her from a mugger. But KATE'S story is unique. One of the few openly gay superheroes, she struggles for respect in her personal life as she protects all of GOTHAM CITY'S citizens, whether they respect her or not. BATMAN Real Name: BRUCE WAYNE(TM) As a child, BRUCE WAYNE watched as his parents were brutally killed in GOTHAM CITY'S CRIME ALLEY. Traumatized by their deaths, he devoted his life to becoming the worlds greatest weapon against crime - the BATMAN(TM)! To become the ultimate vigilante, the DARK KNIGHT(TM) disciplined his mind and body to reach the pinnacle of mental and physical superiority in his relentless pursuit of Justice!"

As CLARK grew up, the radiation from EARTH'S yellow sun gave him extraordinary powers, which he kept hidden. Now fully grown, he uses his powers to protect his adopted world as SUPERMAN(TM). However, on Earth -22, he becomes infected when nanotoxins from The Joker's heart are released into Batman's bloodstream, causing the Dark Knight's perfect mind to merge with the warped psyche of the Clown Prince of Crime. He soon transforms into his final form, The Batman Who Laughs, and becomes part of an attempt to plunge the entire Multiverse into ultra-violence, chaos, and utter darkness."

DC Announces New Red Hood Miniseries https://comicbook.com/comics/news/dc-announces-new-red-hood-miniseries/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 16:46:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame cec24378-82ed-499d-84df-566b2495c93e

DC has released the solicitation for comics shipping in February 2023, and in addition to plenty of Joker fun, the Batman office is expanding with a new, six-issue limited series starring Jason Todd. Red Hood: The Hill will debut with a zero issue on February 6, spinning out of the events of "Joker War." The series will then have a full launch on February 13, with six issues planned to come from writer Shawn Martinbrough and artist Sanford Greene. Greene provided the cover art for Red Hood: The Hill #0, although Tony Akins and Moritat did the interiors for the preview.

Both of Greene's covers, as well as a variant from Tirso Cons for Red Hood: The Hill #1 were released last week along with DC's solicitations. This is the first new series headlined by the Red Hood since 2021. Prior to that, the Red Hood title (previously titled Red Hood: Outlaw, and before that, Red Hood and the Outlaws) had been running consistently for about six years.

You can see the covers and solicitation text for the first two issues below.

Wonder Woman Leak Reveals First Details on New Game https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/wonder-woman-game-leak-details/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 16:38:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 48aa3cd4-2549-4c5a-b7ff-834a917a0a69

WB Games and developer Monolith Productions announced a Wonder Woman game back on December 9, 2021. Since then, neither have said a peep about the game, and there's hardly been any rumors or leaks about it either, leaving DC fans completely in the dark on what to expect. Over the weekend, this changed following industry insider Nick Backer sharing some details on the game.

According to Baker on the Xbox Era podcast, the game boasts a visual fidelity similar to WB Games' most recent DC game, Gotham Knights, which is a game that boasts impressive graphics, but it's far from an industry leader in this regard. Bolstering this, it's claimed the game runs at 30 FPS, but the development team is targeting a 60 FPS performance mode.

Baker continues referencing mobs, mini-bosses, chests/loot droops, and customizable gear such as boots, braces, and torso equipment. And all of this gear will have stats, similarly to God of War. The Invisible Jet is also mentioned, but it's apparently only used for fast travel.

Baker then references Xbox series Crackdown, as a reference point for how the game's jumping, leaping, and fast dashing feels. Meanwhile, the Lariat (The Lasso of Truth) supposedly feels good to use and functions similarly to Spider-Man's webs in the sense you can use to wrap people up, slam them, and combo them. Baker concludes by hinting at a truth mechanic involved with the whip.

This is the extent of the report, which should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt. In the past, Baker has proven reliable on numerous occasions, but every once in a while, he is off the mark, which is just part of the business in dealing with rumors and leaks. So far, none of this information has drawn any type of comment from the aforementioned, and implicated, parties. We don't expect this to change for a handful of reasons, but if it does, we will be sure to update the story accordingly. In the meantime, we wouldn't be surprised if the game rears its head at The Game Awards next month.

Stephen Amell Sets Up GoFundMe For the Family of Arrow Crew Member Who Recently Died https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/stephen-amell-sets-up-gofundme-for-the-family-of-arrow-crew-member-who-recently-died/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 15:22:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 22d6c485-0c2d-4244-9648-3f6fa333e5a6

Stephen Amell has set up a GoFundMe account to benefit the family of David McLean, a crew member who worked on Arrow throughout the life of the show. McLean recently passed away, leaving his wife and two children behind, and Amell took to social media to remember his friend, and to encourage fans to donate money to help McLean's family. The GoFundMe page has a target goal of $50,000 CAD, and has reached about 18% of that as of this writing. Based on Amell's video, it seems McLean worked on lighting for the long-running series. There is another David McLean credited as an assistant art director on Arrow, who series co-creator Marc Guggenheim clarifies is a different person.

McLean was a member of the crew for most of Arrow's eight-season run. The series wrapped in 2020, following the events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event.

"There's no donation too small. The power of us a collective will have a lasting impact," Amell wrote. "I appreciate any consideration you can give Linnea, Isla & Mattias. We all miss Dave - he literally kept the lights on."

You can see the video below.

Hey there, I'm here with a heavy heart. On October 9th we lost our friend and Arrow Crew member, Dave McLean. Dave was with us from the jump on Arrow. He was a character. He always made me laugh. The harsh reality of Dave's passing is what he left behind. Dave's wife Linnea and their two children Isla & Mattias need our help. With their permission we've established a Go Fund Me page. https://gofund.me/8ab6a2c8 There's no donation too small. The power of us a collective will have a lasting impact. I appreciate any consideration you can give Linnea, Isla & Mattias. We all miss Dave -- he literally kept the lights on.

Posted by Stephen Amell on Saturday, November 25, 2023

"The reality of his absence, compounded by the financial strain of debts and ongoing mortgage, has left us facing an uncertain future," wrote McLean's family in a statement. "Dave was our shelter during life's adversities, but the weight of his struggles ultimately proved overwhelming. Now, as we navigate this difficult time, I find myself starting anew, grappling with the challenges of being a single parent after major surgery and attempting to provide emotional support to our children as they grieve."

Arrow launched in 2012, and ran for eight seasons on The CW. From producers Marc Guggenheim and Greg Berlanti, the series starred Amell as Oliver Queen (DC Comics's Green Arrow), and tracked his journey from being a selfish playboy shipwrecked on a deserted island to sacrificing his life to save the universe. The series also starred Katie Cassidy, Emily Bett Rickards, David Ramsey, and Paul Blackthorne. It was the series that ultimately spun off The CW's shared universe of TV shows, including The Flash, Supergirl,Black Lightning, Batwoman, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Fans of The WB's/The CW's Smallville long held a theory that Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) would, eventually, somehow end up being Lois Lane. It's something that ended up not bearing out, with Erica Durance joining the series as the iconic character first as a guest star in Season 4 before becoming a series regular in Season 5, but now series creators Miles Millar and Al Gough confirm that they did, at one point, consider having Chloe end up taking on the Lois Lane Mantle.

In episode of Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum's Smallville podcast, TalkVille, Gough and Millar confirm that they spoke about having Chloe eventually becoming Lois Lane.

"We did talk about that, that maybe she is the proto-Lois and then later on, she had to change her identity or something like that, and she becomes Lois Lane," Millar said.

"The issue, again, was we wanted to get Lois Lane, and they wouldn't give her to us," Gough added. "Then, when she came in in Season 4, there was this huge thing about 'you can have her for two episodes,' and then 'you can have her for three,' and then 'you can have her for half the season' and [WBTV head] Peter Roth, to his credit was like 'f--it, She's in the show now and she's just not leaving.'"

Gough would later go on to clarify (via KryptonSite) that the consideration that Chloe might eventually be Lois was discussed in development of the show, but even at the show's pitch, the character was Lois' cousin.

"We discussed it when we were developing the show in mid 2000, but even in the series pitch document Lois was her cousin," Gough said.

Smallville Creators Previously Revealed What They'd Change About The Series

Smallville ran for 10 seasons on first The WB and then The CW, starting in 2001 and ending in 2011 and while the show was clearly a success given its longevity, Millar and Gough do have, in retrospect, one thing that they'd change if they could do things over again: they'd take a different approach to Lana Lang, particularly the relationship with Clark.

"The Clark-Lana thing played out way too long," Gough said. "Something else had to happen there. I think that was one that got a little repetitive. My younger daughter is now, finally after Wednesday, she's going back to watch Smallville, and she's in season two. She goes, 'What's the deal with these two?' I'm like, 'It was a different time.' So, I think there are things there, if we went back, we probably would be a little more adventurous with some of those relationships and bring them to certain heads and let them play out."

"We were definitely cautious and just very conscious of the fact we wanted to get to five seasons, and we ended up at 10 seasons, but we're just like, 'OK, if we split them apart, what are we gonna do?'" Millar added. "Again, as the father of girls, I think the female characters we would do differently today. I think Lana, her agency was not there. She could have been a much stronger character, and she always felt put in positions of weakness. It's a different era, a different time. So, that's something I think we could have done and would definitely look at to do better."
